International women’s cricket comes to Windsor Park

The fast improving Windies Women’s Team will take on third-ranked India Women’s Team in two T20 International Matches at Dominica’s Windsor Park Stadium on Ash Wednesday, February 22, and Thursday, February 23.  The matches will provide local cricket fans with the chance of experiencing international women’s cricket for the very first time.

The Windies team, led by experienced wicket-keeper and inspirational captain, Merisssa Aguilleira, will take on the India team in what is expected to be two very highly competitive matches, starting at 2:00 p.m. on both days.

The team is built around its world-rated all-rounders Stafanie Taylor, Shanel Daley and Deandra Dottin, along with Anisa Mohammed, the match winning off-spinner.
Taylor, the right handed opener and off-spinner, was named ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2011 and is currently the leading player in the game. At the age of 20,she is already the most successful female cricketer in West Indies history.

The powerful Dottin is a superb right-handed batswoman, a sharp medium pacer and one of the best fielders in the game.  She holds the world record for the fastest century in a T20 International by a male or female player. Daley, the left-handed Number 3, is a steady presence in the top order. She is also a vital bowler with her left-arm spin.

Mohammed, at age 23, is the most experienced player in the team, having made her international debut nine years ago. The team also comprises local cricketer, Pearl Etienne, a medium pacer and useful lower order batswoman.  The full West Indies squad is as follows: Merissa Aguilleira (Captain/wicket-keeper), Stafanie Taylor (Vice captain), Shermaine Campbelle (Wicket-keeper), Britney Cooper, Shanel Daley, Deandra Dottin, Pearl Etienne, Stacy Ann King, Kycia Knight (wicket-keeper), Anisa Mohammed, Subrina Munroe, Juliana Nero, Shaquana Quintyne and Shakera Selman. The India team is on an eight game tour of the West Indies, which includes three One-Day internationals and five T20 internationals, from February 18 to March 4.

Cricket fans and carnival revelers in the Nature Island are being given the special treat of experiencing world-class women’s cricket right after the official end of this year’s carnival celebrations. The host organizers, the Dominica Cricket Association along with the WICB, have priced the two match series in Dominica at only EC$10 for adults, while children 16 years and under will enter the Stadium absolutely free.

Dominica will also host the Australia Men’s Team against the Windies Men’s Team for the third test match in the Digicel 2012 Series, from April 23 to 27, 2012.
