Australia’s cricketers taken aback by winding bus drive

The Frank Worrell Trophy series has taken many twists and turns for the Australian team but none as sickening as the ones that landed them in the town where the play the West Indies in the Third Test tomorrow.

So windy was the road from Dominica’s airport to the island’s only sizeable town, Roseau, that a couple of players were feeling queasy before the 90-minute trip was even half over.

Australian selectors Rod Marsh is the only member of the Australian touring party to have ever played on Dominica, as a member of the World Series Cricket Australian side beaten by the West Indies by eight wickets in a one-dayer in April 1979, but he had almost forgotten his visit here until the bus journey began.

Dear loving Dominicans , please do not blame the Aussies .They are wonderful people .I visited their country in December and I had a terrific time .I am quite certain they were not complaining at all .They are very jovial people .
The jounalist however ,sounds like an” EDUCATED FOOL”. why didn”t he change the topography of the land for the visitors ? Tell him to think before he writes .If he is a journalist surely he must have visited Dominica before .He should realise that WINDING ROADS is one of our NATURAL ATTRACTIONS . We thank GOD for even that

Did the author or did the Australians say something that is not true? You mean no one sees that as being funny? Where is the disrespect you talking about?, you all are complaining and getting angry about the wrong things people, grow up, all I see in this article is humour. My fellow Dominicans, Dominica roads with its peaks and valleys take the cake. There are lots of things I believe you get get any for, but it is certainly not that article; you are too uptight, as usual seems you want to blame everybody for all your problems; look in the mirror.

It seems the writer for that article criticizes Dominica just to make us look bad to the rest of the world. When the Aussies were in one of the caribbean island playing he made some remark saying “the aussies are complaining about the buses in St.Kitts so muchless when they get to Dominica and see the type of rugged road we have, these people are just jealous of our Natural Beauty and the greenery of our land unspoiled and emerging to the top over the other caribbean Islands……..GOD BLESS DOMINICA

The winding comments about the roads are so true and the Australian has the right to speak about their journey to Roseau. But guess what, we Dominicans never see our faults. You have the right to your option especially when it is true. We wait last minute to fix things, preparations should be done long before. That taxi driver should of pass through Portsmouth. More will be said, having international media on the island. The island is not welcoming too much paros on the streets, the place so dark no lights. Was there a live steel band at the Airport?? Did the minister of sports go to the Airport to welcome the West Indies team and the Australians?? Where are the Flags?? Has anyone checked out that bridge after leaving the airport?? Where are the Palm Trees along the bypass/highway. Where are the Street signs?? The foreigners do not know our laws. Today Sunday and the Australians are looking for open restaurants/ all closed. People’s Park need an upgrade, more benches, concrete tables and hanging lanterns.Rituals coffee house close their doors, no business.

It is true that Dominica needs to step up. The roads are too narrow. In this day and age, there is no way Dominica can prosper in the global economy with this kind of roads. If Dominica is to emerge from its current 3rd world status there needs to be wider road to support economic growth.

I am from Roseau. I once worked at Melville Hall. Though I had accommodations In Marigot, I usually made the ’round trip’ to and from Roseau 2 or 3 times a week. I hated the drive itself. The only thing that made it bearable, were the breathtaking and enjoyable stops along the way.

Now I did not actually get sick, as I am prone to
neither land nor sea sickness; but I got this woozy feeling midway through the ride. Maybe because I hated the drive so much, I became anxious to get to the end. And this was so driving both ways. It wasn’t a case of me being “scared” of the road…far from. And it only seemed to be a problem when I was being driven. When I drove I was perfectly fine.

Ironically, the slower the driver the worse I felt.

I am not offended at what was stated about the road from the Melville Hall airport. He is entitled to make a statement but it depends on how he stated it or was it blown out of proportion.
In previous years I heard that politics was involved which is the reason why the airport was built at Melville Hall.
All of us know that Dominica is a mountainous country. Therefore it was not possible to construct that airport in another location. We have to be satisfied with what we have since for the present, better cannot be done.
The drivers must drive cautiously. They must keep in mind that the drive is the first for some people who are not accustomed to this type of road. Of course, they will think, one slip and they may get into an accident and end up in a precipice. It affects those of us who are familiar with this road but since residing abroad we got accustomed to wider and straight roads and will feel uncomfortable being driven to and from the airport. Once again, what we have to do is to pray and hope for the best. :)

We have to be unique in Dominica when we pay our taxes and those responsible for cleaning out drains and sidewalks for us to riddle our way through the sidewalk vendors, they see it fit to find money to pave certain streets in Roseau because Australians coming to play cricket for 4 days, but we thats living here its not good for us,Roseau stinks.

I know dominica is not ready to host australia. Dominicans believe that when skeritt patch some holes and bring about night landing then then Dominica is up to international standard. Our hotels are not even up to standard, because most hotels have gyms and swimming pools so that sportsmen could workout if there is rain and they cannot go outdoors. Also there should be proper place for net practice and there are no nets at the windsor park so the players have to practice on uneven pitches. So Dominica is way behind the other islands and instead of listenining to constructive criticism and improve their facilities they become angry.

Is there not a song that says: “Its long and winding road?”

I cannot recall who sang that song, but he/she/they were popular singers. They were not singing about Dominica, so that should tell us that winding roads is also a way of Life.

Fortunately for Dominica’s winding road, it always leads to a place of Beauty wherever it stops; for most of the other long and winding roads–it is said that they lead to nowhere.

People let us give thanks to our God for the beautiful gift of our land named “Dominica” regardless of if her roads is like a roller coaster–most of us have fun on that one too! I know that I do and I never get squeezie stomach either–some people simply like to exaggerate Good heavens!

It appears that because you are a Dominican, you cannot say anything negative about Dominica, The writer spoke the truth. Our people are so blind to the truth. Practice cricket pitches are an integral part of any cricket tour in a country and so they must be in good order. This has nothing to do with been Dominican or not. The road gives you you that dizzy feeling and thats a fact. It has nothing to do with Aussies. Common people.

    April 22, 2012

I did not appreciate the tone of the author neither!

We can’t all be bankers nor can we all be garbage collectors. Dominica is not Australia, it is not the US nor is it Trinidad. The things the writer complains about are the exact things which make Dominica unique. Some might like it and som might not but that’s no reason to change it. Can you change who you are to please everyone? It’s virtually impossible! It is our uniqueness which makes us special! So I think the author needs to get over themselves!

it’s just an opinion. I am Dominican and EVERY TIME I land, I take gravol ok? It’s a fact the roads are small and they make some people nauseous. I laughed when I read the article. It did not seem to me it was written in a negative light. We are blessed with many things, but because of our terrain and other planning issues, we do not have the best of roads. Simple.

When you go to the big countries including Australia you are driven on very wide and fast motorways. The risk is just as or even worst than driving on these windibg roads..Dominica is still the nature island of the world and still have original features lining its beautiful shores…. Folks stop cursing what God has given you all and bless it.. The Australians are free to forfeit the match and go back home who cares…Dominica is an unspoilt Gem of the Caribbean..It has lots more to offer than some of the other countries that host test matches……Beauty Beauty Beauty….The matter for the Australians is to try and beat us..Dominica will serve as the venue tying test match in this very close series..And BTW if Australia is fielding a 2nd string team( as some of you foolish people have mentioned) and still can’t blow away a nonentity team. something wrong with the mighty Australians……If West Indies can find the killer instinct then we will return to the top half of world cricket faster than imagine. Remember also we still don’t have a full strength team….

You are correct. First impressions are lasting ones. That drive from the airport is justy dizzying to say the least.
However, with the completion of the Belles Road within a few months, the trip will be much improved. I’ve seen some videos of the work done, and thus far it looks good. Two vehicles can actually drive pass each other. The corners are much wider and this will make the ride down to Roseau more bearable.

Hope they do not use that as an excuse when West Indies beat them. They remind me of my friend Bolo`s wife always complaining like a typical Dominican. Lets not get distracted about our mission of beating them in Dominica then they will have every reason to complain.

I support the article. Recently I was in Dominica for a conference and the road from Melville Hall was so closed up with overgrown bush all along the way with goats, sheep, donkeys and cattle using the roadside as grazing pasture.I could hardly wait to reach the hotel!!!
Come on DA, you need to step up!!!

    • April 22, 2012

Here they go again who let the haters out? Bajan you have the nerves to hit on Dominica? You should be ashamed of your self after all Barbados is the home of Dont bend down” Nelson street is not for straight people to walk, the market place is as small as my mother`s kitchen, not to mention you all gutters. Come on you started it so take that. We are known as the nature Isle not the rock, and round about country like Barbados the last I checked Barbados was 189sq miles has it grown over the years guess not. I love Barbados cause I was trained as a cop in Barbados but up till now I was smart enough to recognized that all Countries has its good and bad side but once you choose to jump into bashing Dominica take what you get. Baj where is the rice and peas? BOYYYYYYYY! tell my girlfriend living in the Pine area the reason I have`nt come back is because of Nelson street. Talk about integration that is integration?.

@ Bajan your comments are so true and the Australian sees the same thing. But guess what, we Dominicans never see our faults. You have the right to your option especially when it is true. We wait last minute to fix things, preparations should be done long before. That taxi driver should of pass through Portsmouth. More will be said, having international media on the island. The island is not welcoming all that paros, the place so dark no lights. Was there a live steel band at the Airport?? Has anyone checked out that bridge after leaving the airport?? Where are the Palm Trees along the bypass/highway. Today Sunday and the Australians are looking for open restaurants/ all opened. People’s Park need an upgrade, more benches, concrete tables and hanging lanterns.Rituals coffee house close their doors, no business.

Yeah so, lets be negative and neive instead of being positive and progressive.

Hey Mr. conference man!!! ;-) ;-)

That’s what makes DA the nature island!!! Lots of bush, trees, mountains and yes WINDING ROADS because of our incredible mountains!!!

I know right. Just like all the bad roads B/dos has. You know, the roads where you have to drive through those cane fields. Or the little ones you have to sqeeze through and go into the bush to let another car pass when you trying to get the house. Kinda like that I’m sure.

Please do not even start to compare Dominica with your mini whanna-be England. You can fit Barbados in my hand bag.Yes we have winding roads, yes we have overgrown bushes, but that adds to the charm, beauty and the fact that ours is the nature island. No sky-scrapers, neon lights and concrete everywhere.

I’m not offended by the article, as the writer seems ignorant of the terrain of the island, and is obviously a big city boy, but your comment leaves a bad taste, seeing as its from another Caribbean brother/sister also residing on a small (or should I say smaller) island.

    rather average review so far.

again if Dominica is serious about doing things at the Highest Level and not dropping off standards as is the norm in Dominica it would have been visionary too…

Any Major Airport development will be in the Vincinty of the Marigot towards Woodfordhill Loop.

Re visit the plans of doing the road from behind the present airport at melville hall straight into Layou…then do a Highway by reclaiming lands along the seashore from Layou into Roseau that would be a much more viable and visionary futuristic approach rather then being dull in thinking…would get you from airport to Roseau with much comfort and less bends..

If not done we cant cash in on High End Investment and get value for our Tourism Product as that would be a thumps down for Big Players in the Global Environment…

Re the practices wickets thats a point loss by the local officals things have to be at a high standard and not a vicky via sort of way..

A third world island like Dominica must embrace Protcol and High Level of Standards, to create a impression that you on top of your game…

But again its Dominica so nothing to really shout about…They must pay keen interest to the reviews both postive and negative after the event
and surely try to learn and not be blinded with being ignorant…

Building a major highway right through the middle of the island through the mountains “MAYBE” can seriously affect all of our water sources.
Banglades, India and SouthAfrica came and we did not have these comments,(maybe they were driven through the west coast. If we were flat ike Antigua and Barbados then this would not have been an issue, but we will not have the rivers, waterfalls and mountains to talk boast about.
