Dominicans make rounders a hit in Guadeloupe

While Dominicans living in the French island of Guadeloupe have been struggling to keep cricket alive, rounders, on the other hand, seems to be doing quite well.

As a matter of fact, the game is doing so well, an all-men rounders team, aptly known as “No Stress,” has sprouted up.

Every Sunday afternoon for the past couple of weeks, Dominicans in the areas surrounding Pointe a Pitre, some coming from as far as Basseterre, gather to compete in a mini rounders tournament.

It is the brainchild of Earnis Bannis, who has been receiving some support from the Dominica Guadeloupe Association.

According to Bannis, the tournament was organized in order to bring Dominicans together to socialize, have some fun and of course, play rounders.

The ambiance at the games is exciting and relaxing with some getting the opportunity to make some extra pocket change by selling various delicacies such as souse, fruit cake, potato pudding and other snacks.

Those who love dominoes also grab the opportunity to socialize around the domino table.

But the main attraction is the teams going at each other on the rounders’ pitch.

There are six teams taking part in the competition including the all-men ‘No Stress,’ and a Christian team named ‘Gideon Strikers.’

The other teams are Travelers, Harmonites, Starlite, and Black Eagles, which is captained by a Guadeloupian, who learnt all the intricacies of rounders from her Dominican friends.

One of the remarkable things of the  tournament is that children born of Dominican parents in Guadeloupe and growing in the French culture are being integrated to the game which is not known to the French.

The Dominicans love for rounders has not escaped the notice of the Guadeloupe authorities who have invited some of the teams from the tournament to play demonstration matches at various functions in order to introduce the cultural habits of other nationalities to the French people.

It appears that rounders has taken roots in Guadeloupe, all thanks to one man who dreamt of bringing his fellow Dominicans together just to have some fun.

I liked this idea, and hope more french and dominican have an another way to communicate.
Now is more based on french side “they kill our children, take our job, while we pay taxes for them”, on the dominicans side “french don’t like us they are racist”… It’s very important that we don’t forgot where we came from, one nation, caribean, and hope better relationship in the futur. Because, now Dominicans and Guadeloupeans are more ennemies… due to drug traffic…expect for a fondamental change

I don’t have to worry about the negatives comment against my Skerrit Labour Party is EXPORTING POVERTY & LAZINESS and you stooges are upset about this. You are getting one side of the story and many of you all are unaware how many French people look at that ROUNDERS playing. The situation has gotten so out of hand now so many of our young people in Gwada start playing the game even during the week day mornings ; when they suppose to be at school or work and now the men are joining them in this.

lapitre knows what am saying there is the truth.
We have to get serious and forget the hype. It is all about our image as a people. When we gather, drink, dance, play dominoes, talk shit/gossip and make bad matters worse Worship Skerrit and don’t produce a days work. what do you expect the French to say.

Let us learn to spend our time more productively and try to do things for ourselves. The rounders groups are being manipulated by The Skerrit Group so that they will be better organized when the time soon comes to come down and vote. What is really happening there is that what appears to be ROUNDERS TEAM is actually a series of LABOUR PARTY YOUTH & ADULT GROUPS in disguise.

Great idea. Great sport and to get fellow Dominicans together, to have fun, get to know each other, to love and care for each other. This is what this sport should produce in addition to relieving stress.
Whoever initiated it whether it is in Dominica, Guadeloupe or Antigua, should ensure that a Trademark is placed on it. The originator could be debatable. However, keep in mind what occurred with the Steel Pan.
Good luck to this new sports venture in Guadeloupe. Would love someday to witness the game in Guadeloupe.

It is good to read this message. That is what it means to love one another as Jesus has loved us. People being with people doing the things of relaxation and mind discipline.

When we go home at they end of the day all, we know is the peace and joy of the Spirit; calming the strain of the physical body. We go to work on Monday and the mind, at a balance, is able to function for better production–maybe for the whole week; we look forward to another weekend of fun and Love.

This is so good; and it is even better that it is my people of Dominica who are involved, way to guys! Blessings to you all!

i am soo glad as to what is happening with the sports up here in gwada, but i agree with ulanda miclapitre, the parises should be given to who it is due, earnise, just started a feww months ago, while there are others who started it and sacrificed their time and money in it, but no it all goes out to mr earnese, we must learn to give honour to whom it is due, well done any way

OMG…..you Dominicans are so illerate and bias. What does the Labour party has to do with Dominicans coming together to have fun and keep their culture alive. Must everything in this land be political and we wonder why the country can’t go nowhere is because we Dominicans are negative..and we always bring down the positives..and when things go bad we look for someone to blame…

I sometimes wonder why is it that the praises continue to fall in the wrong hands. I was told that it was Joesphs Mic who was the first organizer of this event but Bannis did the best in organizing and mobilizing support for the game all over Guadeluope. Earnis Bannis is a God sent and must be commended for bringing Dominicans and Gudeloupeans alike together. We must continue to work with Bannis to help improve the image of Dominica in this island.

Earnis has spent thousands of his own dolllars to make things happen and more support is needed from other people to make things better. There is so much great potential in all of this. Many French people are showing interests in this sport and I want our people to teach them to play it. I think the aim is to get each community from Da living in there to have a team participate in the league.
