DFA names squad to face Panama in FIFA World Cup qualifier

President of DFA Patrick John

The Dominica Football Association (DFA) has officially announced the senior squad that will face Panama on Friday at the Windsor Park Stadium in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

The 18 man squad features Glenson Prince-capt, Owen Oscar, Prince Austrie, Hubert Prince, Calvin Christopher, Malcolm Joseph, Jerome Thomas, Craig Reid, Josley Prince, Chad Bertrand, Rasheed Bertrand, Euclid Bertrand, Jonathan Abel, Kurlson Benjamin, Mitchel Joseph, Kelly Peters, Lester Langlais and Egbert Walsh, the lone newcomer to the squad.

Squad Captain Prince relayed high expectations of the team as they take on Panama, not dissimilar to the public expectations, and called on the Dominican public to come out and support the team like they have done previously.

“We know that the public expects a lot from us and we are waiting extremely hard to deliver. We know it’s not going to be easy. The Nicaragua game that we played showed us our shortcomings and we have been working on those. I hope that public supports us again because we know that without the support of the public we cannot do anything. So I am encouraging the public to come out and support. The players know what we have to do and we are prepared to work very hard,” Prince said.

President of the DFA Patrick John stated that he believes that the team has the tools to win, affirming that he has been satisfied by preparations thus far.

John said, “I have seen this team train and I am not usually someone who is easily satisfied. I am an ardent critic of the Dominica team and [from what I have seen], I am happy to report that I have been satisfied. I believe that this team has the grit, the mentality and the mindset to win that game.”

The game against Panama begins at 6PM this Friday.

SO DATS JUST A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOME YES JUST SOME OF THE GREAT ICONS OF DOMINICA FOOTBALL…THESE GUYES PLAYED AGAINST GREAT OPPOSITION BOTH AT THE NATIONAL AND EXTERNAL LEVEL AND DID WELL….AT A TIME WHEN REAL COMPETITIVE FOOTBALL WAS BEING PLAYED AND THE CROWDS CAME OUT IN NUMBERS. THERE WAS A TIME WHEN A MERE PRACTICE OF HARLEM SAW HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE TURNING UP AND WHEN HARLEM PLAYED D ENTIRE NEWTOWN WAS AT THE WINDSOR PARK. A HARLEM VS KENSBRO GAME WAS THE BIGGEST ITEM ON THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL AGENDA!
SADLY WHAT WE HAVE NOW IS REALLY POOR YET SOME OF US IN UTTER IGNORANCE WANT TO BELIEVE THAT THSES HUYES CAN PLAY FOOTBALL. WE SADLY I SAY NO ! HOWEVER LETS GO AND SUPPORT DOMINICA BECAUSE DEM TALK SHOW HOSTS WANT TO DIVIDE OUR PEOPLE LETS GO UNITE OUR PIPS THROUGH SPORTS !

    • October 6, 2011

Like I said earlier football in the schools need a revival and the ministry of sports need to wake up. We should also encourage a few clubs at the youth level to play together with the school teams. I remembered in my early days at Grammar School when the schoold played at the first division level. It was a great celebration when the school trounced the once considered mighty harlem 3-1 TO KNOCK OUT HARLEM from the knock out round. On another note what has happened to footbal in the Roseau Central area? Anybody dare to comment on what has caused that demise of teams like Blue Stars, Kensbro and Dame Central. Not one of the Roseau based teams is a feature in our football today except for a struggling Kensbro thanks to the spirit of Bala and Long Cuffy. For all those who are pointing fingers at PJ I guess you will blame him too but when you do, remember basketball teams like Cardinals, Killer Bees and Flames and the netball teams like Celtics, all of whom used old Windsor Park for practice blame PJ too. Your blame of PJ is nothing short of diverting blame from where it is due, the general administration of sports on the island by the powers that be, which has been nothing short of dismal. The overall administration of sports has not only affected the schools but even the clubs who have no facilities to train which they once did before. THAT IS NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, so to all the detractors, I expect you to go on hating, because YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH

    People stop it.

Alot of these players that is on the team and those not selected (from possie) are sub average players .
They only look good during the league because the standard of football in dominica has droped so low.
i watch a few games last season to include the same posie team that won the league and i could not believe this was the highest level of football in dominica.

This current team don’t even look as good as santos, terrors , mangrovers , glanvillia ,not to mention coco town and strikers of the late 90’s.
the football in dominica is just poor. i even saw an un fit shaboo under rum took them guys in possie to school last year carnival weekend.

i went to the stadium to watch the game against nicaragua and trust me dem guys don’t ready. Plus the team was playing without a strategy . they never put six passes together before loosing the ball for the entire game.

Recommendation. suspend the national team ( both male and female) from paticipating in tournaments for the next five years and use the resources to develop football from the grass root.
All fields should have lights and coaches should be send to take coaching courses , physical education degrees etc abroad.

Eliminate playing matches on fields that a almost half the size of a standard football field.
centralized all premiere games and charge a fee.
the earning should be reinvested in football.
    refrees need training too.

Need to remain in contact with all who on sports schoolarship , have some one in the states conduct a fitness test at various times and if the individuals failed the test the shcolarship must be suspended.

If playesr on shcolarship don’t make themselves available for natitonal selection then suspend the scholarship.

The MAIN thing that will help football is to get PJ out .

By the way thumps up for shaboo for the work he had done every saturday morning in the benjamin park with the little kids who have now been able to win portsmouth a championship.

  15. Possie
    October 6, 2011

There are alot of possie players who can be chosen to be on the national team. Mr. PJ you must take a drive to portsmouth on a friday afternoon or when there are late games in the benjamins park. Alot of the bombers players can be considered to be on the national team. If these players are chosen to be on the national team, Dominica will shine. Because these guys got what it takes. Trust me MR.PJ…..Come down to the North > you are too much in the south!

Teddy Reviere a very good player strong, fast and cant score goals, Tyron John intellegent defender, reads the game good and he does something that most defenders dont do he plays the ball out of the defense, Oris Mills this little guy have alot of raw talent, very very skillfull player one things he demonstrate he can score when he want, Overall no defenders cant stop this player when he is on form, Mickey Edwards there’s too much word to discribe this young player, he’s the master player of the midfield but one thing he should work on is his attacking play should be among the goals for his portmouth team saw him play in the last game of the season he was outstanding. This three players should be seriouly consider for the National team.

  18. MIND SET
    October 6, 2011

PJ and the rest of the DFA must stop fooling Dominicans and face reality.Although nothing in sports is set in stone it is highly unlikely that we can beat Panama who is a major force in the CONCACAF region.
Let us hope that we can keep the goals against column down to at least 5.
Our football quality is bottom draw and our poor administration is not helping the situation.
We need a revamp of the DFA with serious people who are committed to the sport.

I AGREE WITH U.. PJ NOT INTERESTED IN FOOTBALL U KNOW. .. THERE ARE TOO MANY GREAT PLAYER IN D/ca, BUT IF NOTHING IS DONE TO IMPROVE OUR FOOTBALL HERE OUR STANDARD WILL STAY THE SAME.. ANYWAY GUD LUCK TEAM…..

      • October 6, 2011

Is PJ the selector of the national team? Why are you guys blaming PJ for who is on and who is not on the team. The blame should go to the selectors and coaches not PJ. If we are talking administration then I will say too, that PJ is not the football association, he is just the president. The association is more than just one man. All I sense here is a lot of anti-PJ emotions coming into what should be a more positive discussion.

      • Arctic Brother
        October 7, 2011

From PJ past actions he has no business being President of the Football association or representing Dominica on an international level. Frankly it is a shame and embarrassment to Dominicans.
Football in Dominica needs drastic change and improvement. There are talented young individuals with potential to develop into well rounded players. However the persons at the helm (including club coaches) should either seek the necessary training to allow them to be able to help these young individuals develop. We need qualified or experienced leaders to achieve that goal. Players today need more hands on direction.
It is unfair to harshly judge the national players today since those at the helm are not qualified or able to impact development of the players. That includes training and exposing the players to quality talent by having more friendly matches with teams outside of Dominica. In addition, by not considering experienced and talented Dominican born players station overseas to be part of the national team is unpatriotic (PJ) and denies the Dominica base players the opportunity to learn and improve their game.
Panama will be a difficult task for Dominica to handle. Panama is the better team to date based on performance but stranger things has occurred and a win by Dominica would be an addition to that strangeness. Regardless the results it’s a good experience for the team and measuring stick as to where they stand. Best of luck to the Dominican National team in quest of a victory over Panama!

You could not have said it better – Our football quality is at the bottom – this is a reflection of the standard of football played at the highest level in Dominica. As for the administration, Dominica needs serious people who are interested in the development in the sport and not their pockets.

I observed that too. There are 4 Princes and 3 Bertrands on the team. Are they related.

I would like to see a little more decentralization of football in Dominica.

  20. HARLEM
    October 6, 2011

as long as we continue to recognise that newtown boyz no longer have interests in playing football for harlem under its current weakened executive/coaching/management structure then this will continue to affect national football in an adverse way.
so if our football is to go any further whether at the under 17 under 21 and senior national or interchool level( windward games) then an effort has to be made to take advantage of the tremendous talent that still exists in newtown.
I heard of the YOUNG AICONS and was told that the future of DA and newtownHarlem football lies with that group of young men who have Mad talent secound to none in Da.

so for football to return to its greatest level we have to take a deep look at newtown football get the guyes back into the scheme of things for national service what we have now is mediocre a and while we have t support them we do know rhat that team is not our strongest.

U SEE THE PROBLEM IS WE NEED COACHES TO CHOSE A TEAM NOT BY PREFERENCE BUT BY TALENT DISCPLINE & COMMITTMENT TO THE GAME.. THAT INCLUDING BETTER FACILITIES TO TRAIN & INCENTIVE TO THE PLAYERS.. WITH ALL THAT I THINK OUR STANDARD OF FOOTBALL WILL RISE IN D/CA..

So no Harlem, no football? Champs come from Posse, South East in recent years. Dublanc always strong. Stop trying to be spoon-fed and recognize that good football is now island wide and no longer just for de Town man. Plus during your dominance those rural teams were not as strong so the field was weaker with the stronger teams being Kensbro Harlem etc back in the day. “Tremendous talent” all over. Bondieu, harlem you will valay people on dno man? The way you are going on is as if harlem is the only community that can produce star quality players. That is utter rubbish if you ask me! If you look on an international level star players come from every part of the part of the world. That is not to say that some areas don’t have a higher concentration of “good” players than others. You sound silly and even stupid to go with a rant like this. Free up man! A next thing that you should remember is that regardless of management/coaching, GREAT players SHINE through and through!(i.e though adversity, injury and coaching). You just can’t keep a good man down. Skills are skills and not just one set of persons can possess football skills. Once you are gifted with proper training anybody can become a great player regardless of which community you are from. Island wide there are great coaches who train these players to be someday to be great! So stop with all this nonsense. You sound foolish!

Are you saying that football in Dominica is all about Harlem and that if Harlem has no football then Dominica doesn’t likewise. This is just pure arrogance. While I give respect to the talent from Newtown lets us not forget that we had national teams in the past doing well with players not only from Newtown but fromm all over the Island. The problem with football in Dominica is that it has failed in the school structure and the few private academies are not enough to sustain a national team. I haven’t really looked at footbal that much since the old Windsor Park but with the few games I’ve seen and When I read now the names of some of the people who are still on the national team it tells me that the youth are not living up to expectation to carry on the mantle from those before them. I remembered when I played under 16 for Grammar School in 1984 youth football was played among schools and clubs. Thats where guys like Tony Dominique (Gutter Rat), Kurt White (Rabo), Kenrick Emmanuel (Solka), Barbie Aaron Irvin Williams (bibs) Brian Hamilton and the like came from. Teams like Bath Estate and St.Jo came out of the youth league then. Where is the football structure in the schools today particularly the secondary schools? Its all lost. Thats where we have to go back to the schools working in tandem with the private academies

Look at the Portsmouth team for example the have a lot of good player and you mean to tell me that on three players from that team in the national team, see the type of football they played recently in the stadium againts South east, Teddy Reviere, Mickey Edwards, Oris Mills, Tyron John and the Young Goalie they have.
