Speculation is rife that in the coming weeks, a new political party, the sixth in Dominica, will be launched. Consisting of notable figures, including some linked to the primary opposition United Workers Party (UWP), the emerging party is reportedly undertaking groundwork to gauge public sentiment.
When asked about the potential impact of dividing votes and hindering the UWP’s chances in the next general election, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, the party’s political leader, expressed no concern, emphasizing democracy’s diversity.
“We are in a democracy and in a democracy you have multiple parties,” he stated at his party’s first press conference of the year, on January 6. “At the end of the day, it is the best party that eventually ends up winning. So I welcome the competition…we welcome everybody. It’s a big space.”
He noted that there have been several new parties formed in recent years, the most recent being the Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP) in 2019 and Team Unity Dominica (TUD) in 2022.
The economist is of the view that what is ultimately important for all opposition parties in Dominica to understand is that at some point, “we have to get our act together, we have to unite as an opposition to fight this government and to restore a good way of life for the people of Dominica.”
He further stated that he would not be opposed to forming a coalition “One which presents an alternative that the people can buy into and that alternative must reflect Dominica and every aspect of Dominican society within that coalition.”
He expressed a desire for people, upon observing this coalition, this Team Dominica, to identify individuals they can relate to—people they know, people they can engage in conversations with. This aspect holds great importance for him.
Dr. Fontaine further underscored that the focus is on building, not discouraging anyone, and stressed the importance of developing unity among the opposition. Dominica’s political spectrum currently includes the reigning Dominica Labour Party (DLP) established in 1955, the second oldest Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) founded in 1968, followed by the United Workers Party (UWP) in 1988. Additionally, the Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP) and Team Unity Dominica (TUD) were established in 2019 and 2022, respectively.

The symbol of COP-PP will be the Nuclear Family represented by a man, woman, and child.
The COP-PP will be formally launched in May 2024 after all ground work has been completed.
The COP-PP urges the general public to look out for more information, and thank everyone for grasping the opportunity to learn more about this new political movement seeking to bring new hope and development to all Dominicans at home and in the diaspora.
Remember Dominica is ours to develop, and, we must give everyone the opportunity to be a part of this development thrust.

Unity is a most desirable virtue. The greatest strength of mankind rests in steadfast unity. However, for unity to be real it must stand the severest strain without breaking.
Having said those things, history is our guide and one should tread carefully before committing to form political coalitions. Most coalition governments tend to fall apart. There is usually infighting for leadership, dissatisfaction with portfolios, and irreconcilable differences in policies and strategies by individual parties.
In coming together, there must be negotiations among the various political parties to codify the most important shared goals and objectives of the group.
One thing I’m certain of, is that Starboy of Stupidity and Massive Corruption and his gang-bangers must vacate office if Dominicans are to live in comfort, peace and harmony. The man is the incarnation of Satan.
