Bangladesh defeat Windies, take ODI series

A typically, boundary-studded 85 from Kieron Pollard and penetrative fast bowling from Kemar Roach failed to be enough for West Indies and Bangladesh won the fifth One-day International by two wickets to clinch the five-match series on Saturday here.

Pollard struck five fours and eight sixes in his 74-ball innings and Darren Bravo gathered 51 from 108 balls, as the Windies, sent in to bat on a hard, easy-paced pitch, were dismissed for 217 in 48 overs at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.

Roach collected 5-56 from nine overs – his third haul of five wickets or more in an ODI – but Bangladesh’s batsmen gradually chipped away at the target to clinch their first ODI series victory over West Indies on home soil before a crowd of 24,034, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The victory was formalised with 36 balls remaining, when a delivery from Andre Russell was slashed to third man for four Nasir Hossain.

Confusion had reigned, when a delivery from Russell had been driven over cover by Nasir for what would have been the winning run, but Elias Sunny failed to run to the other end to complete the run, thinking the ball would runaway to the boundary for four.

Veerasammy Permaul returned the ball from deep cover and Kieran Powell broke the stumps at the bowler’s end, as Windies captain Darren Sammy and other players protested that the run had not been completed, forcing umpires Enamul Haque of Bangladesh and Ranmore Martinesz of Sri Lanka to consult with the TV Replay umpire to confirm.

The result meant that the Caribbean side lost the series 2-3, after rebounding from losses in the first two ODIs at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in the south-western city of Khulna to win the third ODI this past Wednesday by four wickets at this venue, where they also won the fourth ODI on Friday by 75 runs.

The West Indies batting again crumbled and they crashed to 17 for three in the eighth over, after Kieran Powell, Marlon Samuels and Chris Gayle all fell cheaply.

Pollard came to the crease and added some beef to the total, imposing himself with some lofty blows to put on 132 for the fourth wicket with compatriot Bravo.

He reached his 50 from just 49 balls with a straight six off Sunny and celebrated the landmark with a pull for his seventh six off the next delivery from the same bowler.

Just when it appeared that he and Bravo would seize control, Pollard was bowled essaying a loose drive at part-time left-arm spinner Mominul Haque in the 32nd over.

Bravo reached his 50 from 102 balls with a deuce to deep mid-wicket, but he was part of the wash, as the Windies lost their last seven wickets for 68 in just under 100 deliveries.

Roach gave West Indies a bright start to their defence, when he bowled Tamim Iqbal for eight and had Anamul Haque caught at gully for a duck.

The Windies fast bowler set Bangladesh further back, when Jahurul Islam was caught behind for 10, leaving the home team on 30 for three.

The visitors met resistance however, from Mahmudullah, whose 48 was the top score and helped earned him the Man-of-the-Match award, and Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim with 44 in the form a 91-run, fourth-wicket stand before off-spinner Sunil Narine bowled them both in the space of 21 deliveries, leaving Bangladesh 133 for five.

Any chances West Indies had evaporated, when Nasir joined Mominul Haque and they added 53 for the sixth wicket.

When Narine trapped Mominul in the 39th over, Bangladesh needed just 32 for victory, and though Roach scalped Sohag Gazi and Abdur Razzak in the closing overs, the result was never in doubt.

I don’t think there is anything shameful about a 2-0 Test series win on the sub-continent where conditions have been historically challenging for our boys. Given, its Bangladesh and not India, Pakistan or Sri Lanka. However, The Windies still had to play in front of 35,000 rabid Bangladeshi fans. I definitely agree we should have done better in the ODI’s but at least we took the end of tour T20 contest to close things out on a positive note.

That being said, we will have to work hard to raise our level of cricket to be competitive with the more established and stronger teams. Right now our inabilty to bat consistently and play spin bowling leave us very vulnerable to heavyweights like South Africa, England, Australia and Sri Lanka as well as decent teams like India and Pakistan. It is too bad we have very little time to work on our defeciencies. The Australian tour is right around the corner. Still I say “Viva Los Windies”, “Go Fellas” we behind you all the way.

@Anonymous – Whatever. Some of all you suffer from erratic roller coaster type emotions. When Windies lose, all you bawling they is the worse thing in the world. As soon as they win now, some of all you in the same breath does come out bowling how great they are…….(smh).

Anyways Windies, congrats on winning the T20 today against Bangladesh. A pretty good tour despite the ODI series loss. 2012 has been a great year for TEAM West Indies and the TRUE fans of West Indies cricket. Keep striving for better fellas.

NB: DNO, all you must also post more articles on the Windies when they win alright. Don’t only post Windies articles when they lose games. Thanks.

We played poor cricket and did not deserve to win. Cricket is a mind game and if you cannot think it through you will not win.
80% of the blame should go to Captain sammy. I thought he played a very poor shot when we really needed someone to play a responsible inning. He is a hit or miss batsman and after Pollard out he should have sent Thomas. Furthermore, his change bowling of bowling was never timely. He chaged roach when he was on fire and had taken 3 wickets nd was very hostile. Then after Narine took two wickets and should have been three if Sammy did not drop a crucial catch which went on to add 92 runs, he changed him. What for? When you have got a big score to defend you need to take wickets as they found out because at the end Bangla won with almost 6 overs remainig.
My other problem with them was too many changes. Why change a winning team? Although Smith never got going but his fielding was good and in 2 overs yesterday he took 2 wkts. Although I like Russel but the fact that he never looked threatening with ball or bat in the series there is no way I would have changed my team 24hrs after a must win game.

Well done Bangladesh! You all played better cricket than WI.Too many power hitters, who cannot play spin bowling well… Chanderpaul should have been in the middle order. West Indies did not even bat out their 50 overs? Shameful! Like Dominica and the Windwards, the West Indies have very few batsmen who can stand up and bat good quality spin bowling.
Looking forward to the tour of Australia early in 2013.

Congrats Bangladesh you played the Better Cricket.
This win is Good for cricket on a whole.

ICC should be Proud knowing that the game can soon Become widespread through aggressive marketing..

Windies still lack the Killer instinct to be World Beaters, they thought they had the ODI Series in The Bag Before it started.
