A recently formed Laudat Sports Committee has as a plan the extension of the village playing field and the construction of a basketball court, in it’s quest to keep the youth in the village engaged in positive programs.
Chairman of the committee Andrew Stedman told Dominica News Online that sports is seen as one of the avenues which could divert the youths’ attention from drugs and violence.
He noted a major challenge faced by sports men who use that playing field is the lack of a water supply on the playing field.
He said that that matter is being looked into.
The committee organized a fund-raising grand sports day on Sunday, featuring football, cricket, rifle shooting, raffles and ball tossing competitions, accompanied by a DJ. The funds from the event will be used to purchase uniforms for village teams to compete in an upcoming District Sports Festival in April, organized by the Sports Division.
According to Stedman, the Laudat Sports Committee was formed last year and has undertaken sporting developmental programs with the aim of developing sports in the village .
“Sponsorship has been coming in kind of slow, so we the committee decided to do our own fund raising for the sports festival. We are trying to raise funds to purchase uniforms for a football, basketball, volleyball and cricket teams,” Stedman said.
Last week the committee also organized a mini sports day which included a 20/20 cricket match and rounders game. Stedman noted that the turn out was good.

Great Job Andrew, i really like your work…
Excellant work Mr. Stedman. Sports is definately a great thing to occupy young minds and keep them out of doing bad things. In the U.S. sports from grades 7-12 are associated with schools and tax dollars sent from the state governent to schools support the sport programs (uniforms, travel, equipment) It is too bad the Dominica central government can’t spend a little bit of money in each community on sports programs, it would probably lower drug use and the crime rate and be money better spent than on the back end with police, courts and prison gaurds.
For grades below 7, we ask local business to sponsor teams, so you could ask Digicel to buy uniforms for one team, Astephans a team, Whitechurch a team, Subway, etc.
Good Luck.
good job andrew lets try to keep the fund raising activities every week or every other week. we need to develope our community and keep our youths occupied positively
positive things Laudat. Hope we can see the resurgence of sports in our communities. It was good in the past….
