SPORTS TAKE: Shane’s Blessing

Ronald Smith, MBA
Ronald Smith

Editor’s note: Dominica News Online is pleased to present the first edition of a sports column entitled “Sports Take”.  The first contributor to this column is sports enthusiast, Ronald Smith, who will be submitting an article every other Saturday. Here is his first piece.

International recognition of athletic achievement is a rarity for Dominica. We have nothing compared to what Brian Lara gave to Trinidad, Viv Richards to Antigua, Usain Bolt to Jamaica, or Kirani James to Grenada. The achievements of the handful of Dominicans who have played international cricket have gained very little international recognition. No wonder Shane Shillingford’s record breaking performance against Australia in 2012 placed us in this overprotective mode. Like a broody mother hen protecting her chicks, we protect our Shane; so much so, that we misinterpreted Fazeer’s article that seems to be satirically justifying Shane’s selection over Narine for the Zimbabwe test series.

Putting all emotions aside, can one honestly fault the West Indies selectors for giving Narine a trial run at the test level? At the time, Narine was the talk of the cricketing world; the mystery spinner mesmerizing every batsman, the player of the highly rated IPL, and one of the most influential players in West Indies World Cup success; albeit the shorter versions of the game.   I believe the more relevant question is why should Narine’s selection have been at the expense of Shane? After all, we have seen how detrimental it can be for opponents playing against two effective spinners. Like every other concerned Dominican, I too was disappointed with the selectors for dropping Shane for the Bangladesh tour late in 2012 and, to add salt to our wounds, the selectors partnered Narine with another spinner, Permaul.

Any player who feels he or she is unjustifiably dropped from their team should be anxious to embarrass the selectors whenever they get the opportunity to play again. Apart from the many tangible records from Shane’s performance against Zimbabwe, I believe the biggest record of them all is the intangibility of the embarrassment that the West Indies selectors have suffered. Though we are still bitter about Shane’s treatment we can now look at the bigger picture and consider the whole episode as a blessing. If Narine was not given the opportunity, who knows how many calls there would be around the Caribbean for the mystery spinner’s inclusion. Who knows if Shane would not be playing with an unsettled mind, fearing that his narrow room for error is a wide open door for Narine to walk in at any time? Who knew that his determination to embarrass the selectors would lead to his rewriting of the record books?

Zimbabwe is by no means a top tier international cricket force, neither is Bangladesh. But comparing Narine’s  3/343 in his two matches in Bangladesh to Shane’s 19/200 in as many matches vs. Zimbabwe, Shane can breathe a little easier (at least in the short-run) and concentrate on building on his recent success with improvements in the necessary areas. As West Indies fans we all love Narine, and we hope one day he will join Shane as a destructive duo of spin bowling that has the potential to take West Indies much higher in the test rankings.

In the mean time….Wi ALL IN WITH SHANE!!!!

    A REPLY TO FAZEER MOHAMMED

But this Trini well farse to attack our Shanie and his bowling action. Them trickidadians seem not to have learnt from their 10 minus 1 is zero days and they still live in lalaland hoping and preying (yes preying on the ) that their fortunes will change.

Fazeer, is not we fault that Shane is pelting wood and you have to comfort yourself with pelting your lil twig. You see, Shane never put heself ahead of the line, and your diminutive self is responsible for your sorry status. So go easy on our Shane garcon!

We’ve walked down that arrogant Trini road before and it seems that they never learned. They have now landed and with Fazeer Mohammed spewing his customary garbage, we need to keep our wallets close. You see the money that flowed like water, ein flowing no more and they now realize that they must send us their solo and products if they are to even survive.

You know how Trikidadians does operate, they think they have the monopoly on everything, even opinion or satire. Fazeer have been shafted by his own people and he now seeks to curry favour with them by slagging down our Shanie but notin tal go so! I suspect the islamist in him must have desired 70 virgins and coming from Trikidad, the scarcity of virgins is very well known. I don’t know what Fazeer’s views on women are but I want to advise him to stay far from our women while he is on island.

Gone are the days when Trikidadians believed in their own superiority complex and thought that oil would make them permanently comfortable. Fazeer have managed to demonstrate that he is a clown of the highest order and we can do without those characters. Faazer would do well to take his wish for 70 virgins elsewhere, maybe in Trickydad, where they seem to have lost all virtue and virginity is so passe.

We know the challenge that he faces earning his bread as his own coalition seem to have had enough of his vile rantings and fired him. Poor boy, I guess we need to go easy on him, is not the poor boy fault since Kamala fired him for his anti women comments.

Fazeer, your obvious depth on the surface did a good job of exposing how shallow you really are inside. Shane should not be your low hanging fruit to pick on. I pity the people who depend on you for any kind of insightful commentary. Boss, you need to take a hike in one of our virgin forests and keep walking until your soul is cleansed.

I have no doubt that your talent gene pool ended with you stuck in the running your mouth area. The obvious lack of talent outside of running your mouth is legendary, so while Shane will be taking wickets and doing something that calls fro real talent, you sure will keep running your mouth. Only thing is they can get those like you ‘a dime a dozen’.

I would like to invite you to come clean with what really ails you, Shane can teach you a thing or two about wood if you would allow him to. No, not in the way I expect your sick lil mind to operate but if you man enough to apologize for seeking to make our Shane your target practice, they we may forgive you, if not, we not responsible for what practice they take with you. You are now dismissed.

I congratulate shane on his performance. However Dominicans should not get excited. Zimbabwe is the weakest team in the world and Zimbabwe is way below below standard. The windward islands team would beat Zimbabwe any day.Against Australia the wicket assisted spin bowlers, but to know how good shane is he got to perform all over world especially against sub continent teams. If he does this against world class teams then I would rate him as world class but not right now.

I Like it when it suits me, I hate it when it does not, other times I am not sure. I respect all point of views, but can we please stay away from the insults. We tend react too much instead of embracing the opportunity to share of views regardless of the side we take, let us do it with respect. Ronald, while reading this article I could pretty much feel the struggle you might have experience seeking that fine balance to please everyone. Great writers apart from writing great pieces, the fact that they are not bothered by criticism, they are on your way to great things. Right now, that is my wish for you.

Great Article, but I would dare say that we have had our fair share of people who have done great things in sports, re: cricket and track and field to name a few of those sports. Some of those people are never recognize and even Dominicans themselves will not give Jack his Jacket. We have a culture of non-support for our sports, I guess except for cricket only recently.

Dominican selectors themselves use to leave the best players/athletes down because they were from the north, so when it happens at the regional/international level, we cry foul. Shane is a brilliant athlete and let us hope that we support him fully.

As far as Dominica not having the Lara, Usian or Kirani, we had many of those in the making, but they were never supported by our Govt, associations and sometimes our people. Check the Stats.

    Go Shane!!!

very well written piece Mr. Smith. This is an opinionated article and i don’t think it is the intention of the writer for everyone to agree with him but instead to challenge us to analyze this article and feel free to express our own opinion.

Keep on writing Ronald this is a breath of fresh air. You are an example to our many professionals who choose to sit quietly and not make any meaningful contribution to the education of our society.

  7. March 24, 2013

I beg to differ with you Smithie; F. Mphammed’s piece was no satire. When a writer, nor so a Trinidadian, talks about Shane and Veerasamul ( don’t know if I Spelled the name correctly), having been chosen while Narine is omitted, that’s not satire. He’s dead serious.

Formerly Shell & Texaco based in Trinidad sponsored West Indies cricket;__ Trinidad is still the biggest financial contributor to West Indies Cricket__ and the West Indies’ selectors were compelled to include Joey Carew on the team, although he was a disappointment on the two privious tours and disrespectful to skipper Worrell.Trinidadians feel that their petro-dollars give them preeminence to us.

So Smithie just take back. Don’t let anyone, give you a six for a nine. I venture to go on a limb and say, had Keleb Laurant been from Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica or Guyana, he would have played dozens of Test matches, because he is one of the greatest bowlers of all time.

Ronald, you cannot justifiably accuse Dominicans of being overprotective of Shane and all you can come up with is “what if’s.The fact of the matter is that Shane was left off the team for nn good reason after a supeb performance against Australia, the best cricket team in the world at that time.Do better than that even if you are trying to be objective.
That editor from Trinidad does not deserve to be defended by for what he wrote in calling Shane a chucker when he has corrected his action. The Trinidadian is living in the past with his vitriol.

Shane i do not know you personally, but if i did i would reward you with advise, advise, advise, advise! Making you understand that to be a top class spinner at the international level, you must come up with numerous top class performances like this one, including performances which can take you team from the jaws of defeat to the joy victory. This makes bowlers GREAT! You can be there.
My greatest fear is that i don’t know how you are recieving all the praises that’s being showered upon you!. By no means can you afford to be complacent, because others are waiting. Keep on training hard, try to master your destructive deliveries, keep a cool head, there are do’s and dont’s that a sports person should be aware of.
You are not yet a Murali,or Ajmal,or Herath,or Ashwin,or Swann,or Warne, or Gibbs,or Kumble, etc etc. (I have leg spinners there). If you select any of these men as your CRICKETING BOWLER ROLE MODEL, you will go very far.
I listened to the commentry and some of the commentators were asking for you to flight the ball more? Maybe just maybe you can practice this and know when to use it.
Be humble, train hard, be willing to accept constructive criticisms, don’t be arrogant.

Very interesting article and i am in agreement with most of it except a few lines in the introductory paragraph ” We have nothing compared to what Brian Lara gave to Trinidad, Viv Richards to Antigua, Usain Bolt to Jamaica, or Kirani James to Grenada”.
I think we have just as much great talent as our neighours and competitors. The problem we have in Dominica is that we pick and choose who we want to push just like the west indies selectors and so a lot of our better players or talented individuals are sidelined (overlooked be it for not having the correct surname or whatever the reasons)and so they are never pictured in the eyes of the selectors. Jamaica has an organized sports program from preschool and so they must do better than us when our athletes representatives here have to struggle(literally beg the public on Matt in the morning for funds) to find their way to the Carifta games on DOMINICA’s behalf . The powers that be are not really interested in sports if you ask me . Look at our sporting facilities or the lack off and tell me if we are really ready to harness and develop our natural sporting talents on Island.

This may not solve the issue, as i mentioned in my blogg. One could take more wickets than the other in ONE MATCH but this is not enough. You would have to play them over a period of 5 or more matches, then maybe you will be able to compare.

    • Justice and Truth
      March 24, 2013

      “Wonder.”
Excellent question and good sense of humor. You made me laugh. I do not think that they have any friendship or anything in common. They are opponents, who will be chosen over whom and who will perform the best – to compete. If they played together they will be sociable towards each other.
It is as people working together and doing their utmost to show the boss they are better than another so as to be in his good books and receive a good salary raise and promotion. Competition exists in the work force. Generally those who compete against others are not bosom friends with one trying to outdo the other, sometimes snitching on the other. They just have to try to get along in that atmosphere. This is as far as it goes.
Shane should not bother about being friends with Narine and especially what Fazeer stated. Who knows what Narine stated about Shane? Should they play together, if I were Shane, I would just be on my P’s and Q’s with Narine and play a game of pretense.

I have been away from Cricket for so long, that I was a bit uncomfortable to post a comment here in regards to the games that was played at the Windsor Park.

However I know that my daddy is a lover of Cricket, his friends called him Sobers, because he was so good at playing Dominoes against them.

And so I know that he is proud of Shane Shillingford right no; I take this opportunity to speak on his behalf, for Shane and his awesome contribution to the win of the West Indies Cricket Team, against their opponents.

Thanks to you Shane for making my daddy, my two brothers, and the rest of us Dominican’s, who love Cricket, a proud and happy people this week.

Don’t forget my friend, that it was your virtue of humility, the confidence and trust in your ability to succeed, which has brought you this far; do not forget that this is the way God has blessed you–make sure to give Him thanks and gratitude, which He deserves.

Continue in your ways, young man, and allow your ability to cause you to rise to fame–I know that you deserve it, but most of all to God be the glory, for without Him with you, you can do nothing. Blessings!

Yes I agree with you on all points especially in Shane not having been choosen for the Australian tour yet may I add that this helped Shane much more than the West Indies Cricket Board will ever admit. It’t rather unfortunate that have to start your sports column inspired by some sort of subtly veiled jealousy over Shane’s achievements. Going so far as to imply that Zimbabwe is hardly any team of worth.

Fazeer is more than competent to defend himself, there’s no need for any uncle tomism. Furthermore what fazeer said can’t be taken in isolation. There have been a well documented bias by the so called “big islands” against “small island participations in West Indies cricket. This well document afront have been going on over 40 years, basically from the innception of the West Indies team.

To come now and jump on the victims instead of the perpetrator/s of this immoral attitude speaks of a revolting condition of self contempt from this columnist as well as a seizure of the notorious stockholm syndrome.

Get some self-respect man! where is your sense of national pride? The sad thing is that the very people you are trying to defend would never exhibit this trecherous behavion in their ‘big island’ homeland without serious rebuke from their compatriots.

Its cadaverous attitudes like yours that allows small island players to get consistently sidelined, since the selectors know that they can depend on cowardly folks like you to shamelessly influence the masses into pasivity.

Realist, I gave you thumbs up for that. I would not praise anyone of them against Shane.
Although his article is well-written, if I were he, I would not mention Narine and the likes and Zimbabwe. This is the time to give Shane all the praises, congratulations and appreciation. He certainly did well.
I hope his future articles will outline all what occurred on the field as Shane led the team to victory. Thanks to Shane and good luck to him!
While I am at it, last week someone telephoned me and told me that a longtime friend (of mine) passed away in his home while viewing the Match in B/dos. I was informed that he was looking forward to Shane’s return. Obviously, being an avid cricket fan and one who played cricket since school days to high school and thereafter, he loved cricket. He would have been at the Stadium last week cheering on the W.I. team and Shane.
When I read on DNO of Shane’s excellence and that the Match was taking place in Roseau and ended, I could not help but think of him and feel saddened that he was no longer here and to offer Shane his congratulations and to be an onlooker at the Match.
Surprisingly, although he is a well-known person, I did not see the obituary on DNO. From above he must have been happily viewing the Match and saying, “Go on Shane!” :) Also that he was happy Shane came out with flying colors :) I hope God allowed him that glimpse. :)
God had better plans for him. I will say, may his soul rest in peace. Amen!

Good article indeed.I still believe Shillingford has a lot of hard work to do, because i am reading the commentaries from other Caribbean islands and although he has done admirably, these people are still calling for Miller, Narine,Permaul, Benn, Brown, etc…The politics and the insularity will never go away. It is good that we presently have a plethora of spinners, because it will inevitabley have all of them to bring up their performance rate, but for a man to do so well,it’s pathetic that some people are still calling for his head.
They also want to see how he performs on tour, after such a fine performance at home. This is my wish also.Hewever i am confident that he can do it. I maintain if he does it against Australia, he can do it against the others.
With regards to Narine, i still believe that Narine will be a good test cricket spin bowler, but now it’s Shillingford who is the one of choice. He is the best we have presently, and i don’t say this to berate Narine’s ability…In fact a blogger on (cricinfo) is asking for the two to operate in tandem, to bring the curtains down on this Narine/Shillingford debate…Even that is not enough in my view.!!!
Finally Shillingford must not listen to anyone who would like to make him believe that his position on the team is sealed. This is just the beginning, our SELECTORS can do very strange things indeed, and with all the talk in the region, if Shillingford just fails once,” we gonna hear them”…
Anyway with 10 matches and 48 wickets…Breaking records in between, THIS IS INDEED A PROUD MOMENT FOR DOMINICA!!!!

Dominicans didnot misinterprete Frazeer’s acticle. He called Shane a pelter, before the whole cricketing world in an effort to criticise Shane and by extension the W.I selectors for including him on the team. Why in the same acticle he didnot mention that Narine was once called for pelting. It is a habit of those cricketing big wigs to try their best to keep the so called small islanders for representing the W.I. We cannot forget when Keleb, RIP., was in his prime he was called for pelting. Presently,is Mr. Smith aware of the pressure that is being put on Sammy and Mr. Julian Hunt by those so called big cricketing islands. Shane proved Fazeer to be wrong, when he wrote that is was because a test match was to be played in Dominica that is why Shane was considered.Mr. Smith is right when he wrote that like a mother hen we are prepared to protect Shane,if we dont, does he expect the Bajans, Trinis,Guyanese and the Ja people to protect him.

Fazir’s article was 100% in support of Shane. So what if he called him a pelter? Shane was banned from bowling until he fixed it. He gave the perspective of the Trini man on the street. Like Smith said, get the emotion out of the interpretation. I even thought that Fazir’s article was poorly written and the intent at satire was too obvious.

    SMITH

It was the great Da-ite Pat aaron who once said ” We are becoming victims of our own intelligence ”

I wander how is it that an individual who offers himself up as a journalist of some acclaim can justify the selection of SHANE SHILLLIGHFORD as a WEST INDIAN TEST PLAYER by referring to the player as a PELTER, JOKER ? MR SMITH bright you bright please explain this obvious contradiction .

I even believe that the Mohammad article could well be full term pregnant with all the potentialities of a libel suit in defamation. The good name and reputation and social standing of Shane Shillingford was brought into serious repute by referring the imporation of derogatory terms such as pelting ( an obvious attempt at violating the rules of cricket ) and joker ( making fun of the individual ) These are amongst the effects.

    SMITH PLEASE RESPOND ?????

Its is rather unfortunate but remarkable when Mr Smith made reference to the illusion that the sentiments echoed by FAZEER were misinterpreted. This is regrettable. You Smith have obvious been distracted by the mastery of the author Mohammed. He deliberately hid behind the Satire of language to launch a most brutal attack of our Sporting Sovereign Hon Excellency Sir Shane “Spine Maestro ” Shillingford.

Fazeer is no fool. His “TIM TIM ” strategy was very well conceived and properly implemented unto the mindset of a gullible reader. But the majority of Commonwealthians of Waitukubuli extraction were rightfully incensed over this dangerous article. Yet you speak of ” misinterpretation”. I say politely that this is a rather moronic response and evaluation of the work of an obviously injured TNT-Fanatic who went through some psychotic trance after SHANE was selected for the just concluded Zimbabwe Test series.

Its shameful that some of us attempt to SUGAR COAT the PU=PU that was written by Port of Spain which was in deep pain after our KING SPIN got the nud !!!!! We must not be apologetic or play WES=PAY E-MERE with those so called commentators who hide behind their microphone to push their BIG ISLAND INTERESTS. Some of them have no interests and respect for the so called ” smaller islands” and they push their sword of insularity down our throats for years now and its time that we stand up against them, if and when the need arises.

So Mister Smith that’s a bad start. Your failing attempt at pushing under the carpet the utterances of the Mohammed did not go un-noticed. We expect better than this. Every noted Cricket Expert in Dominica for example Reginald St Havis Shillingford ( a noted master exponent of the English language ), Mr Darwin Telemacque and English Language Specialist at UWI and DSC ( all of whom are very versed in West Indian Cricket History ) have condemned this article and seen through it.

Let me state for the records my disagreement with your conclusion on this FAZEER/SHANE matter. However I look forward to your other articles and wish your good self and DNO all the best and support this iniative. I do hope that other knowledgeable Sports Journalist like Havis etc be given an opportunity to share their vast expertise with the reading public.

Admin: You might have noticed that in the editor’s note we said that Mr. Smith will be contributing to this column every other week which means that there are at least two opportunities available each month for other capable sports analysts/commentators to contribute if they so desire. We would be delighted to hear from them.

I think you should take back that statement with regards to Frazer, he was out of place, no satire. You sound as if you are still sceptical of Shane, forget the doubts in your mind because Shane is well cemented on the West Indies side whether they like it or not.
