DAVA holds successful AGM

The Dominica Amateur Volleyball Association (DAVA) successfully held its Annual General Meeting on Saturday January 19th at the LIME conference room in River Estate. The meeting officially got under way at 10: 00 am with 7 out of 10 teams being represented.

After the opening prayer, a minute of silence was observed for former National setter and Lime Strikeforce player, Juliette Patrice who recently passed.

A comprehensive report of the past year’s events was presented by the interim president, Albert Loblack. It highlighted the success of the national teams which included both the senior male and female teams advancing to the second round of the FIVB world Cup Qualifying tournaments. Both teams placed first in their respective zones.

The female team also went on to capture the bronze medal at the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association finals held in Antigua in November.

They were also named the Chronicle Newspaper “Team of the Year.” The youth team placed first in the Windward Islands Interschools Competition in Grenada.

Elections were then held and the following persons were voted in to represent the affairs of volleyball on the island:

President:              Albert Loblack
Vice President:         Jason Francis
Secretary               Evetlyn Durand
Treasurer:              Roanna Joseph
Assistant Sec/          Trea Yola Toussaint
PRO:                     Kairann George
Committee members: Adella Proctor, Harvey Henry, Samantha Smith and Ray Robinson

The President was pleased that the right blend of players and non-players was achieved in the decision-making process.

The meeting closed with congratulatory messages, ideas and discussions about the way forward for Dominica volleyball. One of the major goals identified by the Association for 2013 is the need to raise sufficient funds to operate effectively and meet the expenses of the Association.

The Association is also expecting the services of a Brazilian coach who will be arriving on island during the week of January 28th.

Teams were encouraged to take advantage of his services and experience.
