“As we approach the end of the first quarter of the 21st Century there is no doubt that Dominicans are disappointed with the present state of the economy.” Those were the words of Member of the Electoral Reform Coalition (ERC), Severin McKenzie while delivering remarks during the official launch of the Dominica Economic Revival Summit recently held at the Garraway Hotel.
The conference is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4, to Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the Jungle Bay Resort in Soufriere.
According to him, when Political Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Dr. Thomson Fontaine first announced the convening of a conference on tourism and agriculture in December last year, the members of the ERC immediately contacted him, recommending an economic forum that will cover all sectors of the Dominican economy.
“The reason was obvious. All sectors of the Dominican economy from healthcare to infrastructure are experiencing severe difficulties and we need an immediate intervention to give some guidance of trajectory of the development of the Commonwealth of Dominica,” Severin stated.
He said the ERC is pleased to be associated with the political leader of the UWP and the rest of the organizing committee of distinguished Dominicans who have come together to present The Dominica Economic Revival Summit.
Severin said the summit’s main objective is to initiate a master plan that will serve as a roadmap for Dominica’s future development.
“We in the ERC are very conscious of the fact that beyond electoral reform comes, ‘economic reform’”.
“In this regard, the ERC has embarked on a series of activities that we hope will accelerate the electoral reform process and I am pleased to inform you that the ERC has a very encouraging meeting with Her Excellency the President of the Commonwealth of Dominica on Monday 22 April 2024,” he revealed.
Severin said more details will be provided by the ERC later.
Meanwhile, as an architect, Severin said he recognizes the importance of planning, “and failure to plan is to plan [for] failure.”
He believes that now is the time for all Dominicans to come together and start the process for the economic revival of the nation.
That is right he is an architect, that is the reason he wanted the government to give him the authority to inspect every house built in Dominica. He wanted to charge a fee of hundreds of dollars for every house inspected. The government of Roosevelt Skerrit refused to let him put more dept on the citizens of Dominica. He has moved from ERC to economic reform. If he had his way he would make it more costly for a Dominicans to build a house if this architect had his way.Dominicans are not stupid.
@ Lin Clown
More garbage. Why do you think that he should not be employed in his own country. Why don’t you take a break? Someone referred to you as an embarrassmrnt. I applaud this person so much.
While I applaud the efforts of all these guys, I am afraid they are singing to the choir. They are reaching a very tiny minority of Dominicans with their message. The average voter in Dominica is poor, waiting for a handout from Skerrit. The key is to be able to reach these people and convince them that under Skerrit, despite the pittance they are getting, they are actually worse off. The need to convince them that they have nothing to lose by giving them a shot and they they will see an improvement in their lives.
All these conferences and forums that they are holding to discuss high level economics will not resonate with the average voter.
Zandoli: “The average voter in Dominica is poor, waiting for a handout from Skerrit.” This takes the cake as one of the most asinine comments you have made on DNO’s blog!
The UWP is going nowhere with Dr. Fontaine’s conferences and symposiums leadership. Has he ever visited the grassroots people in their community? His aloof style away from the majority of electors and his failure to reach them in their homes and communities is a sure recipe for rejection for the UWP at the polls.
When UWP bigwigs conspired to unceremoniously kick Mr. Lennox Linton from the leadership position of the party, I urged Mr. Linton to quit. They could not even wait for he delegates conference.Showed the gentleman no respect although he carried the party on his shoulders. When people show you who they are believe them.
Mr. Thomson believe he can run the party from a distance on zoom. I want once again to encourage Mr. Linton to remove himself from this elitist leader. Let them fall on their own sword. Go back to enjoy your normal life.
The country seriously is in need of economic and electoral reforms. But most importantly, the country is in dire need of CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM.
The constitution as it is in its present form, gives the person who occupies the office of prime minister, too much power. In fact, it easily makes an unscrupulous egomaniac into a dictator.
If everyone were to study the constitution, one would be startled at the amount of power and control it gives to the person who becomes the prime minister. Mind-boggling! I believe the framers of the constitution did not envisage such a corrupt, egotistical LIAR to ever occupy the high office of prime minisgsr.
So, at that press conference, Severin had more of what he has consistently offered to Dominicans…hot air rhetoric that says little. Ok.
@Putin
One thing is certain. He had more brains than you. You sound so empty and laughable. Most times even worse than Lin Clown!
