Sixth political party may soon launch in Dominica; UWP not opposed to a coalition

Speculation is rife that in the coming weeks, a new political party, the sixth in Dominica, will be launched. Consisting of notable figures, including some linked to the primary opposition United Workers Party (UWP), the emerging party is reportedly undertaking groundwork to gauge public sentiment.

When asked about the potential impact of dividing votes and hindering the UWP’s chances in the next general election, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, the party’s political leader, expressed no concern, emphasizing democracy’s diversity.

“We are in a democracy and in a democracy you have multiple parties,” he stated at his party’s first press conference of the year, on January 6. “At the end of the day, it is the best party that eventually ends up winning. So I welcome the competition…we welcome everybody. It’s a big space.”

He noted that there have been several new parties formed in recent years, the most recent being the Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP) in 2019 and Team Unity Dominica (TUD) in 2022.

The economist is of the view that what is ultimately important for all opposition parties in Dominica to understand is that at some point, “we have to get our act together, we have to unite as an opposition to fight this government and to restore a good way of life for the people of Dominica.”

He further stated that he would not be opposed to forming a coalition “One which presents an alternative that the people can buy into and that alternative must reflect Dominica and every aspect of Dominican society within that coalition.”

He expressed a desire for people, upon observing this coalition, this Team Dominica, to identify individuals they can relate to—people they know, people they can engage in conversations with. This aspect holds great importance for him.

Dr. Fontaine further underscored that the focus is on building, not discouraging anyone, and stressed the importance of developing unity among the opposition. Dominica’s political spectrum currently includes the reigning Dominica Labour Party (DLP) established in 1955, the second oldest Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) founded in 1968, followed by the United Workers Party (UWP) in 1988. Additionally, the Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP) and Team Unity Dominica (TUD) were established in 2019 and 2022, respectively.

Mr.DC,you are wrong the populace does not want a change. That tells me you do not live in,or follow what is happening in Dominica.Any time Skerrit call out the PEOPLE they turn out by the thousands, morning, noon or night. The main reason is what he did and is doing with money from the CBI.Go on the ground Mr,DC,you will see and you will hear.

Unity is a most desirable virtue. The greatest strength of mankind rests in steadfast unity. However, for unity to be real it must stand the severest strain without breaking.

Having said those things, history is our guide and one should tread carefully before committing to form political coalitions. Most coalition governments tend to fall apart. There is usually infighting for leadership, dissatisfaction with portfolios, and irreconcilable differences in policies and strategies by individual parties.

In coming together, there must be negotiations among the various political parties to codify the most important shared goals and objectives of the group.

One thing I’m certain of, is that Starboy of Stupidity and Massive Corruption and his gang-bangers must vacate office if Dominicans are to live in comfort, peace and harmony. The man is the incarnation of Satan.

What will they be saying and doing differently?
Is de people dat doh acting with principle
And is de same people they looking to for support

The populace wants change but the current UWP is just not the change. When you have Ronald Charles who lost in the Valley more than twice, Nicholas George who lacks energy, what do you expect ? Thomson doesn’t have the charisma and other qualities needed to captivate young people. We need new talent, not someone who will speak down to the people, Thomson lost my attention months ago, when he kept reiterating, “you don’t comprehend!” Seriously Thomson! A good politician knows the people he wants to serve. He or she must always respect the people, meet the people, make sure his message gets across, if you have to speak patois, then so be it. You must always be aware of the people you are addressing. Why do you think PM keeps winning? Then UWP claim election was stolen, the same breath, everyone that they refer to is a supporter of the PM. Get it together UWP!

    I welcome a new Party!

There is also new party in the works. Ibo France is the Party Leader and Francisco Telemakak is the Deputy Leader. Look parties. I wish I had one to go to. I would ask the DJ to play me another soca with a glass of rum and some black cake. Party, Party, don’t stop the party if it is the right party.

Another political Party again!!!!! guess it shows that the growing opposition against the tyranny and ineptitude of this mal-administration in Dominica is real and growing; there are countries in the world which are successfully ruled by coalition parties; we are small yes but that may just be the beginning of the revolution to remove this wicked government on the backs of decent and patriotic Dominicans.

I guess you missed the opening paragraph where DNO tells you that “including some linked to the primary opposition United Workers Party (UWP).” In other words, DNO is telling you that your UWPwee party is further disintegrating into bits. So this party is meme bete, meme pwell and you should be more focused on your dying party rather than on the government.

Another one?  Ebeh chu nou patay under the SOS for another 100 years. They keep making it easier for him to stay in power. Already the current opposition headed by a clueless ghost is displaying serious symptons of Skerrititist Chor-lor-lor.

Anyway I have high hopes in Dr.T’s ability to form a coalition if necessary at the appropriate time because the SOS must go and if that’s what it takes then I rolling with it.

Fontaine: ““At the end of the day, it is the best party that eventually ends up winning. So I welcome the competition…we welcome everybody. It’s a big space.”

He got that right! This is why the people keep voting Labour. Fontaine always contradicts himself. I thought he said that the UWPwee is the only party to rescue Dominica? Smfh! What a comedy, that UWPwee.

More nonsense as only two parties can win seats in Dominica DLP or UWP. The rest including the new party will not even get enough votes to be considered as spoilers. So just more koshony
