As Dominica prepares to face the Canadian team in its second round of World Cup qualifying matches, two local business men, Ken Robinson of Robinson Enterprises and Mervin Birmingham of Rubens Bakery, are offering incentives to the players in order to boost their moral and to assist and motivate them for the game.

“I have agreed to make available to the players 5,000 from Robinson’s and Mervin Birmingham 5,000 from Rubens Bakery in conjunction with the Dominica Football Association (DFA) when they win,” Robinson said on Wednesday. “It’s just a token and it would be good for them …it’s not a payment but its a motivation for all the players. We hope that another time we can move up with the offer.”

Proprietor of Ruben’s Bakery, Mervin Birmingham, said, “We at Ruben’s Bakery takes sport seriously. This is just a token and want them to do well. We really want them to just come home with this very important victory.”

Meantime, President of the Dominica Football Association (DFA), Glen Etienne hailed the move by the two businessmen as “joyous.”

“It’s a joyous day for football,” he said. “It shows that the DFA is working and we are happy for the collaborative effort which is not the first time. The DFA will also put some funds towards the victory. We are also hoping that other corporate enterprises and or individuals will come on board.”

Robinson has also decided to sponsor fruit cakes for the players.

The game will be kicked off at 7:00 pm tonight at the Windsor Park Stadium with the return leg to be played next week in Canada

It’s amazing how companies can afford to give such huge donations but don’t pay their workers well. Even after having a dedicated employee for over 20 years some employers don’t pay any gratuity. Hypocrites!! That’s what Dominicans are.

We just cannot be nice? Dominicans just cannot not air their laundry for everyone to see.

So this article is about a good thing that is being done in the country and you using the opportunity to tell your employer off?? Obviously you were not that dedicated! Don’t know who you are or who your employer is/was. We never want to take responsibility for our own doing. My questions to you are: Have you spoken to your employer about this situation?? Why, exactly do you feel you deserve extra gratuity over and above your salary? Which government worker, after 20/30 yrs gets anything more than a thank you? Which US, British, Canadian, …, company pays ANYONE, who has worked in ANY position more than a thank you after 20yrs?? I want to hear from one person who has gotten, shears in the company, or a car or house or something. My mom just retired from working for the same company since 1990, here in NY, and all she got was a cake, a card, and the right to claim her benefits she invested…

Obviously the businessman had to keep the money so he can give to 22 more deserving sportsmen. The Laws of Dominica indicate that this employee had no claim.
