Sports Coordinator, Trever Shillingford, has revealed that the Sports Division has received funding from corporate sponsors for nearly half of the activities carded for the academic year.

He made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the Secondary Schools Athletics Championship, on Wednesday morning.

“After the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, we were informed that a number of programs, we would have to revisit these programs to achieve some level of savings. We did not want to compromise these programs, so, we went out on a hunt for achieving some financial support,” he said. “And, I’m happy to say that we have received sponsorship for six of our fourteen activities that will be held for the rest of the academic year.”

Shillingford went on to thank the unnamed sponsors for their contribution to the activities, and the young athletes of Dominica.

“So, I want to say a special ‘thank you’ to the various sponsors. We will be making a declaration shortly as to who the sponsors are, but we would like to say ‘thank you’ to the corporate community for continuing to support the activities of the Sports Division, and to continue to support you, the young athletes of Dominica,” he stated.

Meantime, Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau Central constituency, Joseph Isaac, called for increased sponsorship of the event, in an effort to give greater priority to sports and youth development.

“I want to congratulate the Sports Division for organizing year on year, this sporting activity… I want to call on corporate sponsors to keep on doing what you do,” Isaac stated. “I want to call on others to join in hands with those who have already contributed, so that we can we can make athletics in Dominica, and sports in general and youth development, a major number one priority for our youth in Dominica…”

Nice to see that the parliamentary representative for Roseau Central though on the Opposition really stand with the Ministry of sports and congratulations them and even call for assistance for promotion and hosting for sporting activities. This is how persons are to work together after politicking for the position of forming Government is over and Nation building should be the number one priority. I amean calling the Leader of the Opposition to display that kind of attitude for the development of our country. You are not scoring marks by all those rebellious attitude that you and your supporters are displaying. The latest being not putting a representative on the committee. That is the cooperation that is needed for the development of not sports for everything. There is no place for selfishness and self agrandissment in matters of Nation building.

Mr Shillingford congratulations too. Continue to do the good work that you are doing.
