The Sports Division has rescheduled the final for the District Sports Festival to Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth from 12 noon.
The inaugural District Sports Festival began on the weekend of April 24-25, 2010 in the village of La Plaine under the theme: “Building communities through sports.” This was a strategy for the resuscitating of sports at the community level and eight festivals were staged around the island with the villages competing in cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, netball, rounders and track at a district level.
The following eight villages emerged as winners of their districts competitions:
South – Dubique
South West – Soufriere
South East – La Plaine
East – Crayfish River/ Salybia
North East – Woodford Hill
North – Lagoon
West – St. Joseph
Central – Morne Prosper
These village teams will compete against each other at the finals on September 26 and the overall winner will be named the Best Sporting Village of the Year. This village will be awarded at the 2011 National Sports Awards Ceremony.
However, the Sports Division will give awards for the first, second and third place teams at the final.
Best wishes to the Sports Division, organizers of the District Sports Festival and all participants for a successful event this Sunday 26 Sep ’10. I encourge all residents in north to come out in large numbers to support this event especially in light of calls for us to live healthier and less stressful lives…
I believe this is a wake up call for the Parliamentary Representative, the Town Council, and, the Benjamin’s Park Sports Committee to revive the TOUT MOUN SPORTS FESTIVAL whish was usually held after the Independence celebrations.
