A five man team from the Kalinago territory has won from a field of four teams in a cross country relay race held in the eastern part of the island on Saturday.
The race began from the Castle Bruce junction and ended at Good Hope.
The winners took home gold medals, a trophy and EC$ 300.
The team from Dipax came in the second place and received EC$ 200 and silver medals. In the third position was the team from Good Hope, who received EC$ 100 and bronze medals.
The winning team and the second place winners were also given an additional EC$ 100 each courtesy United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for Castle Bruce, Isaac Baptiste.
The only female group in the race received EC$ 50 from the coach of the Castle Bruce Secondary School, Stanton Seraphine.
Seraphine said he hopes this event becomes an annual one, and made a case for a sports facility for the area.
“Let me just say to our parliamentary representative, we are happy that you are here today, and that’s just to show you the importance of sports in the communities of Good Hope, San Sauveur and Petite Soufriere, and Castle Bruce also,” he stated.
“There are very talented young people” he said “and for years we have been crying to you for the importance of a playing facility. I hope this is just to give you a small sign that we really need something where we can go recreate and enjoy ourselves and to develop our skills and talents.”
“We want you to work on that for us; we really need a playing field,” Seraphine urged.
He lamented that too many times they have to go to the Castle Bruce playing field and it takes time and money to get there. “So if we can get one playing field we are happy,” he said.
In response, Parliamentary Representative for Castle Bruce Johnson Drigo said their wish will come true in his next term in office.
“We always debate over a playing field,” he said. “San Sauveur, Good Hope, Tranto, will get a playing field. It is part of the overall development plan for this area, but we will move from stage to stage. But I promise you that in my next administration you will get a playing field.”
The event was part of the Good Hope Reconnect which is in its second year. There will be an educational session on Wednesday, where representatives from the Dominica Social Security (DSS) and the Credit Union will be in attendance.
However, Chairman of the Good Hope Village Council Ashill Grove said that the other activities to observe the event have been postponed until further notice.
Trophies and medals for the event were sponsored by parliamentary representative for the area, Johnson Drigo.
great job my family lol chicas
The females should not be in the same category as the male. They should’ve been judged differently. If there was only one team as long as they finish, they should get a gold medal with the $300.00. Men are naturally stronger and faster. The male and female race should be separate.
Great work, Ashille & Stan! Continue making your much appreciated contributions to the development of your communities! We, the youth, are very happy with the initiatives being taken!
P.S.: Admin: A total of eight (8) teams participated in this Cross Country Relay.
