UPDATE: Emmanuel Nanthan elected WICB Vice President

Nanthan addressing the media after the election
Nanthan addressing the media after the election

Dominican Emmanuel Nanthan has been elected Vice President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

He beat his competitor Joel Garner 8-4

Jamaican, Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron, was elected President, ousting St. Lucian, Julian Hunte, who has been WICB’s boss since 2007.

The votes were held at the WICB Annual General Meeting in Barbados on Wednesday.

WICB is the governing body for professional and amateur cricket in the Caribbean.

Its vision statement reads, “To establish and sustain West Indies cricket as the sporting symbol of the West Indies, and the West Indies team as the dominant team in international cricket.”

Below is a statement released by Nanthan after the election.

“I wish to first express my heartfelt thanks to out-going WICB President Dr. Julian Hunte for the tremendous job he did over the last six years, working to rebuild West Indies cricket.

He is my friend and has been for a number of years. He is to me a hero, coming from the Windward Islands, and I am proud of the way he presided over the WICB during a difficult time and now the baton has been passed on.

Special thanks must be extended to Dr. Hunte’s wife, his family and the people of St. Lucia for the support they have provided to him, which enabled the WICB to turn the corner and move things along.

I am fortunate to be part of the new team chosen to advance the development of West Indies cricket. In accepting the baton, what I believe we are offering are two fresh pairs of legs to continue the work, so that one day we too, can pass on the baton to someone else to take the game that we all love and cherish further forward in this region.

We want to thank the members of the WICB for the confidence they have reposed in us and we also thank the directors with whom we have served for around a decade. They have all urged us to move forward.

We have received several messages saying the election is over, but the work has just begun.

To be able to begin this work, it will be incumbent on us to reach out to every nook and cranny in the region including the private sector to rally with us. It is not about the past, nor who won and lost this election, but bringing the people of the region together, mobilisation and strengthening behind a common cause.

We know the Caribbean well and from time to time we know there will be disagreements, but we plead with the people of the region to agree to disagree with us when this happens so that we can move forward.

We extend our hands to everyone and make ourselves available to the people of the region, as we seek to carry what is the greatest passion of the Caribbean civilization. We are honoured and privileged to be given this opportunity.”

Mano garcon CONGRATULATIONS. This position on the WICB could not come at a better time for the region and more so for Dominica. I respect you for your passion for cricket. i look forward to good things happening especially in the area of development and sustainability of the sport. CONGRATULATIONS again my friend.

I would honestly like to know. What is the reason for all the thumbs down when this is supposed be a good moment for Dominica. We as a people are not happy when our own succeeds and that concerns me deeply. I really thought we would just forget blue and red and be happy for the gentleman.

Totally agree with you. All kinds of negativity on here whereas this is a happy moment not just for him but for D/ca. I am now wondering whether the commentators would have preferred he lost??

Personally, I think it is too early to extend congrats to Nanthan; let’s see what he does for the region in his new position. When I look at Dominica cricket; when I look at Windward Islands cricket, I do not find wnything there to be proud of Mano. But I also believe every man should have his fair chance, so let’s see if Mano can make us proud.

I thought CONGRATULATIONS comes when you win or achive something?

Why are we so negative to our own Domincans but raise up someone we do not know?

Don’t we like our Dominicans to achive in life or do it only have to be a family member for us to give CONGRATULATIONS at the news of an achivement?

DNO you should have just copy and paste your guidelines and send it to him. Why some ppl believe that DNO must publish their comments?? You make your comment, if you see it you see it, if you don’t see it, it’s not there!!! Deal with it!

Administrator of DNO, now that you have quoated your disclaimer to David Stephen, and indirectly told him that your reason for not publishing his comments is because it is in full capital letters which is against your disclaimer leaves me to wonder about your fairness to all. If you scroll down to a person that goes by the name of ‘WOW’ which is the 5th from the bottom everything he said is in capital letter and you published it. Also, look at another person that goes by the name of “Blessed” was also published although everything is in capital letter. How consistent have you been sir/madam? Are we to believe that comments are being judged based on the side a person takes especially when it is contrary to your support?

ADMIN: If it is a one liner or two liner, the system allows it but a entire “essay” in caps (as some people do) is automatically deleted by the system as ‘Spam.’

When Obama was elected as president of the USA, blacks in the USA and the World were euphoric. They had grandiosie aspirations of the lot of thee black man in the US will improve immensely. Sadly some 5 years later and blacks on a whole in the US are worse off than they were prior to that period.

There reality of the matter is that it takes much more than gaining the top spot, to instrument those significant changes that the long oppressed masses are clamouring for.

As a career politition, riding in the shadows of the Jamaican head honcho, Nathan will do his utmost to ride with the flow, he is expected to do just enougth to get re-elected but the cricket devotees of the leser antilles should not expect much more than that.

        @ Just Looking On

You are the overly negative one. It’s fools like you who are the real cripplers. Read the contribution properly before getting so emotional. What it is telling some of the people is don’t expect Nanthan to do miracles like drastically increase the numbers of small islanders on the team.

Learn to respect others opinion, its your convoluted intolerance that speaks volumes of your intellectual limitations.

Let me put away my Dominican glasses and speak as a West Indian and a lover of the game called cricket. As a Dominican I am happy for Mano but as a lover of cricket I feel bad for WI cricket. I guess before one is elected as president and or vice president of WICBC, the authorities take a look at their r’esume. As a Dominican I do not know much about the resume of the president since he is Jamaican. As a Dominican, I know a lot about Mr. Nanthan’s resume, since I played under his captaincy for PSS and then played against him many times in our domestic league. Here is what I expect to be on his r’esume. As a person he loves the game with a passion. It is just unfortunate that he was not good enough to play for DA. As an administrator of cricket here and the Windward Islands, he has failed miserably. Before he was elected president of Dominica Cricket Association (DCA), he was made the director of The Northern District Harris paint league. The league was very vibrant before he became the boos and in less than three years it died under his leadership. As president of DCA, our cricket was still vibrant in Dominica and was still being played in almost every village especially on a Sunday. Today cricket is dead in Dominica and apart from grounds like Roseau, G/bay, St Joe. Dublanc and Possie, all other grounds have become zoo under Mr. Nanthan’s leadership. As a result of the above, those of us who witnessed the performances of our senior team, under 19 team and under 16 team, were left to mourn the death of cricket in Dominica under Mr. Nanthan as all teams would just come and beat up on us. So much so that this is the first time in my lifetime I see Windward team was selected and only two Dominicans (SHANE AND SEBO) made the team.
I know he is the president of the Windward Island Cricket Board and after round 5 of the competition, we are on top of the standing, is definitely not a sign that cricket has improved in the windwards under Nanthan. It is just because the standard of windies cricket has gotton so low and we have played most of our games at home. So clearly, Mr. nanthans resume is not impressive and when one thinks of where windies cricket is now and what needs to be done to inject new life, I am not at all uptimistic about the election of the Jamaican and Nathan at the helmn. I would feel much better to have a duo of the former cricket greats and reformers Clive Huber Lloyd and Joel Ganer as president and vice. I know you all will give me thumbs down for that but that’s ok I call it as I see it.

T-20 Champs, Sammy as Capt etc…

Think the torch is handed back to the big island mindset..them JA guys gonna run the show..

The new VP never impressed me, don’t see any Professional qualities in him…look at how low Dominica’s cricket has become.

Time will tell..i think it will be a massive slide downwards under those two at the helm!

    • March 27, 2013

Shut your mouth Mid Wicket. It’s not time to say how low West Indies cricket has gone. It’s time to say congrats to Mr. Nanthan. He is not the cause of West Indies’ demise. And about Lloyd, he sided with the Guyanese Govt. against the Guyanese Cricket Board which the WICB backed all the way.

  32. As I see it
    March 27, 2013

As a Dominican, I congratulate you. As a person that played cricket against you I never knew your love for the game would have landed you so far. To the best of my knowledge you are the first Dominican to have reached that far and we all are very proud of you.
However, as a lover of west indies cricket I am very disappointed with the direction that WI cricket is heading, particularly the administrative aspect as was confirmed today when they elected Wycliff Cameron as president and Emmanuel Nanthan as vice president especially when the likes of Clive Lloyd was rejected a few months ago and then today Joel Garner was beaten 8-4 by Nanthan. Both Llyod and Garner contributed significantly to our cricket in the 80’s and with the vision and experience I know Clive Lloyd in particular has for the game especially at this time of our development, I believe we as west Indians will pay for that later. However, I congratulate you Mano and wish you good luck.

    • concern citizen
      March 27, 2013

because someone played cricket for the West Indies does not meen they have excellent mangement, leadership and marketing skils.

      • As I see it
        March 27, 2013

concern citizen, I did not just highlight his time as a player although I believe it is very important especially when Clive played and captained windies we were not a force. Clive was the one that took us to our glory days and united us as a people. It was he that said that he was not concerned about big or small islander but was looking for talent. However, I also spoke about his experience as an administrator. Lloyd served ICC as match refree for many years. Does Mano have proven management, leadership, or marketing skills? Is cricket better in Dominica now than it was before Mano was president? Is the Windwards team better now than before? I think in the Caribbean it is all about politics and in politics we don’t think of who is better able but who we like as seen in Dominica today.

    • Better Government
      March 27, 2013

Oh please!!! No body loved Cricket more than mano, in the mang or any where in DA!!.. He was never the best at it, but his heart was all cricket and any boby who knew him or know him know that.. the guy has a profound love of the game and were it not for him DA would never have seen a Westindies Cricket Match… If that is not love of the game then i doh know what is..

      March 27, 2013

West Indies cricket needs to position itself financially. And we do need men who have business mindset to help do that. Persons who know the day to day running of a company. The time has come for all our former windies indies cricketers to position themself and spend the time to develop their own country and so there is a larger pool of players to choose from. Become coaches, establish cricket schools, get donation of equipment for our young cricketers.

    • Alex Bruno
      March 27, 2013

Concern citizen echoed my views. In fact, I believe that this is the way of the future. This boy club mentality and insularity problem in Windies cricket can only be dealt with when non-traditional candidates occupy managerial positions within the organisation. I mean, former crickets can contribute – as they have, but it does not always have to be that way.

Billy Doctrove, to me, was the best Elite Cricket umpire until his recent retirement and he did not play test cricket. Nanthan is more than qualified and able to assume the position and all we need to do is give him the support and encouragement to perform at his best. Nanthan almost singlehandedly organized and operated the Harris Paints Norther Sunday Cricket for years (doing so with a kind of admirable passion and pride), he has been at the helm of Dominica cricket for quite a while, not to mention his tenure on the Windward Cricket Board. So, the obvious next step for the brother is the ultimate, West Indies senior cricket.

The presidency is next Nanthan. Go for it!
