In his effort of giving back to sports on the island, Dominican-born, boxing coach Crawford Williams has donated over £$1,000 worth of boxing gears to the Dominica Amateur Boxing Association (DABA).
According to one of the DABA coaches, Job Joseph, Williams, who lived in England but has moved to Dominica, has been visiting the island every year and has always contributed boxing items to the association.
“He went up to England four weeks ago and on his return, he has made a big donation to the club. Over £$1,000 pounds worth of boxing gears, gloves, shoes, pants, shirts were donated to the club,” Joseph said.
He stated also that the association has held meetings with ‘Fresh Direct,’ one of the biggest food companies in the United States, to discuss assistance.
“We had a meeting and I asked that they support Dominica and help the club in any way they can,,” he stated. “The first gesture, I said to them, is that we want to have an annual competition in their company’s name.”
Joseph said on his recent visit to New York between the 8th and 15th of February, he presented ‘Fresh Direct’ with a plaque as a form of appreciation for its support.
He pointed out that ‘Direct Fresh’ has assisted DABA with financial donations and it was used to assist 25 families affected by Tropical Storm Erika.
Meantime, Joseph said DABA will be receiving a boxing ring in May 2016 and plans are being discussed to use it to host tournaments, at least once a month.
He stated that funds raised from the tournaments will go towards assisting 25 boxers in their travel to England during the summer holidays.
Josep mentioned that the Windsor Park Sports Stadium Forecourt or a section of the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard are the two areas DABA is looking at to host the tournaments.
Whichever venue is chosen, a small fee of $5.00 will be charged to enter.
Joseph thanked all who assisted in raising funds for the ring, including Karl Nassief, Trevor Burton, Gregor Nassief and Yvor Nassief.
Joseph also thanked the Dominica Sports Division in assisting to get the ring from England to Dominica, free of charge.
I am pretty sure the gear was donated to the Top Glove Boxing Club, not to the DABA, and the donator is Mr. William Crawford. Mr. Joseph is the head coach of this club.
To my knowledge, all references to the DABA in this story are erroneous. These are the club’s own relationships, plans, ring, gym, and gear.
Glad they got new gears now so they can go from reverse to overdrive. We need a proper facility with proper rings for training also. I think our guys could really go places if they could train professionally every day. Thanks Crawford.
That’s what was missing. Gearing up to fight
