Gayle hits back at criticism from Windies coach

Gayle

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Jamaican batsman Chris Gayle has apologised for the West Indies’ limp World Cup exit yesterday, but said it is “easy” to blame the senior players.

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson used a news conference after the 10-wicket thrashing by Pakistan to criticise senior players including Gayle for failing to perform.

Coach Ottis Gibson should help the West Indies batsmen work on their foot-work when batting. Opposition bowlers find it much too easy getting West Indies batsmen out LBW. They all seem to suffer from static-feet syndrome. The rules of the game has changed and West Indies batsmen should also change their tactics and learn to bat with their bat and not their pads. I also agree that Sammy is not the right person to captain the West Indies and should not be given automatic selection on the team. I can’t believe Benn was left out of the Pakistan game while Sammy retained his place. West Indies cricket board should now go back to the drawing-board now that we have so unceremoniously been dumped out of the world cup.

It is with regret and pain that we saw the meek surrender of our team to Pakistan in the just concluded quater finals. Is this time to apportion blame? maybe not. Are there lessons to be learned? Surely.

Tellingly from coach Gibson’s statement, he speaks of malaise (meaning feeling of illness or discomfort), should we extrapolate that all may not have been well in the team? Gayle further suggest that the truth needs to be told, again raising my suspicion that all may not have been well within the team.

Additionally, Coach calls for change and blasts his senior players whilst supporting his captain. Must I further assume that the senior players by their action or inaction was not fully supportive of the captain? Is this the reason why captain Sammy always sought to be in Gayles good books? Notably he always had some praise for Gayle.

That Gayle maybe a divisive figure, may gain support from the experience of the Jamaican Twenty 20 team which despite having one of the better teams on paper performed disastrously. The assessment into what went wrong suggested that the team’s allegiance was to one player not to the captain.

Evidently, Coach Gibson believes that it is time for change if our team is to move forward. Should there be a wholesale change in our team? The argument for this is strong. Over the past ten years, the players have been the same and the results are the same or worst. Sarwan had an extensive layoff but returned with no evidence of renewed commitment, should he be put out to pasture? I say yes! Who should take his place? Marlon Samuels/ Kirk Edwards. Should Gayle be released? Yes! Who should take his place? Devon Smith/Adrian Barath/Brathwaite(from Barbados). What of Chanderpaul? Should he be released? I say no we should hold on to him as the senior stateman.

Doubtlessly, a non-performing Sammy as captain encourages mutiny in the team as well as weakening the team it negatively affects team balance and although he has been appointed to lead the team to the end of the series against India, I do not think we can keep him in that position of captain any longer. The question therefore is who should lead? Sammy despite his passion for West Indies cricket has not distinguished himself as a leader and would not have been on the team if he was not the captain! Daren Ganga has distinguished himself as a team captain, has recently been among the runs and is also committed to West Indies cricket. Dwayne Bravo on the other hand has not distinguished himself as a captain and though he is very popular, enthusiastic and able to be a member of this West Indies cricket team, his lack of leadership credentials and despite what he says, the abscence of obvious enthusiasm for west Indies cricket would argue against him being a good choice. What of the Vice Captain Brendan Nash, He does not have leadership pedigree, could not make a state team in Austrailia but is hungry for success and is a sure pick on this West Indies team. He also may not gain absolute respect from the region and players which would not be ideal. Where does this leave us? (a) bite the bullet and appoint Daren Ganga or (b)continue with Sammy but the path we choose must reflect our desire to improve, So Mr Coach Gibson, I support your view.

I agree Chris Gayle failed and did not have a good and healthy world cup but he and others should not be blamed for an early exit. We should blame no one but captain Sammy and coach Gibson. We played Bangladesh on this same venue a week ago, and after they won the toss and batted were bowled out for 58. We won the toss yesterday and Sammy was silly enough to bat first when we increased our pace attack with the inclusion of Rampaul?
On the other hand, Sammy does not have a pick on the West Indies team because there is no way he could make the team as a bowler or batsman. Making him captain has only weakened West Indies because he is just taking the place of a genuine batsman or bowler. Asa Dominican I am happy that a small islander is the captain, but as a lover of cricket and as a west indian, if we want to go foward, Sammy must be dropped.

West Indies needs to go back to the books and old tapes to learn batting and bowling techniques. When you have a slogger like Gayle just throwing his bat around with no regard for the team’s position, what do you expect? Ask Gayle to go back and watch the great West Indies players. Remind him and the sorry bunch about the patience and charisma of Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards and the great Sobers.

With regards to the bowling, West Indies cannot keep a fast bowler for more than one season these days. All of them belly start getting big after season one…then they injured…WAW.. I even see Roach belly getting big…Ask them to take a page from Michael Holding, Colling Croft or the Big Bird that they can see what physical fitness in cricket is about…

As far as I am concerned, Gayle has failed the team miserably and he is the last one who should open his mouth. He is always injured because he is out of shape. In my opinion, Gayle behaves like he is above West Indies Cricket. He has no place on that team. They should have never left potential talent like Symmonds behind to take Gayle to the world cup.

we need to groom an under 30 team; bravo, bravo, thomas, samuels, roach bishoo, russel, taylor, pollard, fedel, flecher, barath, sammy, simons, rampaul, lose with these guys for 2 yrs and pack gayle and co

ottis is right! you can bring the horse to the river but never make it drink. gayle and co. only want to play one kind of game. hit hit and well hope you dont miss. we need professionals and not individuals who want to do as they please, no matter how good they can be. simple. the man was coach for england and they were one of the best during his time there. so he must be doing something right. its just that us caribbean people in general need to be professional and take things in, be willing to learn. not think that we already know everything

ottis gibson in the first place should not be atol surprised that that this happened, west indies only qualified for the quarter finals thank God for the presence of the minor teams, so he should know that when the big guns turned up that waste indies would vanish,i am sorry but we need to do some cleaning up or we as the carribean supporters will always be discieved, if i had my way gayle, polard, sawan, sammy and shanderpaul would be given eternal leave, and let the willing youth try something

Whilst the manager/coach should take some of the responsibility for the bad performance, it is a fact that the team has been languishing in the doldrums as a result of bad performance for nearly twenty years now. Otis only came in last year. In fact Otis Gibson was part of a never ending failing West Indies Cricket team when he played for West indies. So failure must be following him.

I am so glad India beat Australia. For me, it is like West Indies winning the World Cup.

Ottis Gibson is an obvious incompetent leader of the West Indies cricket team. As the manager, he has ultimate accountability for the team’s success or failure. However, here he is covering his behind by throwing the players under the bus. Granted the players should also shoulder some blame for not performing satisfactorily but Ottis “sitting on the dock of the bay, wasting time” Gibson should stop with his cowardly approach and man-up. In the end, it is what it is, a total team “losing” effort. So let us just lick our wounds, acknowledge and try to correct our defeciencies while building on our cricketing strengths. I am still very ticked off and disappointed by our team’s showing or lack thereof but I am sure that I will recover eventually to “rally ’round the West Indies” again.
