STAY WELL & SPARKLE – Unstoppable Cadet Kasian

Kaisan
Kasian has not been daunted by loss of limb

It is not every day you meet someone like 14-year old Castle Bruce Cadet Kasian Ravaliere. Through this article, you will – and chances are you will find her to be of more than just passing interest.

Kasian lost her left leg when she was only two.  A concrete step collapsed, trapping her leg for over half an hour. Despite multiple operations, circulation was compromised by compartment syndrome resulting from the crush injury. Surgeons were forced to amputate.

Neither Post-traumatic stress nor phantom limb pain has deterred her. Upon admission to Castle Bruce Secondary School, Kasian eagerly joined the Cadet Corps. Aided by her artificial leg (prosthesis), she marched in last year’s Independence Day parade. However, she is in the midst of her teenage growth spurt and her prosthesis is now too small for her. Thanks to Dominican Gwen Ferdinand Jacobs teaching at University in Tennessee, a new one can be on its way at the heavily discounted, but still unaffordable price of $3,500.

Kaisan outgrew her prosthesis but not her zest

En route to visiting Kasian at school, I paid a courtesy call to the Castle Bruce Health Center. Dr. Wade, her nurses and staff have treated Kasian and have nothing but good to say about this young lady. Kasian is a promising student. She loves math and literature.

She wants to be a soldier, but if that doesn’t work out she wouldn’t mind being a judge. Nice fall-back plan, don’t you think? Frankly, based on her track record, I am confident Kasian can accomplish just about anything she sets her mind to. But she has significant challenges to overcome.

Children can be cruel. No, not evil; they just find it fun to call each other names. No doubt you had one or two nicknames yourself. Some stick to the extent that many new acquaintances may not even know the person’s real name. For example, I went to school with a gentleman a.k.a ‘Bottom-brain’ – but that’s another story!…

So, her classmates call her ‘Jep-jep’ or ‘Pwichet’ (grasshopper) because she has to hop about. They laugh at the armpit stains caused by her crutches.  Some won’t to sit next to her because of the inconvenience of having these assistive devices in their way. But Kasian takes it all in stride. Not one to be sidelined, she is full of energy and always on the move.

Kasian was offered the post of Quartermaster. That is a sort of desk job in uniformed forces for the person assigned to stocking and distributing supplies.  She declined. According to Senior Adult Under-Officer Keturah Alfred, Kasian would rather get right into the thick of things with all the sports. She tumbles into the river with the rest of the students. Ms. Alfred wishes she had more active adult support to assist in the supervising the several activities. Graduated cadets have been helpful, but then they move on.

School principal, Octavia Alfred is a strong supporter of the Cadet Corps. From her privileged position, she has clearly seen the distinct discipline and leadership the Cadet principles instills in her students. She sees the biggest problem now as transportation for the students who stay after school to participate in Cadet activities. Some live as far as Petite Savanne and La Plaine and it all falls on Officer Alfred to get them home.

Kasian’s mother Leah Mingo gave permission for this article. As you can see, she is so proud of her daughter and was present throughout providing intriguing details on Kasian’s journey. Well, there’s more. On my way back to town I offered Ms. Mingo a ride and gave a hand carrying her baby’s pram.

I was shocked to discover that the family lived in such a remote, inhospitable location. From the road we crossed a ravine and literally climbed about 75 yards up a steep, narrow, winding, rocky, slippery path. We had to stop to rest a few times. My heart was constantly in my mouth for Ms. Mingo, ‘gwo budeh’ and all, wearing pushins, with a sleeping baby in her arms. The treacherous track leading to Cdt. Ravaliere’s humble dirt floor home.

As a cadet, I have clawed my way to the top of Morne Diablotin and have descended into the foreboding Valley of Desolation. I accepted the small risk of breaking a leg as part of the price to pay for the adventure. But why on earth does it have to be a daily adventure for an amputee student on – crutches – to risk this hazardous trek back and forth to school!?

How did they end up living in that God-forsaken spot in the first place? Well, according to Ms. Mingo, they had to flee the family homestead as a result of violent inheritance dispute. Numerous cries for relief from the terror have allegedly gone unheeded. In any event, this is only one side of the story. Such matters are usually complicated and well beyond the scope of my visit. Suffice it to say, a tiny dirt-floor hut, wrapped in black plastic, clearly is no place for Kasian and her vulnerable family to be living. No. Not in Dominica.

Major Dorsen Robin and Sr. Officer Bonti Liverpool were the first to cross the island to encourage ongoing local efforts on her behalf. This is reflective of the commitment of the entire leadership of the Corps for the well-being of every single cadet. Commandant David Andrew declares the “Cadet Ravaliere commitment brings high honour to the Cadet Corps. We are very proud of her achievements. This highlights the principle that disability is not equivalent to inability. I have authorized the Cadet Fund-Raising Account to receive donations to assist with expenses related to Ms. Ravaliere’s prosthesis and for any other cadet with special needs.”

Look down. Chances are you see two legs. And think of all the wonderful places they have taken you! How about we pause for a moment and whisper a quick prayer of thanks and praise for this blessing? Oh well, some of us may have a touch of arthritis or varicose veins; perhaps a little edema or poor circulation. But consider this poor child with one leg doing twice as much as many of her peers do with two. The indomitable spirit of youth like Cadet Ravaliere speaks volumes for the future and security of our nation Indeed, she is most deserving of our support.

Are you part of a church/organization with a mission to serve the less fortunate? Are you associated with a corporation or know someone who is doing well and looking for cost-effective ways to give back? Even you cannot give now; just a word of encouragement would go a mighty long way. Every response will be courteously acknowledged.

By the grace of God Cadet Kasian has gotten this far. With her infectious smile, she is irrepressible, sure! Unstoppable? Not quite. Without a new prosthesis, she’ll be down for the count. Chances are you may have something to say about that!

It is a wonderful idea to let the world know of this young Cadet. In this day and age no one should be living in that condition however, we can see that her family really definitely needs help so we should all chip in. It is a wonderful opportunity to give. If there is an account number money can be deposited.

I am thankful for all those who have pledged their support for Kasian. Could a community leader confirm that housing story? I hope the mother reported the threats to the police because her situation places her and the children at a greater risk of being attacked if someone plans to do so.
Either way, I fear for the children’s safety at this time. The uncle &/ mom may need some real mental health evaluation and Kasian and her siblings should not be allowed to continue to reside in the area and under the described circumstances.
No child should have to endure that kind of abuse/neglect. It is time for the government to step in. and help Kasian and her siblings.
Where are the children’s father(s) min all this?.
God’s richest blessings on al of you.

This is Kasian little Miss Sparkle. Thanks to all those who has been showing concern to my family and I. I want to thank in a special way all those who has helped me in the past and who continue to help me during my disability moment.
Thanks to Mrs. Gwen Ferdinand Jacob, Dominican living in Tenessee and Mr. Scott Moore who made it possible for me to have a leg in the previous years. Through walking to school and home, playing and being involved in sports this leg wore off. hats off the the Primary schools on the entire East too…
Thanks to Dr Christian and the Cadets of Dominica, the Principal and Staff of the Castle Bruce Secondary School and Dr. Cooles and his wife for faxing the information to Mr. Moore.
Presently, I am again pleading to the public to help me and my family with whom I am really happy to just hlp us with a little shelter over our heads. We are not asking for too much but we believe that as a people who belive in the Almighty Father, that we will overcome all these trying times one day. I am disappointed in hearing some people say that is money we want, we all know that everyone nedds money to survive, this is not a crime, however, our sole intention was to be happy and be in a place where we can achieve this happiness. My mum is a hard working woman, doing so from the time she was a young girl and she still continues to till the soil. I pray that the Heavenly Father will intercede for us as we journey together in helping keep my family together in love, joy, peace and happiness. i am an outgoing individual, I love life and is tired of seeing mum cry and call on the Father to help us. God bless you all, and as my principal mrs. Alfred always says God loves you and I love you too…..
Thanks to Scott again for making my dream of moving freely on both legs become a reality and thanks to the persons who are making it possible to clear it from customs. God Bless!!!
    Kasian.

I have read all the comments and thanks to all those who did express their words of support and encouragement. Children are the joy of a mother’s life. I love every one of them and they do love me too. If we were to plan our future we would all find the most appropriate life for our families. I am in this situation due to certain situations which i have explained numerous times. My life at this time is even happier in the garden with my children than where my father left me, but due to the negative vibes that surround me and keep surrounding me for years, I just honestly believe that my children needs a home where they are kept safe from violent outbursts and inappropriate behaviours.
I am only seeking to secure my children and i in a comfortable place, peaceful and happy. I am being threatened by the authorities that my children will be taken away if I do not go back to the home where our lives are at risk, rather than helping me to get out of the situation. Can welfare protect me and my children from my brothers who threaten to kill me on numerous occasions whenever we r in any dispute? I love my brothers, I once took care of them of when my mother died and my father travelled overseas. Today I am the worst sister that ever lived. I am fed up with this and just needs to be free from all this pain and suffering. I pray that the good Lord will see me through this situation. Once again thanks to all….. even to those who commented negatively, I stiull do ot wish for anyone or any human being to go through such a horrible life. For it is only when you are in the kitchen that you will feel the heat! or only when you walk a mile in my shoes you will know what i am going through.

For all those who suggest that the Government should intervene here, especially the UWP supporters, I certainly agree with you and believe you and me they will. But just for your information, do you know that alot of the people who visits the Red Clinic are in similar situations and sometimes even worse? Do you know that the Yes We Care program provided for definitely worse conditions than this?.. My people it is true, The PM and the Government are assisting lots of people in similar and worse conditions, unfortunately, they can’t know of every such situation all at once. I applaud Dr. Christian for this article, it also brings to light the purpose and importance of The Red Clinic and the Yes We Care Program. These are the sort of people and situations that those programs are there to assist, also medical emergencies in the case of The Red Clinic. So I’m pleased to hear the UWP supporters calling on the PM and the Government to assist in that case and they should assist. What would be good, however, is for Dr. Christian to review the situation after the family has been assisted, or to even be pro-active, an article should be done on someone/Family who was in a similar situation who the Government’s Social Programs has assisted and compare and contrast.. All in all Doc, it was a good article.

Thank you DNO for bringing these type of stories/situations to the fore. While some are on the media giving the picture that Dominica is a land of milk and honey, there are people living the life of cavemen in our land.

We must always remember that there are two sides to a story. I applaud the effort of the young daughter and every day say I wish I had the means to remove her from her present situation. However I think that DNO should have done some more research within the community. The young prosmising daughter needs help but I think that the mother needs psychological help. I am well aware that Child Fund Formerly CCF has provided this young lady with a beautiful two bed room home in the community of Tranto her family has been supportive of she and her children but she doesn’t want them to assist. The latest thing I know is that the two daughters were at home and her brothers feed them and she was mad and cursed and said so many things to them right in front of the children. It begs me to wonder what type of welfare assistance is provided to your families. Yes she receives a family allowance from the division but I do not think this is enough and she too has to come to the realization that she has to humble herself and do what’s best for the two girls and one boy and the one in her stomach on the way. Sad this thing hurts me.

My congratulations to the young lady, and I am glad she lets nothing gets in her way, but come on people, that housing thing is such a blatant lie. I have seen men make their houses with only their Douglass, no carpenter tools. Shingles, flooring etc, who you fooling?

The mother of kasian does own a home which was donated to her, she also receives monthly assistance from the government. I think that the police and the people from the lands and survey department should address the situation and give the lady a road to her home, so that the dispute between her and her brothers and stop. Leah is a very hard working lady and it is very disturbing that she should have to resort to that, as her present living conditions. this is not healthy. Kasian is a teenager and a girl at that. she needs a her own space and privacy. I hope the appropriate authorities deal with this situation quickly.

I think that we need to stop being political about every thing that happens here in Dominica. The mother of Kasian does own a home, however there is a dispute between the her mother Leah and brothers with whom her land is bounding. I think the real solution is to have the police and the people from lands and survey intervene in this situation. it is very ridiculous that the lady has to abandon her home and go live in some bushes because she is threatened by her brothers. find somewhere give the lady a road to her home. Ms Mingo is also a recipient of the monthly public assistance given by the government, the house was also donated to her through Good News under the supervision of the hon. Johnson Drigo so no she doesn’t have to dress in blazing red to get help. she is already getting assistance.

They not poor yet. If de mother can have weave in her hair, she not poor yet. Because I know of plenty women working in the public service that had to go natural because they couldn’t even afford to perm their hair, far more to put weave.

I’m not saying the details about Kasian is not real. I believe it is. But I’m skeptical about that plastic house being the home. And from other bloggers who seem to know the story behind the story, it seems Ms. Leah Mingo (the mother) has some ulterior motive for showing Dr. Sam a plastic house to be her home.

Children are a gift from God and one in need is just as important as one who has everything one can ask for. This story brought tears to my eyes because I am a mother of two girls and fortunately for me my first daughter was adopted at age 1 and now she thrives at 8 because she has the love of her adoptive dad and me her mother. Kasian you are an inspiration and I will give what I can to this cause.

Sorry but something definitely is not right here. This lady got a teenager, an infant and a baby on the way living in this shed. Come on people let’s not be fooled here. A more thorough investigation definitely needs to be conducted. This shed appears no more than a little shed that was built in a far away garden for basic purposes such as collecting water etc. From the appearance of the lady the child being well attired for school and her Cadet purposes, where from this shed can a bed be set up, where does she cook a meal for her family is it in this shed with the plastic surrounding the shed. Hell no!!!! If it was a dilapidated structure be it wood or concrete I would not care if she had ten other buildings and using the dilapidated structure to tell otherwise my heart would go out to her. But this no way. My lady come better than that. Would be willing to help such a situation if the conditions surrounding this story made sense.

There must be some other form of accommodation where this lady and her family rest her head. Is it true that she really have a two bedroom concrete wooden house? This needs to be investigated further. Aint anyone putting any bull in my head!

Well, I read an article where Hon. Reginald Austrie was blasting the Parl. Rep. for Salisbury because he did not attent the signing of a water contract. Mr. honorable minister for housing, while you were busy giving maypwee, you did not see that your colleague Hon. Johnson Drigo missed the boat completely? While you were giving houses to supporters who did not need and some who have, you did not see one to give to this woman? This is what happens when we spend too much time looking in the distance. Take care of your backyard before you see what is in your neighbour yard.

For once, make a proper decision based on need and not for want of votes.

Although showing the humble home has garnered much support and sympathy, I am not sure this was not the desired expectation in the first place. Helping the child is very important, but would peer pressure be a problem for her in her school?

  25. Simply the Truth
    March 30, 2014

She is a brave, strong and ambitious young lady. Given the opportunity and her determination she will go places and accomplish her goal. I am moved by her strength, endurance and determination.
As a start, on a primary local standpoint of her family’s plight including her situation, this should be immediately brought to the attention of the PM and the MP in the riding where they reside. I hope this was done. These authorities should not hesitate to assist this young lady student and her family.
Surely, they should not be living under such conditions, in addition to residing in a remote area and noting that she is an amputee. They are in dire need of immediate help. Here is a family whom the goverment should not hesitate to immediately assist and to ensure that they reside in an appropriate accommodation and under likewise environment. I am certain her mother is not asking for too much.
Dominican residents who are able to financially assist should also do their utmost to assist them. You know the saying, two heads are better than one. More people who help the more they could be helped. A collection of a few dollars from one person could amount to a few thousand dollars collectively.
I am wondering if the Ontario Dominica Association is aware of her plight. I will forward a copy in addition to speaking to the authorized person stating that all D/cans in Ontario should get together and assist her in whatever manner they (we) possibly could. Collectively, we could do more.
Dominican Associations in the US, Great Britain and elsewhere could also do their utmost to assist.
DNO, from time to time, please keep your readers informed of this student’s progress. We are interested in her situation and would all be happy to know how she is also coping. Thank you for bringing it to the attention of Dominicans worldwide. We hope everyone will be able to contribute.
God bless this young lady, her mother and other members of her family.

I read that some of her schoolmates joke about the situation. Though that is expected I can’t help thinking of the students of the Newtown Primary, I have never met a more accepting body. They just make all feel welcome no matter what. Additionally, they will give you extra special attention and love in cases like these. I pray to God they never change this aspect. Thank you very much ! For once I would like for someone to post a non-political comment. I am proud of this young teen for her perseverance & determination. However, I believe that this mother also needs to take responsibility for her actions. Some things just don’t add up. It’s 2014 – 21st century ! You can’t fool people anymore. This tapolin looks new which would leave one to assume that she recently moved there. Also, she needs to be educated on birth control methods because quite clearly if these are my living conditions I surely won’t bring a third child into this kind of housing. Come on the mother has to do better !

In this day and age women has to make wise decisions when you visit the clinic for child care 6 weeks after the baby is born you are offered contraceptive methods. She has a small baby at the moment. We need to empower our women to make better reproductive choices. Because for the life of me I don’t get it because there are too many options.

This may be the question of everyone. However, be discreet and compassionate. The fact is she and her children are residing under sub-standard conditions.
The social service department should handle this situation; not you. I am confident that someone in authority will advise her accordingly and offer some concrete advice.
Children of all need a decent house to live in. Consider the situation of Kasian. She also needs a house in a different area to reside in so that she does not have to climb that area. Also think of her.
When people help others in need of with a generous and joyful attitude, it is pleasing to the Lord. In so doing. When we help, we say, “Lord, it is for the love of you and for neighbor that I help.” In so doing, God will bless them and their effort.
If she resided in Canada of all and telephoned the Social Assistance office for help, they would ensure that they reside in a relatively comfortable accommodation. Where children are involved, the government ensures this.
Those who serve her as the government’s employees will not interfere and pry into her personal business as long as she is a responsible mother and is taking proper care of her children.
If their plight is brought to the public’s attention, rest assured of the amount of help they will receive. Times as these are when we know how generous people could be.
As for you, if you are a child or an adult, hope you will never find yourself in such a situation or a similar one. Keep in mind, “There but for the grace of God go I.” Pray for fellow Dominicans and for your country.

    • Simply the Truth
      March 30, 2014

This is the way it is in a democratic world. There are some members of people’s family who live in luxury while others live in poverty. Those members could not care less.
There are those who are well-off to a certain extent and who are aware that others are in need of who will not help them. I suppose it usually depends on their being fortunate and the others unfortunate.
Few people are generous. Someone once told me ten percent of people are generous. I do not know how the person knows about this statistic. However, in our daily interactions with others, due to our experience, we will conclude that it is so. God is looking on and taking note.
Was it not stated on DNO that “they had to flee the family homestead because of violent inheritance dispute?”
I read the following on a Canadian Reader’s Digest edition with pictures: A young black boy, no doubt hungry and starving was looking up at a fat rich man eating. The man said to him: “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps as I did.” The boy replied: “He is assuming that I have a pair of bootstraps.” Well said! Excellent reply!
This reminds me of the story of Lazarus and the Rich Man as stated by Our Lord Jesus Christ, contained in the New Testament.
Whenever we have the opportunity to assist we should never hesitate to do so. In this case, it commences with the government.
The city counselor or MP for that area may not have been aware of their situation. Well, now they know. Let us see how much they will assist them.

Heartbreaking indeed, sad to see a case like this going unoticed in our little nation of 70 000 or so. How many more families are living in deplorable conditions such as this? I think our government in particular needs to look a little more closely to the ground , but in the mean time lets come together as a nation, political dofferences aside to assist this innocent child and her family .

I cannot believe this is happening in Dominica, there is monies being given to young able men and women in D/CA every month and those who are really in need of these monies is not part of this free money movement. i know many young people in the village where i am from who got house and receiving money every month and this needy child is living in this condition?

TO HER MOTHER==== What on earth is she doing with more kids? she doesn,t have a proper house, no proper access to her dwelling place. a baby on shoulder and one more on the way? what is her problem???? where is she going to house them?.

if the place that is shown in this article is really where she lives, how is she looking so well groomed? where is she keeping her cadet uniform and crutches? YES I KNOW SHE NEED HELP. but i do not believe this is the actual dwelling place. her mother hair look like it is well taken care of and and she looks well clean and groomed. can someone advice her mother to stop having more babies until she can care for those she already have.

Where is Skerrit’s social program he parading on GIS all day long?

These are the people that he should be helping instead of giving houses to people who have jobs, can buy jeeps and cars, or are working on cruise ships.

    • Simply the Truth

It is a typical example. There is a social welfare department in D/ca. The one who is responsible for paying visits to the village should have known about it and should get some assistance for them.
In Canada, no matter how poor people are, no matter how many children they have, once the welfare department is aware of it, these people would receive help, some sort of accommodation, food and clothing. Generally people do not go hungry in this country unless they want to go hungry. Then there are also charitable organizations as Salvation Army and others who will help them if they are aware of their plight.
Something must be done in D/ca to ensure that people do not live under those conditions and especially with children.

I am not expecting a full blown concrete unit. but even something made from local materials that would be in a better condition that is presently available to them. there are units on the island that are made of recycled pallets, coconut stumps, recycled galvanized sheeting etc. these are things that are thrown away by others that can be used as a stepping stone to help this family. it will not be a permanent structure but it would be a lot better than a dirt floor unit.

An awesome young lady in that story and it is good to know that someone else is working to assist Kaisan.
I just want to mention here that gratitude goes a long way. It would have been nice if mention was made of those who assisted her in the past. This article says nothing about the efforts that were made to help this child and makes me wonder about the sincerity of the mother. I believe that some appreciation should be shown to those who selflessly worked hard to provide for that prosthesis that is now “too small”. Some communication with its donors might have had a different outcome as the special prosthesis has provision to be extended as the child grows and really should not be too small. God bless this child and help her to achieve all she be. No one, including family members should exploit this child’s circumstances.

I know Kasian, and can vouch for her amazing attitude, cheeky sense of humour and her intelligence. The first time I met her at the primary school, I stood up to offer her my chair, but she gave me such a look, I immediately realised my mistake!

Kasian could always be seen at the head of any school parade, carrying the banner and setting the walking pace (fast!) for the rest of the children. I admire her very much.

Anyway, words and prayers have not helped her and her family so far, and will not help Kasian get her new leg, and a decent roof over her head.

I don’t have much money, but of course I am going to donate. (the details are in this article). Additionally, I am going to post this on my Facebook site, and ask my friends to share this story. Perhaps someone, somewhere has a little spare cash they can give to me to pass on.
I know Kasian’s story moved Dr Christian, and I hope that we are kept posted of any developments.

For those of you judging her mother for having another baby, although I don’t approve, I do understand. Often, women will offer to have children for men on the promise that they will receive financial assistance both for the new child, and for their other children. Sometimes it works. Usually it doesn’t.

If any of the diaspora read this and need help getting money to Kasian, I will help. My email is [email protected] . I work as a volunteer with children in the village. My name is Sandra, and many people know me. Those who know me well will vouch for my honesty and integrity. I promise the money will reach and directly benefit Kasian.

Well written story and most ate facts especially relating to Kasian. She is in deed very determined. However as for the living conditions of the family this is a matter of CHOICE. Leah has a two bedroom house on a piece of land given to her by her father next to her two brothers. This house was built just a few years ago by ChildFund Caribbean East Federation and the Good News team. Kasian receives support from persons both in Dominica and the Disapora. This leg that she now has was donated through the efforts of a woman from Castle Bruce living in the Disapora. School supplies, monthly financial assistance etc the family benefits from. Instead of taking Dr. Christian to her garden she should have brought him to her actual home.

O God! Please show your mercy and compassion of Love to so many of us, human beings, who is so desperately weak. Help us to remember that by the Stripes of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we can be healed both physically and Spiritually.

It is extremely difficult to stomach this story of Kaisan, without wishing that there was something I could do. But I also understand that God has chosen His servants, through whom He will do all His various works of Life–wherever and for whomever.

This call for the deliverance of Kaisan is definitely not my call, in the physical form, at this moment–but with God, I also know that nothing is impossible and He does His work at His time; not ours. All I can do now is of the Spirit, this work is my spoken words through prayer and faith.

O God I prayer that You have not turned Your back on this weak young lady; whose name is Kaisan. I pray that she is on Your list for deliverance through one of Your chosen servant–whoever that servant is–let Your will be done O God our Lord!

I truly believe that You have spoken about Kaisan through Doctor Sam Christians; just as I believe You will accept my prayer, on her behalf for deliverance–there is nothing else that I can do at this moment but to pray, as You have commanded me to do so.

O God of mercy and compassion; look with pity upon us–I pray that faith in You from Kaisan will allow You to rich out and touch her, for all the deliverance that she needs right now.

Receive my prayer dear God, as I have said it in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Person in Love, who is also Your only begotten Son in the flesh. Amen!

This child is so full of hope, let us encourage her by providing her needs. This family’s living condition is inhumane. Dominicans, for the love of God and humanity, let us come together for the betterment of this family. One Love!

Lord have mercy. I cannot believe that my fellow citizens would ever be living in such conditions in 2014. This should never be happening in todays Dominica. Jamais pas.Mais pourquoi? Fellow Dominicans Let’s put aside our political, religious, and all other differences and do what we can to help this young lady and her family. They don’t need promises or negative talk. Action is what is needed. If everyone of us in the diaspora contribute just $1.00 (one dollar) we could help this aspiring young lady. Yes we can do it. If you are going to be negative please do not comment. Thanks for helping out.

Doc this is too much. This looks like a place you have in your garden to ge shelter from the rain and cook something to eat for the day. No. Not in Dominica. This is very strange to me and I thought I had it bad…to be a boarder at someone’s house in Roseau and later to take the bus to go to Roseau to CHS. I am crying for this family. I am praying for them. I know that help will come.

i cannot believe that this family is living in this state! forget the government, as a Nature Isle community we need to come together to help this case…(far fetched example) if everyone gave $1 the family would get $70,000! You guys need to provide bank account details especially for people overseas to be able to donate.

Shucking, just shucking; I am not shucked about the amputated leg, we see that everyday, people are born handicap also. I know that there are people living under primitive condition in Dominica, however I never anticipated that such living conditions exists in Dominica.

      This is scandalous!

What happened to the “Yes We Care” program that Gloria Shillingford bragged about earlier this week? How come no one in government saw the condition this lady and her children are living under, and make available to here one of the houses the government gives away to the party favorites. They give them to body abele people who have the means of helping themselves, the unfortunate like this poor lady falls through the crack and suffers.

The condition of the living accommodation, we are viewing here is a sub-human condition, and that is an indication that living conditions has deteriorated, to a point in Dominica worst than anything I have witness in all of our history.

It cannot get any worst: Living on a dirt floor in the twenty-first century is the worst to happen to a human being, they talk about government declaring war on pit hole toilet, what about revolutionizing living conditions for the population on a whole, what about getting into the building of affordable homes for people who cannot afford the million dollar houses as some of the politicians.

There are people in Dominica who will never be able to afford a house, and I believe it is the responsibility of the government to provide housing for these people. If we look around us we will find that lots of people have a bit of land; inherited, if they are unable to finance a home I believe government should assists these people by putting a roof over their head; those who can afford to pay pennies on a dollar should pay what they have, if they cannot pay we should count it as a lost, but people should be able to live in dignity!

Recall the Ambassador to the United Nations, and Venezuela, and wherever we have them posted, and use the money we spend on them to enjoy New York, and Caracas, and the cities in which they live at the expense of the poor as we see in this picture. This is a human family reduced to the level of; (I refuse to say what). Dr. Christian has brought this case out in the open, nevertheless there are other such cases in Dominica; Wesley as a matter of fact, and Gloria you know what I am talking about even if this lady and her children are in a worst off condition than the person’s in Wesley.

Hopefully, at least one of the persons in Wesley will survive, because efforts are been made to help her. It is a disgrace to see people lives as animals in places that cannot be considered a shack, we saw a man lives chained in what one may term a dog house in Portsmouth, then you all gallivant the country creating impression that life is so darn good in the country. Wake up and discover the damage you people have done to the country; the “Yes We Care” is working according to Gloria Dods Shillingford, may be for her party clones, friends of the insiders, but what about people like this lady that when it rains in the jungles around her plastic shed, and the water runs on the dirt floor; can you see the picture of one waking up in the dead of night to stand in a pool water.

Where is the conscience of the Government; I suppose she and her children will have to dress in fire red so that they can be seen as humans!

Sam you are a very special kind of man, everything works together for good for those who love the Lord, one way or the other you are serving a very good purpose in this life, you do not only see the high and mighty, but the poor and humble too!

I am responding to the many request for help for this amazing child and her mother.

I believe we can all make a difference in making sure in some small way we as citizens of the commonwealth of Dominica , assist in making a contribution , left forget about saying the government can help, government can only do so much .

Lets put a plan into action , for example ,i am willing to donate to this family 500.00 ec dollars , who is willing to match me or even donate 10.00.

I would like this Lady or the people in-charge of this story contact me directly to establish , how this family will receive this help.

      my contact number is 416 238 6565. my name is J L.

I am appealing to everyone to do the same if we make a serious commitment to donate at least 10.00 Canadian , us or other , we each will feel proud that we played a play in seeing some small change happen for this amazing young lady .

Please citizens , lets help this family out .

        March 30, 2014

i will donate, but not to you, “JL”, a private citizen–i don’t know if you’re trustworthy or not, and i’m not trying to fund your bank account.

if this campaign to help this young woman is to be successful, then we, the donators, need to be assured that the donations will reach her, that they’ll be applied to the purchase of a prosthesis and also to the builders for a new house. the mother also needs lessons on birth control and job skills so she can be self supportive and not depending on men who are obviously lying to her about being faithful fathers/husbands.

once this is made plain, then and only then will i give my money.
