An 18-year-old Dominican has been selected to be the captain of the U-19 Windward Island Cricket Team in the upcoming West Indies Regional tournament which takes place in Jamaica from July 20, 2015.
Kershaski Jno. Lewis, of the Kalinago Territory, was selected following the completion of the Windward Island’s Under-19 Tournament which was held in Dominica from June 24 to July 3.
He told Dominica News Online that it is not the first time that he has been given the captaincy role in his roughly 10-year cricket career, but it does not come overnight.
“This captaincy comes with responsibility,” he said. “I think it is nothing you can get over night and I think with experience you learn more about the game and that is how you mature as a captain.”
Jno Lewis informed that he has been captain of the Dominica State College (DSC) team and the Dominica Cricket Academy during the first division.
He has successfully passed through the doors of the Salybia Primary School, the Castle Bruce Secondary School and the Dominica State College.
His career as a cricketer began when he was a student of the Salybia Primary School about ten years ago.
“They had just introduced the school’s Under-13 League and one of my teachers, Mr. (Cozier) Frederick saw me playing during sports period and just thought that I would be good and from that he pushed me to go on and I tried out for my school and then it just engulfed me from there,” he said.
When asked about his aspirations, the Bataca native said he would like to be on the West Indies Under-19 World Cup team this year and then he would like to move on to the Windward Island’s senior team.
In the meantime, he is gearing up for the tournament in Jamaica.
“I am currently training with the senior team, I am also doing some fitness work by myself and just simple touch ups before I go to the tournament,” Jno Lewis said.
Since his cricketing career began he has played in the under 13, 16 and now 19 levels and is currently a player for the Dominica senior team and this year would make it his third year as Captain in the Under-19 level. He was also selected for the St. Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League.
