Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has told the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) that it “must remain true” to the promises made to those who elected them.
He made the comments while delivering remarks as a guest speaker at the SLP delegates conference held on Sunday.
“Politicians and their parties now have extremely short honeymoon periods,” he said. “There is tremendous pressure to perform. Voting populations are saying very clearly that political parties must not separate themselves from their people.”
Skerrit continued, “Parties must remain true to their promises, to their political base and the reasons for which they were elected.”
According to him, faithfulness to the people builds trust, “it protects the victory and secures their future.”
Furthermore, he stated that every politician has a political shelf life or expiry date.
“Let this man of long-standing caution you that if you do not put the people first, if you cannot deliver, you will quickly grow very stale and you will find those who welcomed you with cheers will just as easily send you on your way with cheers,” the Prime Minister remarked.
He said the SLP like all other political parties have a limited time to deliver on the promises made, to fulfil their mandate and to create their legacy.
“If you are putting your people first then their business becomes your business,” he stated. “When you fail to do this you will find that the people will withdraw the warm welcome they have given to you.”
And when last did the DLP under Skerritt have a delegates conference? Someone in the media in St Lucia should have asked him that question and why hasn’t it had one?. On the question of delivering to the people as the rational for staying in power why the heck does Skerritt and the DLP have to steal elections for them to remain in office? The CCJ has spoken saying that the grand theft of elections in Dominca must never again be allowed. Therefore for the DLP to resort to shenanigans to win elections means that there are many unfulfilled promises. To name a few, the Good Hope to Rosalie road, the road through Canfield bypassing the cliffs at Rockaway, the cruise ship terminal at Canfield, accounting for the $1.2 billion shortfall in the budget report to parliament and on and on. The negative scandals to include Monfared being in Dominca whilst Interpol was looking for him, establishing diplomatic relations with the pariah state Syria etc. He failed to tell the whole truth.
