The image of Dominica’s athletes will be enhanced due to a sponsorship of competition uniforms from Nike, says President Dominica Amateur Athletics Association, Cedric Harris, at a press conference held on the weekend at Dominica Public Service Union Conference Room, Valley Road, Roseau, Dominica.

DAAA is the governing body for athletics in Dominica.

“We have received competition gear from Nike to be worn during the 2015-2016 athletics calendar and the Association wants to share this great news/sponsorship with the rest of Dominica and the world by extension,” Harris said.

With the help of Nike, the DAAA will be able to erase “our athletes’ worry about the appropriateness of their clothing, leaving them free to focus on delivering at their fullest capacity during competitions,” according to Harris.

“It is said when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do good,” he noted. “These uniforms sponsorship kit will meet its objective and we are hoping to form a strategic alliance to benefit our athletes and athletics. In fact, it will also help sharpen the global image of our athletes.”

The following were received from Nike:
Pants- 49
Jackets- 49
Shorts- 142
Singlets- 84
Airborne- 26

The total of 350 pieces carries a value of US$4,785 or EC$13,015.20

It was agreed that the uniforms will be worn by Dominican athletes at the Beijing IAAF WORLD CHAMPS 2015 and Rio 2016 Olympics Games.

“We recently participated in two major International competitions, Pan AM Games and IAAF World Youth Championship where Dominica was represented by qualified athletes,” Harris noted. “DAAA athletes are getting ready to travel soon to the NACAC Championships which will be held in Costa Rica from 5th-10th July, 2015.”

The team members for that competition are:
• Andre Bazil- Javelin (men)
• Brendan Williams- High Jump (men)
• Bavon Sylvane- Long Jump (men)
• Dillon Simon- Shot put & Discus (men)
• Mitchel Davis-100m & 200m (men)
• Yordanys Duranora Garcia- Triple jump (men)
• Thea Lafond- High jump & Triple jump (women)
• Cedric Harris- Coach/Delegate

“There are other things the association has planned for the rest of the season: an athletics coaching course 14th Sept to 19 Sept 2015,” Harris revealed. “We are expecting maximum participation from schools (Primary) teachers and community leaders in sports. We are also looking towards the future for the construction of a state of the art 400m MONDO 8 lanes Track. We are hoping that everything goes through where the other stakeholders are concerned.”

Harrris continued, “In closing, the executive members of the association know that recognition is a powerful motivator for companies such as these Nike. It is with this knowledge we have openly demonstrated our gratitude and our appreciation to Nike for this wonderful gift. Again the DAAA executive, athletes, well-wishers, and Dominica athletics community say thank you, thank you, thank you to Nike. As President of the DAAA, I take this opportunity to say these uniforms will be put into good use. Our relationship will develop into an alliance.”

What kind of Journalism is that? Can you at least spell the young man’s name right? Its SYLVAIN and NOT Sylvane. Jeeze man!

ADMIN: Article clearly says “press release.” Call the people who submitted it with your grievances.

NIKE is really about Sneakers but we have a picture here with Nike signs on the tops but everyone wearing a different type of shoe. I think the first part of the sponsor should be for comfortable sports shoes.

    Just saying

Rome was not built in a day. I say we should say thank you and hope that next time around we can get more. There are many nations in the world who carry the brands making it easier and more rewarding for the athletes and countries by extension.

Great for the athletes. On the team for the NACAC Championships, I see many technical event athletes. Why is there not a Technical Coach listed to assist the athletes? From experience, the delegate will be lost in meetings somewhere and the athletes will be left to fend for themselves.

Best of Luck to the athletes. Make Dominica Proud.

    OLD!!!

I thought trainers, sneakers, and whatever grandma call them “tennis shoes” were all the same. Why would a person say they were begging? “JACK” explain how the team is begging? and then define sponsorship?

Trainers (Sneakers should have been a must) A company as nike should have done better than that, i am not being negative but realistic.

When are we going to create more Black business men and women in Dominica to stop begging other countries for every thing. What is the plan for the future do we have one. We have been begging since the British left , are we humans like every one else, or are we of an inferior Race. How long it is going to take to solve this problem.
