Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has congratulated Shane Shillingford on his phenomenal performance at the just concluded second Test against Zimbabwe at the Windsor Park Stadium.

The prime minister said his government will recognize the outstanding cricketer “in a tangible way.”

“On the behalf of the government and the people of Dominica I would like to congratulate Shane Shillingford on his exemplary performance at the just concluded Test series against Zimbabwe,” he said.

Skerrit said although everyone was disappointed that Shillingford was dropped for the series before the Zimbabwe one, his performance has sealed his place on the West Indies team. “He has demonstrated beyond the shadow of a doubt that his selection on the team cannot be questioned …our hope is that his performance will serve as a motivation to many young people,” he said.

During the match Shillingford bulldozed the visting team bagging a total of 10 wickets, 5 in each innings. West Indies eventually won the match by one innings and 65 runs.

In the previous Test in Barbados Shillingford claimed 9 wickets.

His amazing feat earned him the titles of Man of the Match and Man of the Series.

PM Skerrit said in the next few days the government will recognize Shillingford’s performance as it did after the Windies/Australia Test at the Windsor Park in 2012. Back then he was named Goodwill Ambassador and was issued a diplomatic passport.

“His performance no doubt calls for some form of tangible recognition,” he said.

A photo of the PM on the field shaking Shane’s hand would have been better. Also the minister for sports. She should work along with the PM; say something too. That’s sad! Get new reading glasses.

Let me enlighten all other Dominicans that may be confused why the PM is rewarding Shane in a tangible way!

Maybe because Shane’s performance has turned on some head lights on the Nature Island of Dominica. His performance/abilities, and contribution, is a harvest that, will grow, shape and prosper the minds of the youths in Dominica, allowing them to give it all they can, in what ever they are involved with (Education, Sports, Entertainment etc).

Just like Micheal Jackson, Micheal Jordan, and many more inspired the people of this World with their abilities! so is Shane doing for Dominica, and the West Indies, and all of the cricket World!

God Bless Shane and his people! Amen!

Congratulations to Shane! Hip! Hip! Hip!
He has made Dominica proud and silenced the critics. This is the way you handle criticism, with performance.
Now Mr. Skerrit, there are 10 budding athletes waiting for financial assistance to participate in the CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas.
They need a tangible contribution.

    • Anonymous
      March 24, 2013

There has always been assistance for the athletes, even when no one else has given support government always did.The support from government for athletes to participate at the carifta games is budgeted annually. Isn’t it strange that it is only from last year we began hearing about carifta athletes begging for help? It is since Cedric Harris took over as president of DAAA we began having these problems. What you need to do is to ask Mr Harris to do his work properly, plan properly and do things on time and stop waiting LAST MINUTE and thinking that people are sitting there waiting on him with a cheque book. If Mr Harris had done his work properly the money that government has in its budget for the young athletes would have been paid long.
By the way what happen to the money that government gave the DAAA to send the student last year to the CAC games in El Savaldor to which they never made it because Mr Harris did not know the athletes needed visas. Was that money the government gave ever returned to the treasury?

I really doh understand our people. If the Prime Minister did not congratulate he would be the worst. Now he does is something else. Whether he was there to see a ball what happen to modern technology? I did not go to the game but I saw it on my computer?
Whey Bolt do well, he is rewarded tangibly? When the Grenadian did well at the Olympics he was reward tangibly and given RED CARPET and heroic welcome, Why can’t the Prime Minister do it for Shane? Come on people let’s leave politics out of it,everything is a political issue. Damm Grow up people. SHANE IS DOMINICAN and so is the PRIME MINISTER.

    March 23, 2013

I’ve met Shane Shillingford once. For a very brief moment. But this brief encounter left me with the impression that he is a very well-mannered, well culture, respectable young man. The sort of young man any parent ought to be proud of. And that’s outside of his exploits in cricket. I wish him a long career and tremendous success. I would love to see him become the highest wicket taker in cricket.

But, I will never understand our fascination – and that of our governments – with well-paid entertainers, which is what Shane is. Someone who is paid well for performing for us, entertaining us. This is what international cricket is. Why must we think that whenever one of these entertainers puts on a very good or exceptional performance- which is what they are paid to do – we must “reward” them? Aren’t the Man of the Match and Man of he Series reward enough? Isn’t the adulation reward?

What will we do if he takes 12 wickets in his next match? 15? All 20, even? What will we do if he takes 10 and scores a half century? Or a century? Where does it end? By the way, why aren’t we giving similar “rewards” to the teachers who spend their lifetimes helping to develop the Shanes of this world? Is it because their role isn’t high profile enough? Is it because they aren’t entertainers always in the face of the public? What about the nurses? And the other hard working public servants? Oh, yes, I forgot. There’s always the long service award at independence time. Great. No diplomatic passports, no plot of land, nothing. After all, they’re not entertainers. Entertainers who can afford to buy their own land.

If we are to “reward” – and I’d rather honour, which ought to happen later in his career – Shane, why don’t we do it in a manner that will benefit the entire country? Or, at the very least, a large percentage of the country? Why not do something really tangible like building a properly equipped and funded cricket academy for Dominican (and Caribbean) youth and name it after Shane? He can, when he’s not on duty, contribute some of his time to both helping the attendees – sometimes just a short talk will do – and helping to raise funds to maintain it. This will be bold and tangible and demonstrate that we are not simply seeking to score cheap political points.

In addition, let’s start thinking of a Shane Shillingford tour- to include a museum as part of the academy- that will take visitors to his birth place, where he went to school, where he played his cricket (we really should have done this for Irvin, Grayson, Norbert, Sebastian, Kentish, Laurent, etc) so there’s something by which to remember him/them and can become a tourist attraction.

And that’s just sports. Why not culture and education? Why can’t we do bold things and forget this nonsense of recognizing “in a tangible way” the odd and isolated performances for which people are well paid?

Right now, Mr. going to take every opportunity he get to score political points. Shane get a diplomatic passport already and was named Goodwill Ambassador, what is he going to do next? Give him a ministry? Nothing against Shane, he will no doubt continue to do well all over the world. But I thinking there, when Shane come back and put on an even better performance, Skerrit will maybe name a Village after him. Then when he repeat that performance, Skerrit will give him a personal gift of 1 million dollars from his booolow he have there?

      Ignorant

  19. Really??
    March 23, 2013

Yes brothers lets be happy for Shane but let’s also be realistic. Look at these numbers in the game.
Shillingford 221 balls for 10 wickets. 22.10 per wicket.
Samuels 110 Balls for 6 wickets 18.34 balls per wicket.

Does this make Samuels the better spinner????

What I’m trying to say is that until Shane has this type of success in different conditions & against different opponents we should temper our calls of greatness. Remember against England in England last year. Hmmm. It is one thing to do well in home conditions doctored to suit your needs but another to do well in conditions outside your comfort zone.
Please people Shane is no Warne, Ajmal or Murali yet. He still has a lot to prove. Don’t burden him down.
I will also like to warn the currators at Windsor Park. Preparing those type of wickets is not doing the game, the Windies or Mr Shillingford any good. It is only fooling people.
    Think about it.

    • tante merle
      March 23, 2013

What you talking about he did it in Barbados was the field doctored for Shane? Give the man his credit. the Indians prepare their fields to suit them as do the other teams so what is your problem…be happy for the man and encourage him to go on to greater heights.

Here goes the ‘One man rule’ again. The match just ended, cabinet has not met on this, his government has not taken a decision, but yet he is quick to announce that his government will reward Shane in a tangible way. It is quite clear that it’s going to be his call regardless of what others thin.
Shane I believe deserves to be rewarded and I do not have a problem with the PM congratulating him. I just think he making the rest of his cabinet look like the worth nothing as he is the one and only one that can announce his decision and who doesn’t like it sleep by it. Too much BIG MOUTH MAN! Dominicans love their cricket with a passion. People love to see or know that the game is played fairly. The Laws/rules governing cricket must be adhered to and obeyed, otherwise players face penalties for bevaving in a way that would bring the game to disrepute.

The ICC is strict and would punish anyone, class batsman/bowler or not for flaunting the Laws. No cricketer is above the laws of the game. No cricketer is bigger than the game. Players have been punished – fines, suspensions, even jailed (sports-fixing or match-fixing). Imagine, the captain could be fined for even the team’s failure to bowl the quota of overs within an hour.

The PM need to take note. Cricketers cannot disrespect the laws of the game and get away with any offence committed. No technicalities. Technology is used by a 3rd. umpire to show all evidence, to find the truth as pertains to bowling, batting, fielding/cathing aspects. The 3rd. umpire could reverse the decision of the standing umpire, if the latter’s decision was found to be wrong.

It is respect for the Laws/rules that ensures discipline, fair play, proper governance, level playing field, comraderie. It’s a win-win situation. Players develop into Law-abidding, respectable citizens.

He is the Prime Minister. It is expected that he would be the first one to congratulate Shane. I am certain that she understands that. Later the Minister of Sports will voice hers. The game ended today. Give her a break.

When Keshorn Walcott won the Gold Medal at Olympics for Trinidad, Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar rewarded him.

This article below is an excerpt from http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/A_HOUSE_FOR_MR_WALCOTT-166066756.html

“Among the goodies presented by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to Walcott yesterday was $1 million in cash “to be invested as he so desires”.

Walcott will also receive a home in the upscale community of Federation Park valued at $2.5 million.

“For bringing us such pride and recognition to the nation of Trinidad and Tobago Keshorn Walcott will receive 20,000 square feet, that is, four lots of land in Toco,” Persad-Bissessar said.

She also said, “A housing project to be called the Keshorn Walcott Housing Development will be established. This development will bring housing and employment to Toco.”

“The Lighthouse, a historical site, will now be known as the Keshorn Walcott Lighthouse standing as a beacon to guide us all towards what it takes to get to our dreams,” Persad-Bissessar said.

“A Caribbean Airlines aircraft will be commissioned to bear the proud name of Keshorn Walcott,” she said. Walcott was also given a model of a Caribbean Airlines aircraft.

He was also awarded a scholarship to the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) “to further his studies in his chosen field”.

Remember the GOVT of D’ICA is all about one PM no one else is allowed to speak without his authorization this is an individual who will allow things to get worst before lending a hand just wait and see what will happen at the last minute with the Carift Games PM will come in on his white horse to save the day and to get the praises from the people for doing what was suppose to be done before ask your self especially those who refuses to think for themselves “WHY” ..

Haha, you asking why skerritt? Well Matt and Q95 stole his thunder yesterday. He is not able to come riding on his red horse at the last minute to save the day for the athelets to the CARIFTA games,so he has to do something to make himself look good.

Professionals do not just play for fun. There is risk of injury which could mess a whole lot of things for their side and their country.

You are begging for more, eh. I think the game is over. The West Indies won.
You will find something to do at the weekend such as celebrating Shane’s victory if only with your family and friends. :)
