Shiv falls leaving WI chase shaky

ROSEAU, Dominica – Shivnarine Chanderpaul fell in the final over of another compelling day, after he claimed another personal milestone and shared a century partnership with Darren Bravo, taking the sting out of West Indies’ pursuit of 370 for a series-levelling victory in the third and final Digicel Test against Australia on Thursday.

Chanderpaul made 69 and became only the second West Indies batsman to pass 10,000 Test runs, as West Indies reached 173 for five in their second innings at the close on the penultimate day at Windsor Park.

The durable left-hander reached the individual milestone, when he tucked a delivery from Australia captain Michael Clarke, bowling his uncomplicated left-arm spin, to mid-wicket for a single, moving him to 14.

Chanderpaul was granted honorary Dominican citizenship following the corresponding Test last year, when he blessed the ground with a hundred against India, and the crowd that swelled to half full the ground rose to cheer him as though he was one of their very own.

Batting legend Brian Lara is the only other West Indies batsman to pass the landmark. He finished his career with 11,953 runs at an average of 52.88 in 131 Tests.

Chanderpaul is the 10th batsman to score more than 10,000 runs in Tests. He now has 10,055 at an average of 50.02 in a West Indies record 140 matches.

He and fellow left-hander Bravo put on 110 for the fourth wicket to stem the fall of wickets, after Clarke winkled out Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell to leave West Indies 45 for three inside the first hour after lunch.

Chanderpaul reached his second 50 of the match from 90 balls, when he edged a full-length delivery from Ryan Harris between wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and slip fielder Michael Clarke for the third of his half-dozen boundaries from 148 balls in just over three hours of batting.

But he was adjudged lbw to Clarke, playing back and across to a well-pitched delivery, from the first ball of the day’s final over, as the West Indies chase hit a major snag with one day remaining in the match.

i just want to say thanks to the west indies for a great performance. however, west indians who continue to curse are west indies worst enemies. the power of life and death is in the tonge, what we confess that is what will be,we cry fail for the team and when they fail we are angry, let us pray for them and stop criticizing them, they are trying, let us continue to be proud of our own. ALL THE WAY WITH WEST INDIES

If WI win does Dominica get an international airport? Win loose or draw who cares? DNO isn’t there anything else going on in Dominica to report?

You are an idiot!!! You refused to open all the other news items which DNO has posted because you specifically wanted to open this one that talks about cricket, and then you want to be angry with the whole world. I think that you should go to the toilet and take a dump, because you really full of it.

Baugh needs 50runs Deonarine 80 not out Sammy needs a captain’s knock 75 not out… West Indies win by 3 wickets….. Then the celebration begins.
It’s going to be extremely hard for the Windies to win this one, but i can’t rule out anything in cricket (The game of glorious uncertainties). Wades 100 + for Australia is the difference there. Our bowlers cannot blow out the lower order batsmen,of opposing teams and this is now biting them in the butt.

Thumbs down because of the fact? We all need to grow up I’m not against W.I. I don’t want them to lose but from pass records its easy to see that the 200 runs needed is going to be a real task

DNO, on one of your previous news article which you put out at 11:10am, you said that Shane Shillingford was the first West Indian cricketer to take a 10 wkt haul on home soil since Gibbs did it in 1966. However, I find this piece of information to be false and misleading. First of all, I don’t remember Lance Gibbs playing a test match in Guyana (his home soil)in 1966 and took ten wickets in a match. In fact I dont even remember us having a test match in Guyana in 1966. Please proove it!
Also, FYI in 1985, the grate Malcom Mashall playing at home in Barbados against Newzeland had match figurs of 11 wickets for less than 130 runs. Furthermore, Corey Collymore in 2005 against Pakistan, in Barbados his home town, had match figurs of 11 wickets for under 150 runs.
Don’t come with false information thinking that all Dominicans are fools and we will just buy into lies.
Please publish this comment and do not throw it out as you usaully do. Please correct this info.

ADMIN: The Test Lance Gibbs took the ten wickets was not played in Guyana but Manchester, England in 1966. And we confirm that Shillingford is the first West Indian spinner to take ten wickets in a Test since then. Click on link below and note section that reads, “Earlier, Shane Shillingford became the first Windies spinner in 46 years to take 10 wickets in a Test as Australia were dismissed for 259 in their second innings.”

AS I SEE IT…..they are talking about spinners. please ask for a recording of what the commentators said and dont blame DNO for your lack of understanding and failure to hear properly.

    • April 27, 2012

Simple! What “AS I See IT” Ironically after reading the history of the game and knew all along it was being said regarding the record Re: Gibbs and Shillingford`s performance they are “SPIN BOWLERS” not all bowlers eg fast bowlers as ” I see it clearly Did not see It”. I hope “AS I Did not see it” accept his/her oversight and as in D.N.O.did check his /her facts before his/her brain is engaged and spare Dominicans and all D.N.O readers all that “GOT YOU” TYPE of Approach, cause we are not that stupid to jump to conclusion just because a story is posted on D.N.O. I will be nice and allow that one to slide, cause we all make mistakes and sometimes we doh see what we say we see.

I am always hapy to hear that there is cricket in Dominica. There is a time for everything. There was a time when the West Indies shone. Now the time is for others to shine. We will be back in full force some day.Let us not critisize our people. We need to build and not break down. Do not beat a dying horse. We did extremely well in this match. Some one has to win. GO WEST INDIES GO
