Dominica finishes fourth in regional women’s basketball competition

Dominica captain, Delize Paul, top-scored for her team in all five games.

Dominica finished fourth in the 11th Annual Gillian Brazier Basketball Shoot-Out Championship.

Dominica lost the third-place game, 75-34, against Lady Vipers on Sunday at the JSC Sports Complex in Antigua. St. Vincent and the Grenadines captured the title after defeating defending champions, Chase Collegia, 61-34.

The Dominicans experienced a rough start in the championship, losing their first three matches.

Dominica arrived in Antigua on Wednesday just in time to participate in the opening ceremonies and played their first game against St Vincent and the Grenadines which they lost 71-24. Team captain Delize Paul top-scored for the Dominicans with 15 points and nine rebounds.

On Thursday, USA handed the Dominicans their second straight loss, 70-36, with Paul again top-scoring for Dominica with 19 points and four rebounds.

On Friday, Dominica suffered their third straight defeat, going down against Antigua Lady Vipers, 75-34. Paul again starred for the nature isle, bagging 14 points and pulling three rebounds. Julia Bruno gave good support with 10 points and three rebounds.

During Friday’s game, Curna John sprained her ankle and was treated at hospital. But this did not deter the Dominicans for Saturday’s match against St. Lucia which they won narrowly, 48-44, after a 28-21 half-time lead, to taste their first victory of the competition.

Leading contributors for Dominica in that match were Delize Paul (22 pts, 10 rebounds, 2 assists), Julia Bruno (10 pts, 10 rebounds) and Merha Williams (8 pts, 6 steals).

Dominica’s coach Garth Joseph said the competition was a learning experience and hopefully that will encourage the ladies to work harder next time.

The team comprises:

Delize Paul (captain)
Curnia John
Sawana Fabien
Bridgetta Bedminister
Adel Francis
Lynah Bontiff
Julia Bruno
Metha Williams
Gale Joseph
Tiffany Graham
Merle John
Julianna Fagan
Garth Joseph (coach)
Bernard Mills (assistant coach)

Why are we destructive, any effort to advance and open oportunities for women in sports is positive, so the people who only high light the negatives are no good for DA. What the ladies need to do now are to organize into teams so that a womem’s basketball league can be organized. Dont give up ladies, it was tough but you knew that from the start.

Speaking to a so called Association member, most of them had no idea what was going on

    • not so

Mickey Joseph was original set to coach but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts. He still stopped by every practice. Dave Baron sent out letters to each players job/school. So, the association did know about it. They said they couldn’t finance the trip but would help in any other way.

Dave & Mickey were fully aware of what was going on. Mickey was set to coach until a schedule conflict came up & Garth agreed to help. Dave was also involved in the raising of funds & making sure the women were excused from work.

Man That team was too secretive. There are better women out there, right here in Dominica that would have make this team a better one, yet had no idea what was going on.

I can’t agree with you saying secretive as there were players from across the island. Also, practice was held daily in Goodwill. However, the team was put together late. Though they represented Dominica, this was NOT a National Team. They went as a club team.

This is just a stepping stones. It was good to know that at least Dominica was represented. All the best in the future…You can still make it to the top.

I think that should be a wake-up call for the DABA and the Ministry of Sports, to turn some attention and channel some resources into other sports besides cricket, football and netball and men’s basketball.

There was a time in the late 1980s when there was a women’s division in the DABA national league, when a team form Grand Bay, and a handful of Roseau-based teams participated. A serious programme should be introduced at the schools as a platform for developing the sport in DA. Garth, you have your work cut out for you.

Trust that readers appreciate that team Sisserou Girl-ballers was not selected from any league!! But thing is, they represented the Nature Isle and must be commended
