Shane Shillingford named Goodwill ambassador

Shane Shillingford

The Government has taken a decision to appoint Shane Shillingford as a Goodwill ambassador for his efforts and achievement in the third Digicel Test which ended in Dominica on Friday.

During the match he collected 10 for 219, the first West Indian spinner to achieve such a feat since 1966.

Sports minister Justina Charles made the announcement on Friday.

He will be issued with a diplomatic passport.

Why does everything in Dominica have to be a political debate? Why are Dominicans so backward thinking as to think that they must receive something for doing their damn job? Which is what Shane did his JOB i mean i am happy that his efforts were recognized but he got paid to do what he did. We all should work hard for we want so if Shane wants a piece of land maybe he should think of using his money wisely and save to buy one. He should be very happy he got a diplomatic passport he can go where ever he wants the pm didnt have to give him anything he was thoughtful enough to have done so. People must learn to appreciate gifts.

How pleasing it would be to all Dominicans,if they were told by their Govt. of all the non-Dominicans who were given diplomatic passports and appointed Ambassadors, just as it was done with Dominican Shane’s appointment. Why the inconsistency? Why were Dominicans not informed as well?

Again, In the case with non-Dominicans, did they receive our passports in exchange for plenty money, buying of our diplomatic immunity? Have some been involved in questionable dealings? A PR stint for Skerritt and his DLP Govt. in light of all the other concerns by the public regarding the alledged sales of our passports and secret appointments of Ambassadors? That is the reason.

Along with the DP, why didnt the PM see to that Shane drove off the stadium at the end of the game in a brand new SUV?? Shane would surely appreciate that better than the DP?? What will he do with the DP?? the man have his Dominica Passport already, not like he cannot travel on it, Just to say he have A Diplomatic Passport? Shane careless about Diplomatic Passport, Give the man A brand NEW SUV, Insurance paid for two years, tank full of gas and SUV Licence paid in full for two years noh. Ambassador??? Shane tell allu he want to be Ambassador, the man studying his cricket is Ambassador he studying nah lol. Give him a job in the ministry of Education & Sports when he is available, to go to the schools around the country and work with the young men. A few acres of land should be given to him as well. April 29, 2012

It is not so that a diplomatic passport automatically entitles you to travel to the U.S.A. without a visa or even helps you to get one. When Leroy Paris (of Clico, who had been given a Dominican passport and also been appointed a Goodwill Ambassador by Roosevelt Skerrit)tried to obtain a U.S. visa using that diplomatic passport in 2007, he was refused by the U.S.

  32. give him land
    April 27, 2012

Frankly, every Dominican must be proud of Shane’s efforts and achievements in that Test match home. But the spontaneous reaction and decision by Govt. to give Shane a diplomatic passport because of his performance at home in that match, is simply not well thought of.

With a diplomatic passport Shane is afforded diplomatic immunity whereever he is or wherever he travels in the world. Shane is already our Ambassador, since he made the team, since he was selected as a member of the West Indies Cricket Team. The idea, the appointment, is good for the public relations of Skerritt and his DLP Govt., therefore the spontaneous decision.

However, looking at it closely, our diplomatic passport is losing its significance and real meaning, given all the secret deals and secret appointments, selling of our diplomatic immunity to non-Dominican who have had problems with the law. One is now in a US prison. Another’s home was raided by police in Italy. Another faces charges in the Barbados court re. CLICO fiasco.

Let’s face it for real. So to save face and to try to score some points, Govt. quickly and hastily decide to give Shane that appointment and passport. But Shane is our diplomat long time. Shane is in need of a 2-acre parcel of land to set himself up in the future. That would be much more substantial and significant. But we know how it is, some people looking for sympathy, regarding all the daybas surrounding sales of our diplomatic passport to any person with plenty money and diplomatic immunity. We are not all fools in Dominica. Diplomatic passports going like sweety. Come on my people.

The good thing about this dipolmatic passport is, this time we know who has it, when it was given, and it was not bought. So use it Shane to represent us Dominicans although I thought it was a little too early for such award. I would have preferred keys to the Palace and be the person to cut ribbons and let other in. But again our diplomatic passport has lost its value and carrieres of such passport may still be subject to scrutiny in certain parts of the world.

Shane deserved every bit of the honour he got because he really made us proud! I thought he would have gotton the keys to the palace but I guess it was not for him.

Concerning the announcement of the award itself, I was indeed surprized that the PM was not the one to make the annoucement. I mean last year he was the one to announce Chanda’s citizenship and now a local boy was the hero and a diplomatic passport was to be awarded and the PM did not give that breaking news. I wonder why? Oh, maybe is because he wants to stay out of that ….passport thing!

While the award bestowed on a local hero made me proud, I must say that listening to the annoucer, Mrs. Charles was embarassing. She was not at all fluent, sounded very shaky, and you could tell she knows nothing about cricket; yet she is the minister responsible. she really sounded like a round peg in a square hole.

Congratulations to you Shane and the West Indies team on this achievement, i can clearly see with my spiritual eyes that God has a time and place to bless each one of us. How you use that blessing determines whether the enemy or God gets the glory. I am from west and i feel blessed to see such talent coming from the west. May God’s divine favour follow you Shane all the way and may you find comfort in his words of Phillipians 4. You can read it for yourself.

I just want to say one thing and that is, God has no favourites and he uses anyone at anytime to do his work. If it is Hon Skerrit he wanted to use as his instrument to bless shane with a gift then let it be.To God be all the glory, honour and praise. If you have a problem with the messenger then i can understand, that is if you have a significant reason but the advise that i want to give here is forget the messenger and concentrate on the message for it may be our turn next. I myself my tail is very long and i am being very careful with the words that i confess as words have power to build and to destroy.

God bless the home and community which raised you Shane. Continue to make all your benefactors proud. The little boys are watching you. Be a good role model and remember that Jesus came to die for us and we crucified him so if it can happen to Jesus then it will happen to you. Just dont give up your cross Shane, for if you are a cross bearer then you will be a crown bearer.

May God bless our nation with the fruits of the Spirit as i pray that we position ourselves for cardinal virtues,

Love you dominicans, peace and love to all.

May you find strength in this comment Shane. My family will continue to pray for you.

    • Francisco Telemaque
      April 27, 2012

Can you explain the honor in giving a diplomatic passport to Shane?

A Diplomatic passport simply gives one who carries it the privilege of going through immigration in a foreign country without hindrance, and unnecessary custom inspections of luggage, and in some case the person get to sit in the VIP lounge in the small islands of the Caribbean, rather than the regular departure lounge.

What happens in places such as North America where no one is regarded as the ” VIP” and is treated the same, if you are traveling across America, Diplomatic Passport or ordinary passport you will not set foot in a aircraft without going through some security system, so what’s the big deal?

If one is the a resident diplomat of a country and they commit a crime in that country, the person would be immune from prosecution; however we have seen diplomats prosecuted in this country after involving into crimes as drunk driving; we have seen foreign government withdrew envoys diplomatic passports, and left them in the hands of the law of the country in which they commit the crime.

Besides just because one has a diplomatic passport, that does not simply give them the right to travel into someone’s country, without presenting their credentials to the appropriate authorities, who must accept it.

I will leave it there for you to ponder and figure it out, it is one thing to be glad and talk nonsense, but when we know how it actually works we discover that in Shane’s case having a diplomatic passport means squat doodle to the rest of the world, whereas it creates some excitement in Dominica.

Around 1981/82 a government minister from the Cayman island was caught in Miami in an FBI sting dealing in drugs, and money laundering, his Diplomatic passport did not prevent the DEA from slapping the hand cuffs on him and locking him up in jail!

Think about that and what is the actual significance of a Diplomatic Passport, if we are giving the man something, it should be of significannce, and not simply because we are glad, or we believe it will ring a political bell.

I am not into the politics, so I hope I will not get a bashing over my comments!

      Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

      • forreal
        April 29, 2012

well i am glad you did not mention the land part to,because i know for sure that you know the shillingfords are large land owners,so the question of the government giving shane land,is know issue,so is only the people who do not know the shillingfords can make that suggestion.

  44. Dominican for sure
    April 27, 2012

I am not against shane being rewarded for his efforts, however, i dont think his performace warrants a diplomatic passport as yet. He shld have been allowed to prove himself still. This decision was taken too quickly.

  45. Francisco Telemaque
    April 27, 2012

I can understand something of value, such as an amount of land where he can build a house, would serve a much better purpose.

We saw V. C. Bird the late Prime minister of Antigua, in the 1970’s gave to both Andy Roberts, and Vivian Richards, land on which they both build their houses.

Perhaps a bit of choice land, and a home, would serve him a better purpose!

The title of Goodwill Ambassador sounds good, however, one wonders what service shall he render, and in what part of our universe will he be sent to perform the duties of goodwill will, perhaps teaching people to play cricket; or some other skills?

What are his special skills besides cricket?

For such sounds as the duties of an off season cricketer.

With my knowledge that an ambassador should be an official envoy, or shall I say an diplomatic agent of the highest rank accredited to a foreign government or sovereign as the resident representative of his/her own government; or appointed for a special, and often a temporary diplomatic assignment!

It becomes even more difficult to comprehend what purpose he may serve, other than an authorized representative, or indeed a messenger.

Here is where I become confused: when we are talking about goodwill that entails a kindly feeling of approval and support, we can add benevolent interest or concern to that!

So, I must ask the minister who propose to bestow this honor on Shane to define Shane’s position, and what shall his function and duties entail.

    Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

I would really like to know what qualifies one for such an honor, because when you give persons a diplomatic passport you’re giving them immunity to go in and out of people country, so there has to be some serious standards to be met….I’m waiting.

Shane you know how Jamaican Ussain bolt uses the lightening bolt as his symbol I have good idea- why not show them the Shooo Shut sign. People lighten up – the Shooo Shut is an illusive bird and that bird is a favorite delicacy in the village of Dublanc. Also use the opportunity to promote the Zaid Rum from the village of Dublanc.

I know I am going to get some flack but hey you never know

Good job Shane……but I must warn you, West Indies selectors doh have patience with spin bowlers. Just talk to Bishoo. Last year he was the flavor of the day. See where he is now. You must be on top of your game always otherwise you will be bring the drinks to the players on the field.

MY best advice to you it to not rest on your laurels.

I have heard CLive Lloyd say it…West Indies do not have patients with spin bowlers. Heed my word.

  67. No secret now
    April 27, 2012

We are certain that Shane did not pay thousands or millions of $$$$$$$$$ to anybody, in exchange for the diplomatic passport, unlike some of the non-Dominicans who were appointed as our Ambassadors, and received diplomatic passports in exchange for whatever…….

How comes Govt. found it fit to announce publicly Shane’s appointment as Goodwill Ambassador and his receipt of a diplomatic passport, but was secretive about the appointments of Ambassadorship of the non-Dominicans? Why was the information hidden from the public? Govt. is hoping, that in the former case, no one would complain or be against. But in the latter, the deal was maybe too good to tell us, for fear that we would ask questions and demand answers.

Were It not for the investigations and revelations by Dominican patriotic citizens we would be in the dark about those appointments and dishing out of our diplomatic passports to those foreigners who had questionable dealings.

There has been lately a lack of confidence in our people to do. Construction works, that locals could do, are awarded to foreign Cos., our NBD is managed by a foreigner, PWC cast aside couldn’t even be contracted to lay asphalt on a major road project, electric Co. sold to a foreign co. Marpin sold to a foreign co., geothermal l in the hands of a foreign co. Shane showed all of us that we can, if we try hard. So Shane has earned his appointment. But we will never accept or forget the secret, irresponsible dishing out of our diplomatic passport to all and sundry or/and the selling of our diplomatic immunity to the highest bidder.

Congratulation to you Shane Shillingford and I wish you continued success! Man of the series in my opinion. Seldom does a bowler get a 10 week hall in a series at that level and to add a valiant batting performance to bring the score to within respectability. A good batsman can always get his runs! In addition, Chanderpaul’s slight lapse of focus/concentration resulting in him getting out on the last over of the day gave Australia all the confidence and momentum in the world after having worked to take it away all day. It was his responsibility to stay and bat and get at least a century. Shane did is job bowled superbly all series!

Every body must go play cricket because once you do what you are paid to do the government of dca gives you a passport.

You dont need to prove yourself, 10 years too much, just try a ting for 2 or 3 years, even if Windies may never call you back to play in a big game or you might drop out 6 months after.

When is the next registration for national cricket team so i can start working on my diplo passport?

I have no choice but to feel sorry for a lot of my people.
No one is saying that Shane does not deserve well, no one is saying that we are not happy for him,,,

But when diplomatic passports become the prize we give to people who do us proud, there is reason for concern.

What about a $10,000 check if his performance is so meritorious. Even a nice little car, even though my tax payer money pays for it.

But when it appears that diplomatic passports are treated as a pat on the shoulder, come on !..

I am not trying to take away anything from Shane’s accomplishments here. I think he did a remarkable job in the games that he played in the series. However, there has to be a value placed on our passport. This is ONE game and ONE game only. The goverment has to start placing more values on our cirtizenship and our passport. First they sell our passport to whoever can afford it. Then it was Chanderpaul, now Shane. Who’s next?

Shane, make no mistake, this diplomatic passport they gave to you is to benefit the DLP. This is for them to curry favor with the public. They are using you my boy. Do not be fooled by these gestures.

is that at skerrit clouded judgement or at shanes achievements… i am sure everyone loves shane for being dominican right now, but i cannot comprehend skerrit’s judgement..

      • Tiger
        April 27, 2012

You must have a comprehension problem. Who is taking anything away from Shane? Before you jump, read and understand what is being said.

This argument is not about Shane and what he did. It is about the government cheapening what is supposed to be very precious. When you give something away so easily it loses its value. Got it now?

If Shane has been consistent in doing that over a number of years, then he would be all means deserve to be an ambassador. Take Gary Sobers for example. do you ou think the Bajans made him an ambassador after he scored his first hundred?

      • April 28, 2012

It would be much better to understand some of the comments made no one is saying SHANE shouldnt be awarded for an outstanding job the young man work very hard and we will lift him higher always we wish only good luck in his future,SHANE is still an individual that have a long way to go still and when he is finished with playing what will be there for him it doesnt matter who have the diplomatic passport once it says DOMINICA it will be scrutinize so giving him land to build a house would be much appreciated and I dont mind if my tax money pay for it it would be much better.

Give him something else? Man, you crazy? That would cost real money. Passport does not cost Skerrit anything but make him look damn good and omni-potent. Be careful Shane you are not tarred with same brush as the likes of Leroy Paris or that Carollo fellow.Don’t want to see you in that category. You deserve better than that.

i would like to share this two part comment, first shane is well deserving, second in my opinoun sammy should be dropped as captain,i am very much disapointed in his last minute effort, the shot he played which got him out, was imature and stupid and lack discipline, for a captain who needed a win, rather he had gone not out with all the overs being bolled or time ran out, sammy lacks the sense of ergency when it is needed, sammy has not grown into a captain position and prospective, shillingfords batting to sammys was very classy, sammy could have made a better efort on his part to get his first test hundred, while shane would at least got his fifty.

    • forreal
      April 27, 2012

and to also add, this are complete strangers on our home turf, westindies had home court advantage and could not defend our yard, when they go on tour to places like australia, they complain of mistreatment bad food and all that, when these people come here they get treated like kings,on top of all this they still go out with a win,i for one fill hurt, except for the monies which our country made,i thank god for that,or rather we all should, one love people.

@forreal – Some of all you hate Sammy with a fervent hatred equivalent to the heat of a 1000 suns; hence your judgments and analysis are clouded. 11 people make up the playing team but is Sammy you deliberately choose to blame despite he trying to rescue the team as the top order batsmen failed. Keep on blaming Sammy for everything – when rain fall on you blame Sammy; when mosquito bite you blame Sammy; if the sun doesn’t rise tomorrow, just blame Sammy.

It is a good thing Sammy seems to be a fella who is not phased or troubled by the persistent unfair criticisms from the haters, pseudo-cricket analysts and servants of Gayle.

channel 1,for such a media title i forgive you because you do not have the slightest idea on what my sentiment is all about, allow me to enlighten you, since you have know knowlege of westindies cricket captaincy history when it comes to a vital last stand, let me put it vaguely,a captain never aboundon ship till the last man is of,in this case out, sammy and you need to take page from the book of great legendary clive,on what saving a game is all about, and you need to keep your crap shut, when you making statements of who is gayle servants, fool gayle is the greatest batsman in the westindies to date, some of us are not all about small island and big island,we support westindies cricket, and would love nothing more of seeing westindies rule the world once more, and if sammy does not have it,he simply does not have it,and bash all you want, thats just the way it is,we need to change on till we find a captain with temperance and the dicipline to know when to attack, and when to play defencive, did you not see the amount of overs to get seventyfive runs, you are fool i will end here.

Let’s keep the enthusiasm alive. Last but not least thanks to the DLP for making this possible.

  90. April 27, 2012

Great move from the government of Dominica timely and well deserved Shane Shillingford. If any body have a problem with this timely honor they need their head examined. And there will be some I Bet There will. All in all Dominica win”. And i hope it is clear to all those who thought otherwise will eat their words. I was very much impressed when the captain of the Aussies team gave Dominica high praise and full marks for the efforts. No more winding Roads “BS” and all the negative stuff. Hope the World knows where we are located and we will continue in that vein to promote Dominica to the world. Well done to the ministers who took full advantage to come on the air during the breaks and help press home the advantage for Dominica. Full marks to all and the people of Dominica at least this times like so many times before we should feel that we belong and that should be the way forward.
