Parliamentary Representative for Roseau Central, Norris Prevost, has made a plea for young Volleyball players to be exemplary citizens and to develop a good lifestyle based on physical fitness.
Prevost made the call at the opening of the 2013 Secondary Schools Volley ball Championship at the Botanic Gardens on Wednesday.
“Our coaches would take us through the exercises, the discipline, the behavior and I know that these things were a very important part of making me the man I am today,” he said of his own experience. “I feel blessed that I have reasonable good health at the age beyond sixty. A lot of it I can attribute to sports.”
Prevost also had words of advice for the young players. “In life there are three things that are worth striving for and fighting for. The first is a good reputation, the second be a good example, and third is very important … it is to be in good health … that is a treasure and you must do everything to achieve, maintain and protect it,” he stressed.
Senior Sports Officer, Yehudi John, said the championship is one way of reviving the dying sports culture on the island.
“At the secondary schools what we are hoping to achieve through the house competition is the rejuvenation of the seemingly dying culture in sports,” he noted.
John went on further to say that it is giving students an opportunity they never had before to play volleyball.
“Thus resulting from this is an increase in the number of individuals showing interest in the sport and therefore affording more children the opportunity to play volley ball; particularly those who were not opportune enough,” he noted.
There was also a presentation of six balls from the Dominica Amateur Volley ball Association followed by a ballorama among the schools vying for the top spot in the championship.
Ten female teams and seven male teams from high schools across the island have registered to participate in the event.
i am trying to figure that out myself.where in the gardens? i guess they were only refering to the opening not including any matches
Where in the botanical gardens do they play volleyball?
This is an honest question? Where in the botanical gardens is volleyball played? Answer the question, don’t give thumbs down!
Someone asks a question because they want to know. Typical Dominicans, dexterous with the fingers but not the mind!!
