The old adage: Better late than never, rings true in this instance, as the sole playing field for the communities of Soufriere, Scotts Head and Gallion, which has faced regular flooding in the past, is about to be given some much needed attention.

On Monday, March 23, 2015, a contract valued at EC$234,602.99 was signed between the contractor, Ignace Detouche, of that community and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Constituency Empowerment, Mandra Fagan.

The project will see to the construction of 155 meters of concrete drains on the southern side of the playing field, also called the “Brooklyn Playing Field,” and should be completed within a 10-week period.

“I think it was long in coming because several storms have flooded this playing field several times and we have talked about it and we are here today witnessing this ceremony,” MP for Soufriere and Minister for Public Works, Ian Pinard said. “I think it’s a great day today.”

He informed that upon completion, the field will also be lighted and a multi-purpose court, which is further from that area, will be transferred there.

“Which means that the Soufriere (Brooklyn) Playing field will now be housing all the major sporting facilities in Soufriere, Scotts Head and Gallion,” he noted. “We also expect after the drain is completed, we will have the Brooklyn Playing field one of the best playing fields in Dominica.”

He thanked the government on behalf of the people of that area, adding that it is the expectation that sports will continue to thrive in these communities.

“I know we are behind but now we are coming,” Pinard said.

Meantime Minister for Youth, Sports and Constituency Empowerment Justina Charles said she is happy to be associated with this “important and significant event in the ministry of Sports.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Mandra Fagan added that “it is our hope that the improved playing facility will lead to an increased level of interest and participation of the youth in sports and also that it will generate employment for the Soufriere community and the environs.”

I suppose that this is a fraction of the contribution from the makers of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean”.

This is not a direct contribution from the government, but proceeds from the film makers, So people from the St Mark constituency don’t hail this as a labour funded project, because it Is not.
