Solid waste can be useful – Health Minister

Timothy said government has embraced the idea of universal health care
Solid waste is not just garbage anymore says health minister Julius Timothy

Dominicans are being urged to consider waste as something that can be useful rather than to be thrown away.

Minister for Health, Julius Timothy, made the remark as he delivered an address to observe the Dominica Solid Waste Corporation’s week of activities under the theme, “Too good to waste, reduce, reuse and recycle.”

The activities began on Monday and will come to an end on Saturday.

“Solid waste as we know it, it’s not just garbage anymore it can be reused for making new things,” Timothy said.

He continued, “This week of activities seeks to highlight education as the key strategy aimed at changing the mindset and attitudes of one of the corporation’s most important partners, to the students from kindergarten to the state college.”

According to him, apart from the service of solid waste disposal and enforcement of the litter act, the Corporation considers education a significant component in the thrust to changing minds towards maintaining a clean and green Dominica.

“Continued education within the school system on ways they can keep Dominica clean and green must be an everyday activity,” he noted.

Timothy said further that the corporation and government believe that the students must be taught at an early age about benefits of preserving Dominica.

He said all Dominicans must be taught that solid waste is not just waste but can generate employment. “One such activity for employment generation is composting and I am happy that this was one of the key activities taught and practiced at the schools,” Timothy pointed out.

“These weeks of activities is very timely as it is happening just prior to the start of our Independence celebrations and the cruise ship season, to remind us of the importance of preserving our lovely island,” he noted.

A grand school exhibition is expected to be held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday at 10am, in an effort to showcase the outcome of the works which the corporation has done on the island.

Another waste of time this guy. I still recall reaching out to him with medical supplies from the U.S and then i get to Dominica and cant get a hold of the guy and the items sitting in customs for 4 months like they doing me a favor. There are bigger issues that needs to be addressed in Dominica before they can adress recyle programs. This madness needs to end

Remember that politicians in Dominica must take credit for everything on the island. After taking credit, they are able to recycle such good intensions like your into plausible vote catching schemes.
Given the state of health care in Dominica you would think that they would jump on clearing the supplies from customs, but certainly not.

The progressive countries are way ahead. You will be amazed what could be recycled. All recycle items must be placed in a special box or bin. The government must ensure this is done. I hope you have a full list of what could be recycled.

For real the progressive countries are ahead. All items for recycling are placed in a special box or bin. Quite apart from the usual garbage. Also in some states people with back yards use some waste material and compost it. That manure is then used the following year during spring and summer for back yard gardening. A lot more can be done right here in Dominica with our garbage. The food peel, can be used, the excess leaves from vegetables and some other stuff can be used effectively for manure.

Tim, Tim is back at it. It’s amazing that we did not hear from him when the firemen in Portsmouth were under attack from rodents or when wood ants were eating away the roof of the Marigot Hospital.
Are there any developments about a start date for the new Princess Margaret Hospital? There are so many projects being announced these days, that I thought today would have been the day. Guess not.

Are they going to finally resurrect the recycling program that was initiated several years ago? It seemed to just disappear. Had it in Bath Estates for a while but no where else that I lived afterwards. That would be a project that could produce some jobs at a recycling center.

    We should begin recycling.

We rang Solid Waste to find out about recycling. Spoke to a lady and was advised that if we wanted to recycle, first we had to purchase the clear plastic bags from them at a cost of $30.00 per bundle. We then had to bring the bags to the landfill at Fond Cole.

We believe in recycling, we don’t even mind paying for the bags, but we draw the line when it comes to driving all the way to Fond Cole.

When Solid Waste are serious about recycling we will gladly come on board.
