Chinese multinational tech company Baidu is optimistic that in the not-too-distant future, they will be able to get their self-driving vehicles in Dominica, the Caribbean region, and other parts of the world.
Despite the differences in road networks, Elaine Yu, Senior Communication Specialist in the company’s marketing department, has expressed confidence in the vehicle’s intelligence that it will be able to adapt to the different infrastructure once the decision to export to markets outside of China has been made.
“At the company, we have what we call a smart map which can train the AI driver to earn from the human driver,” she stated to Dominica’s freelance reporter Ronda Luke during a site visit of the company in Beijing China.
She went on to say that Baidu’s new generation autonomous driving map has extensive features such as automatic production, real-time fusion, and knowledge enhancement. Questions about vehicle safety were also raised, and she pointed to several reports indicating that because self-driving vehicles can theoretically react faster than human drivers and don’t drive drunk, text while driving, or get tired, they should be able to dramatically improve vehicle safety.
Throughout the dialogue, she emphasized that getting the vehicles onto other islands is only possible if the various countries’ regulations approve of them. Importantly she pointed out that before these actions were made to get their automobiles on the road, various measures had to be implemented, and the same may have to be done with each country.
Baidu (BIDU) made its name as a massive search engine provider, but it has also long invested in self-driving technology in the world’s largest car market. In 2022, the business stated its aims to develop the world’s largest totally autonomous ride-hailing service region by 2023, owing to its rapid expansion as the world’s leading robotaxi service provider, with 1.4 million orders received by Q3 2022.
Since then, the business has stated its intention to broaden the operation region for Baidu’s fully driverless robo taxis, allowing it to reach more prospective customers.
Furthermore, Baidu announced several new technological breakthroughs, including an AI big model designed for autonomous driving perception, high-definition autonomous driving maps, a closed-loop autonomous driving data system, and the successful end-to-end adaptation of AI chips for autonomous vehicles.
Baidu has already been providing fully driverless ride-hailing services (with no human drivers in the automobile) in the cities of Chongqing, Wuhan, and Beijing, with access to hundreds of square kilometres of operation area.
Chinese automakers and technology firms have been preparing to compete in the global autonomous driving industry for several years. By establishing pilot testing zones across the country and pushing local enterprises to develop the sector, the Chinese government hopes to seize the worldwide lead in autonomous driving.
According to Renub Research, China’s autonomous car market is expected to reach $98.9 billion by 2030.
Dominican’s buying the pile of dung deserve Skerro and his mind games. Self-driving vehicles are a joke. They are crashing all the time and the covering of that is intense. Just think logically, how can this ever work in Dominica, or anywhere else? It can, of course (kinda) if the vehicle is littered with cameras and sensors and a nerdy boy with a remote laptop connected to it, “drives” it. They did the same thing for the late Prof. Stephen Hawking whose last words were reputed to be a “Windows logout” chime :). See, it works, kinda :).

There are self driven motor vehicles all over America, some still in the developmental stages. I have a Mercedes Benz C63 V8 Twin Turbo top speed is 220 miles per hour, it’s equip with a semi-self driving parking system.
That is if I am looking for a paring space, once activated and I am driving past parked cares and the radar detect a space, the car takes over control and maneuvers itself into the space.
It is also equip with an emergency system, that if I am driving in the middle of nowhere and get into an accident, it will transmit an emergency signal leading paramedics to where I am.
Earlier this year in blinding rain I hydroplane on the Freeway, into the center divider, the minuet I slammed into the concrete divider, a voice cut the Radio off and asked me ” are you hurt, and require the paramedics?
There are all kinds of new technology, however, one should be guarded against Chines junk!

I don’t see the “news” in this article. All companies manufacture their products for civilian users to be sold worldwide, so how is the story that China, which manufactures most of the consumer products the world buys, not expected to sell it’s self driven vehicles to the rest of the world. This wasn’t news.
Sadly you’re mistaken. I’ve been to other companies here who also manufacture self driving vehicles and they’ve indicated that their target market is China, the other Asian countries or Europe.

Cable cars run on a simple pulley system. Autonomous vehicles run on software.
90% of our roads in Dominica are built on cliffs. 90% of those cliffs have inadequate side rails. I can bet big money that at any given point in the day, there is a driver slowing down and pulling over to allow a bus or a larger vehicle to pass.
Dominica’s road system is unique and even experienced drivers … on “their roads” have gone over a precipice.
I want to know which of the two following ideas is the most MENTALLY INSANE:
a. Promotion of self-driving vehicles on Dominica’s roads (which I doubt any self-driving artificial intelligence & software program can safely execute without burning out its servers/supercomputer systems

Ahh our few miles of roads can be mapped quickly with sensors, although landslides can render some areas unreliable. So they will start with Roseau area. Just be sure to get in early on the business side with just the electric cars, it can prove to be good business.
They have been mapped very accurately. But, the roads that are currently eroding keep failing, there are new landslides frequently and flash flooding occurs often. So you’d constantly have to be mapping and the gov isn’t ready for that.
I love technology but there’s no way I trusting a self driving car on Dominica roads.

You are right. This article is from the pen of Ronda Luke, a so called free-lance journalist, based in Dominica, who has visited China, compliments of the govt. of that country. I wish DNO would provide clarity about their sources, for the public good so we can make up our own minds about China’s achievements. This article about a self steering car in Dominica does not do this. For a start we would need secured roads (guard rails) and adequate road furniture.
