New Delhi, India – Following an injury to his left knee West Indies Vice Captain Dwayne Bravo is expected to be out of cricket action for a minimum of four weeks and will miss the remainder of the West Indies Cricket World Cup campaign.

The right-handed all rounder sustained the injury while fielding to his own bowling in Thursday’s CWC match against South Africa at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.

He had an MRI scan on his injured left knee which revealed a sprain of his anterior cruciate ligament and tear of the knee cartilage.

Bravo will return to the Caribbean for further orthopaedic assessments and to commence rehabilitation.

The West Indies Cricket Board is in the process of applying to the ICC for a replacement player for the duration of the World Cup. The replacement player will be named once approved by the tournament’s technical committee.

West Indies Head Coach Ottis Gibson said: “This is a blow for us. Dwayne is our Vice Captain and one of the key members of our team. He has been showing good form with the bat and batted well against South Africa on Thursday. He is also a livewire in the field and a reliable bowler. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he gets back on the field soon.”

The Windies will play their second Group B World Cup match against the Netherlands on Monday at Feroz Shah Kotla. First ball is 2.30 pm (5 am Eastern Caribbean Time/4 am Jamaica Time).

I am not sure what is driving the selection process in West Indies cricket. To begin with, making Sammy the captain was a bad idea. Sammy is a good player but it appears that the pressures of the captaincy have negatively impacted his performance.

I don’t understand why they do not have confidence in the younger talented players. There is no reason for leaving Simons out of the team while the older guys like Gayle, Sarwan and Chanderpaul are played even when they are out of shape or out of form.

The biggest hurdle West Indies cricket has to overcome is in its bowling. Simply put, there are no more bowlers in the West Indies. West Indian bowling gets no respect because it is simply terrible. They cannot bowl out any side in one day or in test. You cannot win matches like that.

True say! I just cannot see the value of Sammy on the Windies team. He’s not a good enough tactician to captain on the international stage, he’s not a specialist batsman, not a specialist bowler and not a genuine all rounder. Sarwan and Chandrapaul seem to have past their ‘sell by’ date and Chris Gayle only gives one good effort in a series.
There are quite a few promising young bowlers playing in the regional tournament but the selectors seem to ignore them. Not much hope for West Indies cricket. :( :( :(

It’s very unfortunate to lose Dwayne Bravo so early in the tournament considering the West Indies had previously lost Carlton Baugh and Adrian Barath to injury also. The remaining players on the team will have to raise their level of play in order to help the Windies team progress through the World Cup stages.

I cannot believe that the WICBC didn’t have the foresight to include Marlon Samuels not even on a reserve list for the world cup once they realised that he would be available to represent the Windies again after his ICC ban. A player in the caliber of Marlon should have been the first thing on the selectors mind when selecting a team for the world cup.
Of all the teams participating in the world cup the Windies seem the team least prepared to offer a robust challenge to win it. Now that Dwane Bravo has been pulled out from the squad, only his brother (Darren) seem to be up for it. What a shambles! The selectors should hang their heads in shame. I suppose the only other option now is to recall Simmons as an extra batter, drop Devon Smith and play an extra bowler.

Samuels cannot join the team because he was not on the reserve list submitted to the ICC by the WICB
