Single-vehicle collision at Dublanc claims lives of married couple

The Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force is investigating a fatal vehicular collision which claimed the lives of a married couple and left one man nursing injuries at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital.

According to Acting Inspector of Police, Fixton Henderson, the accident occurred on Friday 2nd September, 2022, when the Honda CRV registration # PI 225 which was being driven by 92 year-old Arthur Thomas “in a southerly direction along the Dublanc public road, in the Morne Espagnol area when the vehicle apparently ran off the road and collided with a cliff on the eastern side of the road.”

Henderson said the vehicle which contained two other occupants, was extensively damaged. The other occupants were 68-year-old Jean Lloyd Thomas, wife of Arthur Thomas and 72 year-old Oliver Marie, of Barbados who also resided at 12th Street Canefield. He said the occupants of the vehicle were transported to the Reginald Armour Hospital in Portsmouth.

“Arthur Thomas and his wife, Jean Lloyd Thomas, were examined and pronounced dead by a medical doctor and their bodies are being kept at a funeral home awaiting a post mortem. Oliver Marie was transported to the Dominica China Friendship Hospital in a stable condition where he is receiving medical attention.” Henderson reported.

The Police PRO extended condolences on behalf of the police force to the family and friends of the deceased Arthur and Jean Thomas and wished Oliver Marie a full recovery.

Arthur Thomas license was revoked last month, he had several near missed accident. he drove to portsmouth to pick his wife up against her wishes for him not to drive. that’s sad for a 92 year old man who wouldn’t listen recovering from covid and a mild stroke. his innocent wife didn’t deserve that. wife started to drive home when she stopped for gas he was behind the wheel and refused to move. yes I would drag his behind out my car. thats selfish and just horrible.

Condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Also praying that the survivor has a speedy and full recovery. We don’t yet know what caused the accident to occur, however some are pointing to age restrictions for drivers and tests to ensure elderly drivers are capable of carrying out the task. Do they call for young people to have age appropriate tests when they get into accidents resulting in deaths? Let’s just wait for the objective results of the investigations. It’s also the responsibility of the government to put barriers in place to reduce vehicles plunging into dangerous precipices even if it’s a young person or an elderly driver so our roads can become safer.

Drivers of all age groups in Dominica get involved in fatal accidents as a matter of fact more young people get involved in fatal accidents. So instead of focusing on the age of the driver we should be focusing on the process employed to get a driver’s license. We should be talking about vision test and educating drivers how to control vehicles in all conditions….

When a human being reaches the age of forty, his/ her health naturally starts declining.
That is sight, hearing, reflexes, coordination of eye, hand and feet, et cetera.

It follows that, in driving, age becomes a pertinent and colossal factor especially at 93 years. It must be treated with careful scrutiny.

92 years of age? Any compulsory health checks? At the very least eye test, hearing test…

Condolences to the bereaved families, but 92 years old is a bit much to be driving. I think that once past the age of 70 people should be retested to see if they are still capable of driving and not being at risk to themselves and others on the road.

Just be yourself and write in the simplest manner you can. There is no need to be scholarly in everything you write.

I can remember my first English professor telling me there is no word in the English language you can write that I will not know and much more than you can at this point.

If you want to be a good writer, just try to reach those with less intellectual capacity, those who did not go to high school.

Just write simple bro, we all, the good, the bad, and the ugly will get it.

What are you talking about? That is so disrespectful.
This is an online news page not a scholarly archive platform.
Obviously, you have a problem with discernment. There are specific sites for scholarly articles.

Are you suggesting that Dominicans are not or should not write in a scholarly manner? I agree if you decide to be anti-scholarship and put anything up in here, but if we are representing Dominica, we need to do so with the best foot forward. I believe based on what the author wrote, she/he can write, but the writing should be simpler to reach the ordinary folk, and thus avoid the possibility of being confusing.

By the way “scholarly archive” seems to be contextually incorrect, probably you meant ‘scholarly achievement.’

The definition of archive: a collection of historical documents or records providing information about a place, institution, or group of people: This is not being rude it is intended to help you to grow.

“There are specific sites for scholarly articles.” This is such a shameful statement, that I hope you are not a Dominican.

Please, highlight where I was disrespectful as you indicated so I can be helped.

        Thank you, Lin clown.

But at least leave that type of language (Francisco-dog) out of a condolence, God will bless you for doing that. At some point we have to come together and work as Dominicans, despite our different political affiliations and beliefs, to help move OUR country forward.

My condolences to family and friends.
I need to make this point here very clear.
To those who récord funeral. Stop putting your cameras in the face of the crying people give them some space. I saw a funeral out of state and I never saw the camera in the face of the people the camera man was at the back of the church. Take a page of their Book. It’s time this must stop. Have a little empathy for the family.
    I thank you

Deepest condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances of the deceased. May the good gestures and kindness they did live on in our hearts.

Driving should not be a right but a privilege. That privilege should be taken away at a particular age unless you pass a compulsory physical exam of sight, hearing, et cetera.

We are too lax when it comes to our safety. No safety gears on construction sites; no safety gears and equipment going out to sea; no observation of safety rules in the workplace and at home.

The safety of people should be the highest law.

The foods we eat; the water we consume; the roads we drive on; the houses/buildings we construct; the beaches and rivers where we bathe:- with all of these, SAFETY should never be compromised.

A very tragic death Indeed for a married couple and elderly citizens at that. May God bestow grace upon their loved ones. But given the greater susceptibility to adverse medical conditions and consequently mishaps, the older one gets, it raises the question as to the prudence of affording driving privileges to someone that age.

Condolences and prayers of comfort to the families from DA and afar. May both families, though joined in marriage, know that you all are surrounded with love and light in your time of loss. Continued prayers are needed to give us strength and know that they will continue to be with us in our hearts.
