Lena Augustine, the mother of Sarah Lyn Augustine, is convinced that her daughter has had a breakdown and that “she is not operating as herself.”
She was reacting to news, broken by Dominica News Online, that the younger Augustine, who has admitted to killing her two children, wanted to go back to court to “tell her side of the story.”
“I am not running away from justice,” Augustine told DNO. “But no one will let me talk. I don’t want to be quiet. They have kept me quiet for too long.”
In an interview with Dominica Source, the elder Augustine said days ago she began to realize something was not right with her daughter because in conversations she began noticing some differences. “She referred to herself as a second party, as Sarah Carter, who said that she was going to see to it that Sarah Lyn Augustine, the person who did this, would be brought to justice and that the children needed justice,” she revealed.
She said she was taken by surprise when her daughter referred to herself as Sarah Carter. “We have a close relationship where we always end up telling each other how much we love each other….then she said ‘mom I know you love me, that’s one thing I am sure about’ and then in the same conversation she just switched and then she referred to herself as Sarah Carter….I was a bit shocked,” Lena Augustine said.
She went on to say that by then Sarah’s manner of speech was becoming new to her. “And of course as a mother I knew long before that…I knew something was coming up because she wasn’t sleeping, palpitating and talking real fast,” the mother stated. “I could tell the change in her tone that she has taken a rapid speed for the worst.”
“Yes, she got a breakdown and is definitely not operating as herself,” she concluded. “She hasn’t slept and when she hasn’t slept she snaps…”
When asked by Dominica Source whether she believed Sarah should be in prison as many people think, Augustine said everyone is entitled to their own opinion. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think if I were in their place I too would probably have an opinion. I do not judge anyone, I am not angry with anyone for their opinions but as a mother I know my responsibilities,” she said. “I love my daughter. She is mine when she is good, when she is bad, when she is up, when she is down. She is my precious princess. I cannot say much on people’s view.”
Sarah Lyn Augustine was charged on September 28, 2010 for the murder of her two children, five-year-old Rachael Vigilant and two-month-old Sophia Vigilant. The incident, which shocked the nation, took place at their Mahaut home in the wee hours of September 16, 2010. Augustine is alleged to have stabbed Rachel 45 times and Sophia 31 times.
Earlier this year, Director of Public Prosecution Gene Pestaina, decided to discontinue the murder case against Augustine. He said his decision was based on a psychiatrist’s report which said she was “mentally fit to plead and answer the charges against her” but also said she was “diagnosed as suffering with Postpartum Depression, a clinical illness characterized by a major depressive episode”.
He also said his decision was based on the fact that Canadian authorities agreed to provide necessary psychiatric facilities for Augustine.
