Sagicor Life Inc has made a financial donation of EC$3,395 to the Sagicor South East Football Club to assist in its day-to-day operations.

The cheque was presented to the manager of the club, Ron Green at a presentation ceremony held at the company’s office located on Independence Street in Roseau on Monday.

“We don’t just support our Sagicor South East Football Team financially, we tend to go to a lot of their matches sometimes to lend support,” General Manager of Sagicor, Cheryl Rolle said at the ceremony. “We all know that sports is healthy, sports make you grow mentally and physically, and it’s a good deterrent from all the negativity that we hear. So we want to continue to encourage the Sagicor team.”

Rolle mentioned that it is difficult for team members, who come from different districts including La plaine, Grand Fond, Morne Jaune, Boetica, Morne Rachette and Delices, to meet.

“We know that it is difficult for them because they come from five different districts… it’s challenging because they have to meet and they work at different places and they have to get back on the field to play,” she explained.

According to Rolle she hopes the football fields in Grand Fond and La Plaine be restored.

“For what I understand Grand Fond field is good with no lights and La Plaine field is not good with lights, so let’s hope that the football fields can be restored and that the youth will continue to make us proud and to represent Dominica,” she stated.

She encourages the youth to continue to perform and to work at their endeavours.

Meantime Green thanked Sagicor for the support through the years.

Green revealed that the 2015-2016 season starts on Sunday at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium and the team has been preparing for the event.

“The team has been preparing very well despite Erika and other disturbances, we have continued to train,” Green said. “We have a young, we have a strong team…we are looking forward to the season. This year the team is focused on the championship to ensure that we bring a much bigger trophy to Sagicor next year.”

During the ceremony, Green also handed the second place trophy, which the team won during the 2014/2015 season, to Rolle.

The team has been funded and sponsored by Sagicor for almost 14 years.

Congrats to SOUTHEAST and to SAGICOR. One for Football success in last year as seen in the Trophy, and to the reliable Sponsor, 14 years, yes, thanks!! But note the training challenges the players face coming from many villages, and the need for lighted playing fields especially in LaPlaine and Grand Fond. The talents, the benefits, the top performances we look for can only come when the authorities deliver the basic playing facilities for our young people. If they fail, what do we say about our young footballers who succeed despite these failures. Congrats SOUTHEAST for you succeed despite obstacles
