FULL STORY: Shane Shillingford suspended from international cricket

Shane Shillingford will now have to apply for re-assessment of his action.

The International Cricket Council today confirmed that an independent test had found the bowling action of the West Indies’ off-spinner Shane Shillingford to be illegal and, as such, the player has been suspended from bowling in international cricket.

A comprehensive analysis revealed that his mean elbow extension was 17 degrees which is above the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the relevant regulations.

Shillingford can now apply for re-assessment of his action after he has modified is bowling action in accordance with clause 2.4 of the regulations for the review of bowlers reported with suspected illegal bowling actions.

The independent analysis was performed by Prof. Bruce Elliott, member of the ICC Panel of Human Movement Specialists, at the School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health, University of Western Australia (UWA), Perth on 9 December.

Shillingford was reported after the end of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka last month by on-field umpires Steve Davis of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Richard Kettleborough of the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires, along with TV umpire Asad Rauf, also from the elite panel, and fourth umpire Tyron Wijewardena.

The 27-year-old from Dominica has the right to appeal against UWA’s conclusions to the Bowling Review Group, in accordance with clause 2.3 of the regulations for the review of bowlers reported with suspected illegal bowling actions. Should he choose to appeal, he must lodge written notification with the ICC within 14 days of receiving the report.

The regulations for the review of bowlers reported with suspected illegal bowling actions can be found at:

I have played cricket as a bowler for longer than Shane is alive. Cricket is my passion. As a bowler, from the time you start your run-up to the wicket, you cannot be worrying about your actions and whether it is correct or not. It has to flow from the time you start to the time you deliver the ball.

What is on your mind is where you are going to pitch the ball and what kind of movement you are going to put on it. You are thinking about the batsman’s weakness and his strengths, and how you are going to counteract that. If you have to be worried about 15 degrees or 17 degrees, you will not be effective as a bowler. You have too many things on your mind than having to worry about the angle of your elbow.

Trust me when I tell you he is done. Shane is my cousin and nothing would make me happier to see him prosper. But at some point one has to face reality.

Season greatings to all, if i may add my humble opinion, though i;m not a cricketer but let;s face it bluntly. As one or two of the columnist has stated, he did went to the cricket academy( i stand corrected) and he was first called for suspect action by a west indian umpire ( i stand corrected again). So i think that we have to first start looking at our players technically here in dominica so that we can capture these flaws early. That’s where the local cricket board comes into to play.Dominica is being considered the newest venue for international cricket then it’s time that we start to introduce the young cricketers to international standard. We have an International umpire, I believe that we can harness the expertise right here in dominica as one of the first step in dealing with these types of issues. It’s unfortunate that it had to happen. But then who’s next. Let’s look at our younger cricketers coming up (those with the potential) and let’s start the ball rolling, we can’t wait until they have reach to that level & then tout kay pwoule kwaze

i agree with you 100% i was born in Dominica, and yes there are alot of jealous people. people here love to see you fail, that why Dominica is still so slow and way behind other Islands. all this guy needs to do it work on his issues and beleive in himself. I know the shillingfords are well known people in Dominica, and they should not hold that against him. so Dominicans stop being Jealous.

    Hi Folks!

I was not suprised when the young man was reported during the Sri Lanka series. I saw him bowl during the South Africa series in the caribbean and I felt that the action was suspect. This was my opinion that I may have share with a select few. I am aware that he was called before and must have undertaken some remedial action.

He now needs help to improve the bowling action and also needs support on the psychological side so that he maintains a strong belief in himself and his abilities. Hopefully he does not get down on himself.

I am looking forward to seeing the young man make his country proud again with his performances on the cricket field.

I do not think that there is any conspiracy to bring him down. I can also understand the frustration of some who feel that there are folks out there with worst bowling action than young Shane and they were/are allowed to bowl; I share that frustration also.

I am supporting the young man to overcome this temporary hurdle.

fix yourself up bro.. just two questions; wasn’t his action suspected before he was picked? and the wickets he took are they still genuine?

  10. Jepter
    December 21, 2010

Efforts at keeping down the young man will not work. He will make a comeback and be the best in his field.

    • Piper
      December 21, 2010

Jepter talk to any seriuos cricketer and ask them how difficult it is to change your bowling action at that age?

He can change his action, but how effective will he be? Ian Bishop came back from injury and had to change his action so as not to aggravate his back. Take a look at his record before and after his surgery/action change? It can never be the same.

I feel badly for Shane, but the blame lies in the people who did not do anything or enough to ensure he had a proper bowling action when he was a young lad. That is where you make changes to bowlers’ action, not when they are at the test level. It it too late then.

The problem is, when the kids are taking wickets at a young age, people are loathe to try to change the actions of the kids. Therefore the develop bad actions which stay with them throughout their careers, until they get called out at the top level. Not a good scenario.

I agree with your comment, we in DA behave as if this is new to us and a mystery, he was called in the past, so why pretend and behave like we did not expect this at some point! The thing is maybe no one expected him to reach the top and such did not bother with the corrective measures that was necessary then! My point is if the WICB was aware of this then, they should have said to him if such and such a delivery is causing you problems then drop it/them from your list and focus on what is legal and not going to cause you problems with the umpires!

  11. Evolved
    December 21, 2010

I am totally lost as to whether this is due to his natural physical build or structure or if this problem was developed due to bad practices. Can somebody shed some constructive light on the matter?

    • Righteous!
      December 21, 2010

Evolved, very good point, but regardless of the cause, physical, biomechanical or bad practice, as you put it, the issue needs to be addressed. Either the board needs to update and review the rule, or adapt to the change or progress in the game. 2 degrees more of extension at realese is very minimal and should not make that much of a difference in the delivery of the ball. If Shane is forced to change what comes natural to him, it will be a while before he will be able to perform like he normally does.

The WICB should conduct a throrough and complete study to determine if the 2 extra degrees is truely relavant and gives a bowler and unfair advantage, less we lose really great young bowlers because of outdated rules/biomechanics of the game.

Good opportunity for WICB to throw support behind a cricketer not from the big four.(BJTG). Shane must try to correct the action and get on with his cricket.
We in DA want to see him Against India next year if possible.

He may be better at baseball lol. But seriously, Problem with d/cans is this, they do not like taking correction- its everybody-elses fault but ours. “Oh! They don’t like us.”
Don’t listen to some of these foolish comments and do what needs to be done to improve you game and make it legal. Some people will forever remain ignorant. Listen to the wise persons around you, or find some and block all negativity.

  18. Ian supports Shane
    December 21, 2010

This doesn’t make sense. How can Botha and Muli get clearance and Shilly can’t? Is it because West Indies Board does not show enough support for its players or are we as West Indies just not respected. I am not happy about this. Hope his familly can fill him with love and support at this time. Hang in there Shilly, I am in full support of you and your comeback. Do not focus on the negativity but on ways to get enven better and prove the haters wrong. I will continue to fight for you on the cricket boards. You mean well.

it is sad. Shane came up through the system. He is not johnny come lately. Why didn’t anyone work with the young man. He was called earlier in his career. He went to the cricket academy at St. Georges in Grenada, and at this point he is still getting suspended? What is wrong with our system in the West Indies? That explains why we cannot improve.

On the other hand I wonder how fairly he has been treated in Australia. I do not trust the Austrailians and Englishmen when it comes to West Indies cricket. That is just my opinion.
