Showdown Mas Camp – A big thing in a small package!

Six-time calypso monarch, King Dice, rocking an appreciative crowd at Showdown Mas Camp

They say less is more! Big things come in small packages! Tiny Shiny! Mas Camp proved them right. If sports can be called in as an analogy, Mas Camp was a fast-paced, action-filled football match with goals being scored in all directions.

It was a late start with a band in place but no one to play for. However, that would change in no time. Soon, there would be an impressive crowd who determinedly came out to be part of the party. With a short line up of just thirteen, calypsonians had the luxury of time to own the stage beyond just the performance of one song. That gave cause for worry–initially. Such worry proved needless!

What gallantry in honouring the’ ladies first’ mantra. Lady B was the first act of the night and she did not disappoint with her two renditions, which included Pray for Them. Pick Lock’s We Want More Money, Mas Eruption’s Politricks and Trinity who apparently Cannot Get a Job were each concerned with personal economics,  which struck a chord with an empathetic crowd. Triumph was permitted to sing three songs from previous years before he eventually presented his current composition, Triumph for President. Perhaps that walk down memory lane was a bit too slow, but Triumph’s Presidential bid was happily accepted. Vigilante followed. Once he got through the elegaic Don C, he rocked the crowd, up and down, inside out, from the back to the front. By then, energies were so raised, that Daddy Miller’s presidential fascinations and pursuit of an illegal crown had the crowd so pumped up that intermission at this point was fitting.

Half time over, Wave felt compelled to Speak and his audience wilingly broke from their feting to listen appreciatively. Boople was able to restart the process of animating the crowd only to have the momentum dissipate from a Puss who seemed to have lost its Soul. Time is a funny thing. In fact, it’s anything but constant. The fact that Soul Puss was the only calypsonian of the night to not be called back for some sort of encore spoke volumes. He now has more reason than ever to be Digging Blues.

Leona may just keep rising to formidable heights with her confident vocals that enhance an already infectious song in Baby Machine. Bobb not only demonstrated that he is an Original Calypsonian but a masterful one as well.  Dice, as only Dice can, closed the curtains on a night of entertainment and fun. Mas Camp not only served a platter of calypsos  past, present and is to come,  but thrilled with a mascot, lapeau cabrit, african stilt walkers as well as savy politicians honing the art of visibly mingling with their masses.

Football matches are known for the wild passion of the fans, the intense energies from the first minute to the last and the appeal to the regular folk roaring for a good time. Mas Camp is a football lover’s dream.

the Promoters of Mas Camp should keep in mind that Kaiso Lovers are blue, red, green, gold, black and should not make Mas Camp a blue political platform! Real turn-off!

Nadine..very good job..but you forgot to add that the crowd was a bit fed-up of coming night after night to hear their king’s new song, but always somewhat left disappointed…I really don’t know why season calypsoian wait so late to put their songs together.

I am tired of Dice always coming on stage (two weeks now) sing his new song with no music accompaniment..If you notice, when he said that his new song hadn’t been ready yet..people started walking out…purely disappointed…

I am giving Dice one week to come with his new song or else my love affair with Mas Camp done!

And Soul puss needs to give both his monotonous, one-style song and that ridiculous gray shoes a rest…Period!

DICE is a good singer but NOT a good roll model for the youth especially the ones that are suppose to be looking up to him the YOUNG MEN.

His character ( smoking, the way he wears his pants with is under garment exposed, listen when he speaks). To me, a roll model should be better.

you parents should be your children’s role models. Im sure dice didnt ask to be that of your wayward children. the man is an entertainer, so dont put the responsibility of keeping your children on the straight an narrow on his shoulders.
thats not his job. Besides how he wears his pants shouldnt be your business.

I am so happy that one finally pointed out how well dressed the so called kings was. Pants down boxers showing and one wants to compare this to Sandy who is well rounded, that because king dice questioned this. I will tell you his time is due and he is afraid because this girl has potentials. Why run girl remain here and prove to dice that where there is a king there will be a queen

I suppose he dressed for the occasion. My first thought of the picture is, he is losing his pants. This is what I inform anyone who I may know who wears this type of pants.
There is one, a student, who works at the grocery store I generally shop at. He wears similar pants as many young boys; even some older ones. Guess what? He is originally from Pakistan. On one occasion I said to him, “you are losing your pants.” He made some sort of comment but he was not angry. I have seen him often enough at the store and so we talk.
If I am further permitted, a few years ago a Nigerian Priest spoke about those types of pants during his homily. He said if there was a fire, other emergency or they were running to catch a bus they would not be able to run fast, if not at all. So much for fashion. This is one type of fashion we could do without.
If they were going to a job interview and they dressed in this manner, depending on the type of job, they would not be hired. Likewise those who tattoo their face, hands and other parts of their body. It could deter them from being employed in a suitable place in addition to affecting their health.
Being a calypsonian they are not restricted to a certain mode of attire as well as not wearing tattoos. Such a mode of attire is not a beautiful sight. Yet they think it is appropriate to wear such pants.

so….what kind of pants should they wear? You sound like an authority on “pants”…This is the ENTERTAINMENT WORLD! where ARTISTS! are free to EXPRESS themselves. Allu want to see the best Calypso king we ever had stop signing calypso because allu have a propblem with how he wears his pants? really dominicans? allu starting to sound as dumb as americans these days. Next all you will want to put a dress code for calypsonians and the focus will be on how nice and neat they looking and not how the well they singing their song and expressing their social commentry to make allu dance and sing. I say let the man dress how he want.

Soulpuss sounds the same every year , it’s like he is singing the same thing over and over . Sounds like a broken record to me . It’s time the King started dressing like a man rather than a sixteen year old boy , time to pull your pants up why do we need to see your boxers ..
Yes I welcome the many thumbs down !! Good show macamp … And best of luck to all the Tents this season .

Nadine, I was present last night and I must admit that you captured every moment exactly as it occurred. I think you have perfected the art of reporting on those events – you create such a vivid picture of the events as they unfold. Fantastic.

You left out my Prime Minister in waiting Mr. Lennox Linton who was seen on the floor dancing. I hope that move will put to rest the notion that he isn’t a people’s person. Dominicans must not forget those words said by a man masquerading as a doctor,”Linton is always booway, it is clear that Linton is not the character that suits high office.” Be careful what you ask for.
