The Waitukubuli National trail is taking the spotlight again as a non-profit organization seeks to heighten its use by locals and eventually attract more international attention.
The Inaugural Waitukubuli Trail Cross, as it is called, is a race that will kick off from 8.30 am on Saturday 1st June at the beginning of Segment 4 at Trafalgar, and end at the Trail Headquarters in Pond Case with an award ceremony and get together.
“It is one way of promoting the trail, increase visitors to Dominica, and getting more local people involved in using the trail and understanding the value and appreciating it,” Director of the Nature Island Environment Trust, Betty Perry-Fingal, said .
The Nature Island Environment Trust is the main organizer of the event.
Perry-Fingal said the objective is to attract local and international visitors to the trail and Dominica.
She noted that her organization has been brainstorming ways of promoting the trail and the race was one of the ideas that came up.
“So the idea was to find ways to promote the trail and we came to the realization that trail running has become a major sport worldwide,” she stated. “So we said one of the things we could do is to try to start organizing some trail races …. so the idea was to start small with a local race and eventually build it up to a regional and then international level.”
Terry-Fingal said about 20 participants have so far registered for the event and she said registration is still open at $25.
Prizes will be given to the team with the best time and also the individual with the best time.
Volunteers from the Fire Service and Cadet Corps will also be in attendance.
