Come December 6, 2022, if the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) successfully secures all 21 seats in the general elections, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says four independent senators will be appointed to parliament.
Skerrit’s comment comes as three of the oppositions parties, including the parliamentary opposition United Workers party (UWP), the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) and the Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP) have announced that they will not be contesting the elections, due to the absence of the long-awaited electoral reform.
According to the head of the DLP, “if by their actions, we get all 21 seats, we shall gladly accept all 21 of those seats. We shall not abuse this mandate, we shall govern with respect for law and the rule of law.”
“And indeed if they give us the 21 seats, I shall move with dispatch to have the necessary laws amended to provide for the appointment of four independent senators to the parliament of Dominica,” he added.
The prime minister also made known that he would ask His Excellency the President to appoint one senator on the advice of the political entity that gets the second highest number of votes in this election, the second senator, on the advice of the private sector, the third, on the advice of the church, and the fourth senator on the advice of the trade union movement.
He opined that such a move will ensure that there will be voices of dissent and different philosophies in the parliament of Dominica.
He further noted that his government will facilitate different views and recommendations, as “we do not believe that we have all the ideas but we need constructive engagement.”
Skerrit went on to express his optimism over what he deemed as a “new purposeful and well-intentioned” parliament in the new year.

this would have sounded much more legitimate if the president said he will be appointing four independent senators. The fact that a contestant in the next election is saying he will appoint four independent senators is laughable.
The unfortunate truth is that, Skerrit will remain in power as long as he wants to. I take no pleasure in making such statement. There were those who said forcefully that there would be “no bi-election in grand bay.” And we all know how that went. The change which we want won’t come by “blogging” (which is what I’m presently doing.) our hands are able to do our things but the main hindrance in our fight for change is fear. The US President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” And fear has gripped the people of Dominica for far too long. We must get rid of fear if we want change to come about. No one will liberate us but ourselves. Skerrit is a very fearful man. He knows that if the people revolt in a strategic way against him he doesn’t stand a chance. So he is acting brave. On the other hand, the people are also fearful to make that move because of the police. So we have fear on both sides. Thus, Skerrit remains unmovable. Very Sad.
Where does Skerrit get the authority to appoint opposition senators? Matter of fact he cant even appoint DLP senators because that authority lies in the hands of the president.
It appears that Skerrit is PM and President before even assuming the office of president as intended. Matter of fact Skerrit has no power at this point because parliament has been dissolved. I cant even understand why he still has police protection because technically he is no longer PM. God help my country. NO REFORM, NO ELECTION!

“Electoral reform for this government is important; it is important for the country and we are hoping that once Sir Dennis would have submitted his report, then we can go to the Parliament to effect the necessary changes as he will recommend to the country to move forward,” Skerrit stated at that time.

Four independent senators? Independent from whom? Skerrit will recommend them to the President on behalf of the political party that gets the second highest vote, which I believe would be an “independent”, standing at the behest of Skerrit, on behalf of the private sector, on behalf of the church – which church would this be because the catholic one proscribes their clergy from taking part in government- and the trade unions. All these bodies depend on the largesse of government, i.e. Skerrit, for their favours so how on earth can they be independent and even challenge any of his proposals. Should his win be upheld, expect legislation to be passed to enable him to become executive President without delay in order to escape prosecution. This whole scenario is a farcical nightmare and Skerrit will find that his victory turns out to be a Fata Morgana.
In seeking to justify his slaying of Ceasar, Brutus told the Romans: “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” The time has come for every Dominican who loves this island to demonstrate to the prime minister, not that they love his less, but they love Dominica more. Every patriotic Dominican should boycott this farce. The independent candidates should ask themselves why they wish to legitimise such a charade. Voters should stay away in droves. It is obvious that the PM is seeking all sorts of ways to legitimise the illegitimate. Anyone approached to be one of the so-called independent senators have a duty to decline. 1. The president: Our president is supposed to be a United and an independent person to ensure our democracy remains strong. Charles Savarin was nominated by Skerrit. Is Charles Savarin anywhere close to being independent?
2. The police commissioner. The commissioner is supposed to not only manage his force bu to protect and preserve our law constitution. Daniel Carbon is Skerrit’s commissioner and who will deny that he is an extension of Skerrit political arm and the main reason for the decline of our country
3, The nation station DBS radio. Cecil Joseph is Skerrit’s manager and who in their right mind will deny that DBS has been hijacked by DLP to promote the propaganda of Skerrit
4. Election Commissioner: Mr Gerard Burton was appointed by Skerrit and people look at where we are today thanks to Skerrit and Mr Byron

To the CHURCH, TRADE UNION, and PRIVATE SECTOR, please REBUKE Skerrit when you are asked to recommend or appoint senators to give legitimacy to his election.. We still live in a presumed democracy. However I am disappointed in the non-supporters of Skerrit who got nominated on November 18. The fight for Reform which I think the majority of Dominica should be in favor of, would have been much easier if only cohorts of Roosevelt Skerrit were nominated.
His walk would have been insignificant.
So while the nominated members, especially those who say they were genuinely concerned about true democracy, were free to do so, they have assisted in derailing the “No reform No Election Movement”.
