Strike ends: school bus drivers in Eastern District reach agreement with gov’t

Castle Bruce students gathered outside of building

Bus drivers from the east who were on strike have resumed services transporting school children to the Castle Bruce Secondary School and various primary schools, after reaching an agreement with the government of Dominica, ending the anxiety of not knowing how they were going to pay their bills at the end of the month.

Strike action had been taken due to what drivers felt to be the injustice of late salaries.

From a reliable and credible source, DNO has learned that an agreement was reached between drivers and the government where “payment was made to secondary school bus drivers on Tuesday, and for primary school drivers, payment will be made at the end of November 2023. ”

It was confirmed by a very happy and satisfied bus driver.  He further added, “I am now on the road transporting children to the Castle Bruce Secondary School because I got my money”.

This signals the resolution of a tense situation not only for drivers but also for parents who must have been concerned about the education of their children and principals who are responsible for their development.

Pete’s,you are one of the biggest ahole in Caricom. They still vote for him,Jacka. There was no SCHOOL BUS service before Skerrit. There was no NEP.There was no Yes We Care. There was no $300 for senior citizens 65 and over. There was no Clear Harbour. There was no FREE housing for Dominicans. How the hell you expect those people not to vote Skerrit. It seem to me everybody was born from a P and you was born from a B.With aholes like you UWP will never win an election. It is Skerrit who created jobs for the school bus drivers. So you think the 4,500 people employed in the NEP will vote against Skerrit,or the 2,700 senior citizens getting $300 monthly?

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 1 Thumb down 12

Bus drivers get things done in dca. If only other dcans would be as resolute as bus drivers, dca would be a very different place today. thinking about it, maybe the bus drivers are the key. maybe they should strike on matters of importance, for instance, if you don’t tell us about the missing passport sales, we’re gonna strike. or maybe, if you don’t solve the domlec loadshedding situation in a week, we’re gonna strike. maybe this is key to move the government to actually get some substantial work done. :-D

This is great news. However, the authorities should not have to wait on a strike to address the concerns of these dedicated bus drivers. Workers should always receive their wages on time. Hopefully, the authorities have learnt their lessons from this episode and do a better job going forward.

The bus drivers should not allow their pay to go into arrears. The moment they get overdue, they should press their concern.

I am happy that the students have resumed classes. Their education is of utmost priority. However, the wellbeing of the bus drivers and their families are also important. A man cannot even serve God on a hungry belly.

Bus drivers’ wages are among the lowest in the country. If the government is unable to pay these low income workers for services rendered, what does that say about the economy. What has happened to the many billions of dollars accumulated by the sales of the people’s birthright?

There is one point of contention with this agreement. Why the secondary school bus drivers got paid but those primary school ones were put on hold until the end of the month? Don’t both have to eat, families to feed, and bills to pay?

The do-nothing ministers and senators just gave themselves a hefty raise on their fat salaries. However, bus drivers are denied their anorexic wages.

Only people with good character keep promises. Roosevelt is a shady character, not to be trusted

This government lurches from crisis to crisis. They ignore their obligations until someone puts a gun to their heads and then they cave. Everyone knows how to get them to act.
