South-West District Sports Festival slated for Pointe Michel

The last of the village-based District Sports Festival will take place on Sunday, October 9, 2011 from 1:00 pm at the Poree Playing Field in Pointe Michel where the villages of the South West district of the Dominica are expected to converge.

Villages from Loubiere to Scotts Head (including Giraudel) are expected to take part in this festival which is organised by the Sport Division. The sports that are expected to be played are football, rounders, netball, volleyball, track and field, basketball and cricket. The winner of this festival will be the representative of the South West District and will join the other top villages of the various district festivals to compete in the grand final on Sunday, November 9, 2011 at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth.

The other winning villages are Woodford Hill representing the North East District, Case O’ Gorie representing the South East District, Goodwill representing the West Central District, St. Joseph representing the West District, Lagoon representing the North District, Tete Morne representing the South District and Crayfish River representing the East District.

The District Sports Festival is one of the ways that the Sports Division is trying promote and develop sports the community level.  Other objectives are to
•    To introduce or reactivate the district spots committees
•    To encourage cross generational physical activities
•    To encourage recreation for fun and laughter
•    To provide the use of the playgrounds for various activities
•    To bring people together

Lagoon was last year’s overall winner and was awarded the “Top Sporting Village” award at the last National Sports Awards Ceremony, which was held earlier this year at the Fort Young Hotel on April 27, 2011.
