EXCLUSIVE: Dominica’s Luan Gabriel sets new 200m national record

Luan Gabriel

Dominica Luan Gabriel set a new national record over the 200 metres at the Falcon Games in Tobago on Saturday.

Gabriel, representing Portsmouth Amateur Athletics Club and Dominica, made her presence felt by defeating Trinidad’s top qualifier in the U-17 200m in 24.67 seconds, the new national record.

Gabriel is scheduled to run the under-17 girls 100m on Sunday where she hopes to run a sub-12 seconds and set another national record.

Most of Trinidad and Tobago’s top junior athletes are competing at the Falcon Games as they prepare for next weekend’s Carifta Games in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Please enlighten me Admin….How can it be a “national record” when it was set at “Falcon Games held in Tobago” and she is from Dominica?

I might be missing something…please shed some light..

the reason it is called a ‘National Record’ is because a Dominican or someone representing Dominica accomplished the feat(it doesnt have to be done here, the athlete has to be Dominican for it to count).
hope this helps you understand better

    • Nice !!!!
      April 17, 2011

Probably means that she has run faster than anyone on the island in that age category ..ever. Guess someone with more experience can answer that.. but I believe this is what it means. I guess where she did it does not matter..since it is the best ever so it automatically became a national record…. I hope so.

yes it was held in tobago but dont forget dominica has their own records.so therefore, irrespective of where you compete you will be checked for records at the games by the event official and also you will be checked for records by your country officials .

As long as she’s representing Dominica, the place where she set the record doesn’t matter. A national record doesn’t have to be achieved in Dominica, if that’s what you meant.

      April 17, 2011

Thats because her time is better than that set by any Dominican. It does not matter whether it is set.
sorry, i know your question was adressed to ADMIN but i figuered i could be of some assistance.

No matter where a Dominican athlete goes to compete their times, distances and heights counts as national records. If you would look at the national records of Dominica more than half of them are attained outside of Dominica trust this information has enlightened you.
