Gregory Shillingford under fire

Shillingford

Antiguan-based cricket official, Dominican Gregory Shillingford has come under fire in connection with the third Test in the pending series between the West Indies and Australia which was originally slated for Guyana and has now been moved to Dominica.

An article in the Antigua Daily Observer suggests that Shillingford had a hand in helping shift that Test to Dominica, in his capacity as President of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association – LICA.

The paper quotes former West Indies Under-19 cricketer Zorol Barthely as saying that Shillingford “does not have the organisation’s (LICA’s) best interest at heart”.

Barthley believes Antigua should have been given first preference to host the fixture.

“I want to suggest to you that we, as Leeward Islands people are not being fully represented, are not being properly represented at the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) by our President, Mr Gregory Shillingford and I want to make a call for the immediate resignation of Mr Gregory Shillingford as president of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association because he is not serving the best interest of Leeward Islands cricket,” the Observer reports Barthley as saying.

He said Shillingford, as LICA president, sat on the executive committee where the decision was taken to move the game, and that he should have made a strong case for Antigua to get the test, the suggestion being that he appears to have backed Dominica instead.

Former Antigua and Barbuda national cricketer Barthley is not alone in calling for Shillingford’s head.

According to the Observer, former West Indies pacer, Kenneth Benjamin, added his voice to the discussion, when he too suggested that the administrator has overstayed his welcome in Antigua and should consider “taking the package.”

“The way how Gregory Shillingford won the LICA elections tells you that Leeward Islands people don’t want him and he is saying to people that I hit him hard (verbally). I haven’t started hitting him yet because he has no interest. For one, he is incompetent to lead; secondly he has no interest in Leeward Islands cricket,” Benjamin said.

“You notice who all Leeward Islands friendly matches been against for the last three years? Windward Islands. He is looking out for Windward Islands because maybe he has plans to go back home and hold some big position. He is setting himself up and he is stepping on our backs and we need to stand up as a people and stop the foolishness,” the Observer reported Bejamin saying further.

Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said at the weekend that the Test slated for April 23, has been slotted for Dominica.

Cricket officials here have had a cautious response to that announcement however, pointing out that there has been nothing official on this from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

Some sources in the Antiguan capital have said that the match will be played at the Sir Vivian Cricket Grounds, according to the Daily Observer.

Attempts by Dominica News Online to get Shillingford’s side of the story have not been successful.

I want to say again that no match should go to Guyana either cause they always rain out and even if the stadium ram pack..The GY dollar is so low..it makes it almost impossible to break even.. DA has delivered everytime they host international matches… You have to play where there is enthusiasm and that breeds crowd support.. Wait they forget that King Short Shirt sing a song Antigua is for all Antiguans…Oh!!!..Shillingford if you get anymore oppurtunites to help you homeland do so please…at least the Governement will collect Departure tax from the visitors comming in…The Taximen get work and the economy gets a boost…Antigua have 365 bitches.oops I mean beaches..Dominica have 365 clean water rivers, kubuli beer, hotwater pond, pueve and nanny bois bande..and soca rum…Loads of mango….Billy Doctrove and Roosevelt Skerritt lol lol…..I say we have it in DA…And let me quote from another Antiguan ” Who Bex Dead and Bury tommorrow morning”

So Barthley and Benjamin thinks that Antigua should get a Test match every season.. I wonder when was the last time they held a test match and the stadium was full……Well Antigua can’t get everything. If Shillingford had a hand in helping to secure Dominica great on him..He is a DOMINICAN first. Its only natural I would do the same and I know for a fact that Messers Barthley and Benjamin will too.. Jeese man…let someone else get a chance…Afterall Dominicans overwhelmingly supported the India vs West Indies test match in Huge numbers….And Dominica have far more natural resources and hospitality to offer visitors than Antigua… My question is Antigua have had the Headquarters of WICB for sometime now can they really say they looked after the other Islands in the Leewards..They have not…So they should shut da hell up and let West Indies Cricket prevail…Mr Shilling ford every Pastor Christen their children first and me no wrong you….When they kick you out you have sweet DA to come back too….And I would not resign either let them vote me out.

I have one question, isn’t the descision for a venue made by a committee and not one guy? Why is Mr. Shillingford getting heat from Antigians. His vote or say so is not the end all be all.
The fact of the matter is Windsor Park is the present and the future.

If is one thing I know, we Dominicans love our cricket. They can can all us never-see-come-see, we didn’t know stadium before…never mind that! We will rally with our cricket. Antiguans too damn fresssshhhh; so party stand and grounds looking like allu, but tv looking like us?? Sacway gass! Cohpahwayzon!

The article clearly says that Gregory ‘may have had a hand’ in the decision. Purely speculative or maybe not he had to have a hand in the matter one way or the other. it would be nice if DNO could report who the other hands in the matter belonged to and what are the two gentlemen saying about those other hands. Also why are they not complaining about the fact that the Leeward Islands are playing Guyana in Dominica instead of Antigua or St Kitts or Monsterrat or Anguilla or Guyana as is accustom to; was that Gregory’s decision to. But the reason behind the statement is clear these guys have their own personal agenda’s and may be using the assigning of the test match to Dominica as a smoke screen. On matter of Benjamins demands that Gregory should take the package as he has over stayed his welcome in Antigua is very very unfortunate; at first it sounds childish but that is not an excuse especially coming from a seasoned West Indian cricketer and a member of the OECS. tHE LEAST BENJAMIN CAN DO AT THIS TIME IS TO OFFER AN APOLOGIZE TO MR SHILLINGFORD AND THE REST OF THE PEOPLE OF THE OECS REGION FOR THIS SENSELESS AND RECKLESS STATEMENT.

ANTIGUA AFTER DECADES OF SPENDING MONEY IN YOUR COUNTRY IN SUPORT OF YOUR CRICKET AND ONE DAY INTERNATIONALS, TODAY YOU ARE ANGRY AT ONE THAT WAS RESCHEDULED.DOMINICA HAS ALSO SUPPORTED YOUR CARNIVAL BUT WHEN ITS OUR CARNIVAL IN FEBRUARY YOU FLY TO TRINIDAD. FOR ONCE PLEASE SUPPORT DOMINICA AND COME TO DOMINICA AND SPEND SOME MONEY FOR A CHANGE. WE ACCEPTED THE TWO GUYUNA FIRST CLASS GAMES WHY CANT WE ALSO HOST THE ETST THAT WAS SLATED TO GUYUNA. Good points raised. Dont want to be pessimistic, but I can see senior officials in Liat in antigua starting to frustrate fans trying to get to Dominica for the game just to prove that there may be challenges in hosting a game in Dominica. LIAT is all we have ..sad but true
Any whether we like it or not Antigians calls the shots to route flight traffic. may seem far fetch but humans is humans…. and Antiguians want that game!

Antigua is better suited for the 3rd test against the aussies in my view..

they have the capacity and logistic whereby dominica is way costly and doesnt have max caps..

i think in the end they will play the game in Antigua as Dominica doesnt have enough hotel rooms, no gym at grounds media booth tends to be hot poor scoreboard..so Antigua is a better choice….

oh !!!!!! love the distraction from the everyday politics….lets talk cricket, yeyeeyyyeyeep!!…lol

but on a serious note, lets be rational, maybe he shld go in the interest of the leeward islands, but there would still be bickering if Antigua wasn’t chosen, to eliminate all biasness, a non leeward country was the best option, and from recent attendence statistics, which country is more deserving than dominica?????

on another note, if he being a Dominican has anything to do with dominica being chosen, then so be it! its high time that dcans abroad start looking out for their country and fellow men…

additionally, we know the benifits of hosting a cricket match to any country, so i kinda understand where the Antiguans are coming from….but so be it! im certain more than half the persons coming here will be passing thru V.C Bird Intl, so a far as i can c…we all benifit…!

I think it is totally unfair for Antiguans to be calling Gregory a crook and calling for his resignation. I know the guy personally and I am sure he is one who is committed to Leeward Island cricket.Gregory is only one of many who attended that conference call. People should be complimenting the Dominica delegation for making a strong case for Dominica and not condemn Gregory for failing to get the game for Antigua. Can the naysayers prove that Gregory did throw his support behind Dominica.

“ME NAH BANG WATA FE COME HERE “: a typical statement made by antiguans to always remind themselves and others of their antiguan superiority/right . The players feedback was also considered . As a young and new host you would think that such comment would not even be considred, and that our sister OECS island would have been happy for the growth in our history in cricket. But then again with the type of thoughts and conspiracies being expressed . It is no wonder certain statements we make and are made about us live on. CARICOM. CARIGO. Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME). Haven’t the entire Caribbean citizens, especially those in the cricket-playing nations, been told that cricket has helped bring us together as one people of the Caribbean? The game is in dire straits.

Each cricketing nation in the Caribbean has a Ministry of Sports and Culture. There are local Cricket Associations throughout. There is a WICB. However, witness the incompetences, pulling apart, vexacious spirits, lack of management skills, and lack of will to improve cricket in the region.

While all those shenanigans are going on, our young, skillful, promising cricketers are being left behind. Their hopes are being dashed by egoistic individuals.

Imagine West Indies produced the best and most fearsome pace bowlers, which made us world champs for decades. Today, real good fast bowlers are rare. Our concentration should be in the development of quality, cricketers – fast bowlers, spinners, competent batsmen and all round players, armed with the history and passion of the game, so as to be competitive.

If what is happening in our lovely game of cricket is a mirror of governance in the Caribbean, God help us. But God only helps those who help themselves.

To think that is Skerritt or the Minister of Sports who lobbied for that test match to be played in Dominica is hinging on gross manipulation of the ignorance (lack of knowledge) of some people. The facts regarding that matter is stubborn to accept. The drowning man will always catch at the straw. Govt’s do have a role, but the ICC states clearly that no Govt. should try to control our cricket, or dictate where matches are to be played. Political interference by Govt. must be a no-no in cricket. See the chaos in Guyana.

You guys are missing the point. As President of LICA he SHOULD have been pushing for the Leewards to get the match. I don’t blame the people for beign upset. We would have been too. Thing is they should have never allowed him to be president of LICA because of conflict of interest. He cannot push Leewards if he has interests in Windwards. See why our constitution is not as stupid as some think it is? Leaders CANNOT have multiple attachments. If this can happen in little cricket think of things on the major political field. Well said Mouth of the South. Dominica is certainly on its way to becoming one of the more popular venues in the Caribbean for hosting international cricket. And the massive crowd responses are there to prove it. I believe that Dominica has had the largest crowd turn outs in the Caribbean for the last three years starting with the Bangladesh series in 2009, then the South Africa series in 2010 and then India in 2011. And this year again, let us all turn out in massive numbers and support West Indies cricket again.

The WICB needs to start preferential scheduling of international cricket in Caribbean countries like Dominica where people are serious about turning up to support West Indies cricket.

There was a calypso from Dominica many years ago – “ Everything is a Pull String” (can’t remember who sang it; somebody help me on that). As a proud Dominican I am happy that we are getting the Aussies into Dominica for test cricket. I remember looking at west indies playing the Aussies and I knew that with my batting and fielding skills I could have done some serious damage to Mc Grath and them fellas ( don’t grudge me let me pull my own string and blow my own trumpet – lol).

Anyway the Antiguans should not be so pissed off – in fact they should have been happy for us. There was once upon a time when all the strings were pulled in favor of the Leeward Islands so much so that Keith Atherton for example was given preferential treatment though he was a mediocre player. It was Vivian Richard, Richie Richardson and the leeward Island cricket association who insist that spin bowler Keith Atherton be given the slot on the West indies over the best leg spinner in the world at the time – our very own Javan Etienne (they cannot deny that). Thomas Kentish was also much better than Keith Atherton. I need not say that Keith Atherton was a failure. There was also Stewart Williams from the Leeward islands who was consistently pushed by Viv , Richie and the Leeward islands as the opening bats man. Stewart Williams was a colossal failure. Every body want to benefit from pull string but once the string is pulled in another direction people cry foul. Man, it’s just a vicious cycle – truth is perception fairness and justice an illusion

I am not so naïve to think that somebody palm did not get greased because a few months ago according to West Indies board Dominica was not ready for such event because of limited accommodation facilities and the added cost to the West Indies cricket organization. Since then there have been no changes and all of a sudden we are ready to receive the Aussies who by the way travel with more fans than any other cricket team in the world.

What I like is the fact that is former cricketers that are speaking out in Antigua, unlike Dominica, where a politician like the pM to break news at his party’s rally. Skeritt is not the master of all and he needs to allow others to speak. Is only people that are lacking self confidence and at the same time have no confidence in others, that feel they ALWAYS have to talk on all subjects.

These islands never cease to thrill me with their modern day tribalism. Then we talk of Caribbean unity?
Antigua had its fair numbers of test matches; D/ca has proven that it is as competent as Antigua, Barbados or any other Caribbean island to host test matches. Why has it become a name calling, and a demand of resignation, simply because Antigua did not get its way. These small minded people must learn to broaden their horizons and get out of their dark cocoons.

So is not skerritt after all, who got the match to come to Dominica; or is it that Mr. Shillingford was influenced by skerritt to plead on Dominica’s behalf? You see how politicians can make statements which can be misconstrued to damage the credibility of others.

Kenny.Did you guys realize the showing in Dominica during the India tour? Come on guys, get up and smell the coffee,Antigua is no longer a force in West Indies cricket. We in Dominica has far out class you guys in talent and our passion for the game.Whereas your stadium is always empty we have shown that we can come out in numbers to support, for the india test match in Dominica last year when all other grounds were empty the wicb made over 250 000 ec in dominica on gate receipts.Guys i believe Antigua has lost its usefulness to West Indies cricket, apart from just granting duty free concessions to the wicb, you in Antigua has nothing more to offer windies cricket.
Just take a look at your youth cricket, the under 13s and under 15s,lets compare those to Dominica’s programmes and results.
I must also add that not only can’t you guys deliver the crowds’ your facility is the only one in the region where a match had to be stopped because of poor outfield conditions on a dry sunny day,in fact playing there its like playing on the beach.
Stop the hate guys,go back Kenny and Bartley to the drawing, do your home work and just maybe you guys will catch up with Dominica.
We are a cricket loving country and we have demonstrated that on all three occassion we hosted the west indies, even when no one else wanted to host the second choice team.Yes we hosted them and gave tremendous support by coming out in our numbers.
Way to Gregory, you a wicb director so you have to look for the best interest of the board when you are at it’s meetings and not LICA’s.Antigua would not bring the crowds hence no money for the wicb coffers,so you acted in the boards best interest.Congrates bro.

So what Angtiguans think everything must be there? This is why the Caribbean is going nowhere in terms of unity. Call for what resignation? Antiguans believe that Dominica is beneath them. We have a state of the art modern stadium and great cricket field, what the hell is these people issue.

    • Observer
      February 1, 2012

Well I was in ANU for the 2 ODI’s vs India last June. The attendance was exteemely poor. Maybe Antiguans are cricket weary now, since they have had International Cricket for so long; maybe too because it is a novelty, Dominicans are flocking to the grounds in large numbers to see International Cricket. At the end of the day the Board has to look at the financial viability of placing a match in a particular location.
There is no doubt that since the introduction of International Cricket to Dominica in 2009 the support has been tremendous.
Let’s be fair and objective in our criticism. I don’t think the argument the Shillingford is Dominican and is underrmining Antiguan Cricket holds any water.
