Australia claim third Test

Players from both sides congratulate each other after the last wicket fell on Friday

Hundreds of Dominicans showed up, jumped and cheered for the West Indies at the Windsor Park Stadium as the Windies went in search of victory against Australia to level the three match Test series in Dominica.

However not even a brave effort from Captain Darren Sammy, 61, and Shane Shillingford, 30, was enough as the West Indies went down by 75 runs.

Resuming on the overnight total of 173/5 with Deonarine and keeper Baugh at the crease, the Aussies continued with skipper Michael Clarke and Nathan Lyon, secure in the knowledge that all they needed was five wickets to wrap up the series in Dominica.

After 20 minutes of play the wickets came in very controversial fashion when the Aussies appealed for a caught and bowl.

The decision was referred to the TV umpire Ian Gould of England who after many different attempts and angles ruled in favour of the Aussies to the dismay of the huge crowd at the stadium.

Sammy then came to the crease and immediately made his intentions clear as he belted balls to all parts of the field racing to 50 from 41 balls striking 3 fours and 3 massive sixes.

Carlton Baugh did not last long as he was brilliantly caught by Ricky Ponting for 12 – Roach also went for 02.

Sammy and Rampaul continued to entertain the crowd until Rampaul who had struck Clarke for a six was caught by Warner for 11, with the score then 245/9.

Local boy Shane Shillingford joined Sammy who had struck Clarke for 17 in one over, bringing the home side up to 250 from 520 balls in 330 minutes.

Shillingford and Sammy then entertained the crowd with Shillingford striking Lyon for a hat trick of fours as the home team brought the total to under 100 for victory.

After one hour and 20 minutes Clarke took the new ball but the partnership blossomed as the crowd cheered on.

However Lyon was reintroduced and after passing his highest test score of 58 Sammy on 61 attempted a sweep and was caught, giving the Aussies victory by 75 runs five minutes before lunch on the fifth and final day, leaving Shane Shillingford unbeaten on 30, his highest test score.

Bowling for Australia, Clarke took 5 wickets for 86 and Lyon 3 for 87.

Where is Sarwan, Nash and Gayle? people saying Sammy played well if that’s the case so why Pollard was not playing? because Sammy was playing in a one day style, the fact is WI need a Captain the way sammy plays and think is far from leadership skills, people must understand test cricket is a completely different format, it’s a testing game that’s why it’s called test cricket.
The WI team is lacking batters, apart from chandapaul no other batsman has proved they can play test cricket at the highest level our cricket is so poor WI captain would not make the Austalian, south afican, England or the Indian team, so stop saying well played WI…If they had played well they would have won, we had a few good performancies from SHANE,CHANDAPAUL,SAMMY and ROACH…….please bring back GAYLE,SARWAN and NASH!!!!

@paco – With regards to your call to bring back the Gayle, Sarwan, Nash and some of these so-called better players, was the West Indies winning regularly with these guys? I can recall recall on the West Indies last tour to Australia with the so-called better players, the Windies lost some of the test matches within a space of three days.

In 2010 when South Africa toured the Caribbean, the West Indies were whitewashed in the ODI’s, T20’s and test matches(once again the supposedly better players were in the West Indies team at that time).

Always remember the West Indies are not in their current low ranking because of Sammy and Gibson. These guys came and met the team where it is and are now leading a revolution to raise the team performances. Just try to remember the names of the players who were in the team during the decline of the team performance.

Very good fight to the end from Sammy and Shillingford. A pity the top order batsmen didn’t fire as they should have done. The decisions in which Braithwaite and Deonarine were given out needs to be investigated; I don’t know why the Windies cricket team always getting the bad end of some these questionable umpiring decisions.

This is a new revolution committed fighting Windies team without show ponies and money loyalists. Keep up the fight and charge for
victories guys. Wish you all a successful tour of England which starts next week. We the true fans will be backing you all 100%.

And great turnout again fellow Dominicans. We certainly pressing the claim for being the Headquarters of West Indies cricket support. Keep it up. WI All in!!

The Referral System where a team can challenge an Umpire’s decision should be ABOLISHED.It questions the integrity of the Umpire’s on the field and removes the human error element from the game.

i think you are so wrong, that actually there should be more referrals permitted.

congratulations to team west indies. At the end, our captain and “son of the soil” had indeed put up a good fight and were very entertaining. Thanks to Friday’s “crowd D/ca”, very encouraging. Though we did not win, but we were entertained.

The win was umpire-assisted. That is no win. Congratulations West Indies. You did make an effort. Next time, we want to see FEARLESS CRICKET from all the batsmen, not from Sammy only.

Stupes. We should still appreciate their efforts. Shane made us proud and Sammy proved his captaincy at the end.
