Is Shane Shillingford the best since Lance Gibbs?

Shane Shillingford
Shane Shillingford

Greetings in the name of my Master, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

A former west Indies batsman and I were discussing about cricket. When I mentioned Shane, he then went on to say that Shane was not bad.

I took offence to that. I said he is as good as anyone playing test cricket today (as a spinner). I said to him that Shane is the best spinner to play for the West Indies since Lance Gibbs.

He said that Gibbs was in a class of his own. I said, so is Shane, and he is only getting better because,
he is like wine, the older it gets, the better it taste.

Lance Gibbs took 309 wks at 29.09 in 79 tests. Shane has played 10 tests and has taken 48 wks at 31.22, so he is on pace to pass Gibbs.

He said that Ashley Nurse was the one Shane should be worried about. I asked him why should he be worried, is it because he is from your Island? My good friend took offence to that, saying “Rev, you disappoint me.”

Nurse has played two T20’s and has not taken a wicket, but he has a point. We must not forget Irving Shillingford, after scores of 39, 2,120,15 and 23, he was dropped for Collis King from Barbados. So, Shane don’t relax; keep working on new things and always keep your eyes on the Great Jesus and we know that the best is yet to come.

May God keep blessing Dominica always.

Love,

Rev. Rawls

So, what ever happened to Mr. Shillingford’s career? If i’m not mistaken, he was called for throwing. Hasn’t played for WI since 2014. Guessing Lance Gibbs’ Test haul is still safe from the likes of the Dominican Dynamo!

If we are talking sports, let us contain it to sports, your savior and Lord should not be mentioned!

As soon as you mentioned Jesus, a certain person took it on her own to blow it out of proportion, I am talking about that Dominica North York Canadian woman.

Liz, I have not read your thing, but I doubt you have anything much to say about cricket because you do not know about cricket. That is what you Elizabeth get for the last piece of nothing you wrote about me in that other forum at the end of last week!

    You thought I forgot!

With that said, I can say for certain you would be correct if you simply came out and said Shane is the best thing to happen in that field of bowling on the West Indies side since Lance Gibbs of Guyana.

We did not need a rocket scientists to figure that out, nevertheless, anyone who followed West Indies Cricket between from 1962, on into the 1970’s and early 1980’s when Garfield Sobers, Kanji, Griffith, Joey Carroe, Nurse, Wesley Hall, Conrad Hunt, and until the days a bunch of Leeward ilsanders dominated.

There has never been any one as effective as Shillingford since Lance Gibbs!

There came and went some all-rounder’s who got a few weeks, however no spin, has been this successful as Shane for a very long time, and I disclosed that here on DNO a few works ago after his great performance in which he shun so brilliantly!

First we dubbed Irving Shillingford the little master, I believe Jefferson Charles coined that; in recent years the Antiguan’s copied and brand Vivian Richards the master, someone wrote a Calypso in which they praise him their master.

However, I the king of mud, the king of Wesley, crown Shane Shillingford, the real master of the masters of spin bowling. I watched a few of his delivers, to me his deliveries are almost at medium past, any spin ball pouring down at a batsman at medium pace, the actual speed of some medium fast bowler, is going to be extreamly difficult negotiate.

That has been Gibbs success, so too it has become Shane success!

No I did not speak about Cricket–I do not know anything about Shane Shillingford–except for what I read about a few weeks ago.

If you had read my comment, you would see that I wrote to rebuke that “Reverend Rawl” fellow, who is claiming that Jesus is his Master–but he is nothing more than a lazy servant.

I doubt that God called him at all–are you not family with his silly discuss, when he talks pertaining to God’s Word. I am still wondering why he claims to be a Reverend.

Also if you are talking about thumbs rating, against me, I could not care less about them–all of those individuals who thumbs me negatively, are simply idiots who cannot deal with my wisdom and understanding, for that resource is not of this world–that is their problem not mine–I don’t belong to the world either.

The commentator who said that the writer, of the news article, used Shane to attract the crowd of Dominica, he or she is correct and very observant as well.

But still for all the majority of the crowd responded negatively. Someone said the news article made no sense at all, that is my exact sentiment.

I love Shane, and i wish him all the best in his cricketing career. He is also the best test spinner in the Caribbean at this present monemt.
Honestly, i do not think that he is already in the category of Gibbs, but once he sets his mind to it, who knows!
He does not have to worry about Nurse. That’s a distraction. He just needs to spinn the opposition out.I am also confident that he can perform overseas… GO FOR IT SHILLY!
Trust me the politics and insularity in West Indies cricket will never go away!

Shane is a great DOMINICAN cricketer. To put him in the same context as Lance Gibbs is really a joke at this stage. I can understand the excitment that Shane is creating but lets think about a few things.
Gibbs came along in an era where there was no Zimbabwe or Bangledesh & where test pitches where a lot less condusive to spin bowling than there are now. It was also an era of great batting line ups that not one country can claim now.
Australia for instance would have had the Chappells, Walters, Redpath etc. India would be Gavaskar, Vishy, etc. This level of batsmanship does not exist now.
Last but not least, & I know this one will cause some comment, Gibbs was never given the freedom of 15 degrees of straightening the so called great off spinners of this era are allowed & therefore the “doosara” would not have been available to him. One can only guess at the added amount of wickets Gibbs would have taken had he been allowed that freedom.
Lets not get carried away people. Comparing Shane to Gibbs after having only taken 3 wickets in tests outside of the Caribbean & 20 of his 48 wickets on pitches prepared specifically for him in his home country is absolutely ridiculous & will make people reading that article laugh at the obvious “home” bias that we are always so quick to accuse others for.

      Shut up you idiot!

What do you know Garvaska , is known for his batting rather than bowing, he scored a few centuries in Port-of Spain, at an some point on his home turf against the West Indies when the wicked was completely ; the wicket did not help the West Indies.

Another time the over come the West Indies, when Sobers failed to , he scored zero, on that same day both Sobers, and Gavaska had newly born sons. Garfield Sobers mind may have been on his wife and new born son in Barbados and might not be able to function so, they lost a couple of matches.

And do not sing the song to me about ” it was Garvaska, the real master, you know the West Indies could not out Garvaska at all, not at all, you the West Indies could not out Garvaska at.”

That was the same day his and Sobers wife gave birth to their sons!

In any even you cannot compare any Indian team to a West Indies team in that era , or the days of Sobers and company, so all you are talking makes no sense to people who knows cricket, and the history of West Indies Cricket!

If you are talking about Garvaska, you are talking about a time when West Indies taught the cricketing world how to win at cricket.

” The British taught us how to play cricket; now we are teaching them how to win.” (Wesley Hall).

And if you want to know about Wes Hall, I can tell you one time thy clocked his delivery in London, and found out on a cold day his balls flew to the British batsmen at 115 miles per hour!

The title of the article and the article itself does nothing. I was expecting an answer to the question …now i’m left with more answers.

But Shane still has to prove himself..he has ways to go before he can and should be compared to players who have made a name for themselves.

He is good, he is great, (by many standards) but i sti;; think he has not yet proven himself…but he might just do so given time

Rawl, don’t allow yourself to be blinded by nationalism. Shane bowled a good game against Australia. He then went on to damage Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is a notch above club cricket. You cannot compare Gibbs’ record, having played 79 test matches against significantly better opposition than those that Shane has played against.

When Shane has played 30 to 40 tests and has done consistently well, then we can have a conversation. Shane is a good bowler, but you have to give him a chance to prove himself. Just because we all come from Dominica does not make him great.

Shane will only be respected fully when he brings home the goods on overseas tours..

If he can’t win a match for windies the selectors have many options to play with…

folks need to stop thinking that level, as it’s way too early..the overseas tours like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa..and folks need to know that their are good players of spin bowling…

  12. Bawi Boy
    April 8, 2013

This article makes no sense. You cannot compare a man who has only played 10 test matches with some who has played over 300.

    • Anonymous
      April 8, 2013

Gibbs actually played “only” 79 tests back in an era when much less test cricket was played — his test career spanned 1958-1976 (http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/51883.html). But your point is well taken that Shane, after playing only 10 tests, including 2 matches against a very weak Zimbabwe team, should not at this stage be compared to Gibbs. It’s a very dubious extrapolation, based on Shane’s short career to date, to say that he “is on pace to pass Gibbs.”

Is Shane Shillingford the best since Lance Gibbs?
Rev. Rawls Pacquette – Sunday, April 7th, 2013

Sir, when I saw the headlines of this news article, I opened it to read from a person of Sports, or anyone else, but a person of your Title and or Status.

I do not know anything about “Shane Shillingford”, except that he is from Dominica; and he is doing very well in Cricket, which I also love. And so, I have nothing against this news article about him–even if it is still irrelevant–for you said nothing that others do not know.

My concern is that our people of Dominica are lacking of “Spiritual” wisdom, understanding, and revelation; because of no appetite for God’s Word, which has to be the food of Life–for that is the message I receive as I read from their views of God and Life on DNO.

And yet you of all persons have chosen to ignore this fact–it has been quite a while since your wrote a word on DNO, and you enter here now, from since that time with: “Greetings in the name of my Master, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” Sir what is the reason for the hypocrisy?

And then you end your talk of “nothingness” about Shane with “May God keep blessing Dominica always. Love, Rev. Rawls” Sir don’t you know that God will only accept this plead from you through your sincerity of faith?

Sir are you thinking that your silly discuss with your friend about Shane is a “grand sermon” to enlighten the minds of our sleeping and spiritually starved souls in our Dominica?

How on earth do you think that Jesus Christ is happy to be your Master, when you act like the “lazy servant” of His parable in the Bible?

Sir, if claim to be the Rev. Rawls whoever, you have claimed the responsibility to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the Word of Life to those who are perishing; Shane is just another human being; anybody can talk about him, much better than that silly input above, but not anybody can preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Can you prove to us that you are one of God’s chosen servants, called to preach His message of Salvation and Reconciliation to those who are searching for this Life?

Otherwise you should get rid of your title–maybe you should also leave Jesus Christ out from your silly talks as well. So far you have done nothing for Jesus Christ–who only wants people to know Love and Life for Eternity.

@Lizavier4Jesus – What utter nonsense you talking dere now nuhh…….

I’m gonna have to constructively rebuke you for this blunder. So you telling me and the rest of the world that a pastor cannot talk about or give his views on other issues such as sports, the economy etc in a public or social forum den.

Are you aware that there are pastors and other genuine children of God – saved by his grace – who are actively involved in wholesome things of this life such as playing and commentating on sports while others are economists, pilots, accountants, lawyers, bankers, farmers etc with their views on their field of work or wholesome interests?

……smh………..Lizavier4jesus, in this instance, could you please stop twisting the word of God in an extremist manner to generate false doctrine. Thanks.

Here is the response from the blogger identified as Dominiquen April 8, 201 “Shane was picked only to excite the Dominican crowd”

I know that blogger is saying–perhaps you are not smart enough to understand that gesture. But I know what it means.

But just take time and read all the comments, you will notice what I am saying–see that the majority has responded negatively–if you know what the word means.

My question was what is a man who calls himself Reverend doing with a post about Cricket, that makes no sense at all? All those who did not write against me, has the same question like me. I will say no more!

And even if I should find that you are my mother, I do not want to be your friend either; for you do not qualify in my category of friends.

Nonetheless I have the great feeling that all the different identities against me here, including you, is from the same individual.

      To lizaver4Jesus

Why you portray such arrogance while masquerading as someone who has spiritual wisdom when in fact you have no such wisdom. Arrogance can sometimes be described as the art of being proud of your own stupidity and this does not show you as someone who has spiritual knowledge.I have come to describe you as someone who is intoxicated with Religious dogma.Who ever bestowed to you such authority claiming to be someone who is knowledgeable about spiritual wisdom. This is what you need to know, beware of false knowledge it is more dangerous than ignorance.Yes, you are entitled to believe what ever you want but to say and believe you are an authority on spiritual matters is nonsensical and egotistic.

Why are you attacking The Rev. on his religious beliefs, is this called for, can you not just comment on something and make it secular, does it always have to contain your religious babble.

      • April 8, 2013

        @Gary April 8, 2013

It is quite clear that I provoke the demons in you, every time I write and you notice my writing–perhaps you do not even read it; but that is exactly how Satan does his work in creatures like you.

I also believe that you have a legion of those demons in you, and you refuse to acknowledge that you want to be freed from their torment and torture in your mind–that you might come to hear and see, so to responds to the things of Life.

I advise to admit your flaws and to send your petition to Jesus. Just like the man in the Bible who was plagued in his mind by the demons of death–like you and your counterparts who cannot receive me on this blog–you and your friends should ask Jesus for an exorcism

He might even send those demons in you guys, out to a herd of pigs, that will go into one of our rivers in Dominica and drown themselves.

I am sure by that time you and your friends will indeed go away from me. I want nothing to do with futility and death. “For what has “Light” got to do with “darkness” That darkness is who you and your counterparts present yourselves to be–I have the eyes that can see so don’t blame me, for who you individuals are.
