Summer Camp participants receive some lessons in wind energy generation

Camp participants displaying their books on wind energy

Children who recently attended a three-week summer camp in Bellevue Chopin were introduced to the concept of wind energy.

US firm, Mortensen Construction, which specialises in building green for the future, presented some books on wind energy to the camp participants.

The presentation was part of a “Catch The Wind Program” which, as a component of a larger school outreach by the company, focusses on building wind turbines to catch and cultivate wind as a source of electricity for residential and commercial use.

Company officials say the presentation fit in quite appropriately with the theme of the summer camp – sustainability, allowing them to introduce the concept of wind energy in a way that camp participants were able to relate to. The children were exposed to some aspects of the process of wind-generated electricity, to include the size of the turbine, the amount of wind required, and the amount of energy that’s actually created.

Other presentations at the camp geared at promoting sustainability came from the Environment Coordinating Unit on  the environment, DomSetCo on the marine resources of whales and turtles and National Cooperative Credit Union on  finances.

Waitukubuli National Trail also presented on sustaining our natural flora and fauna while cultural enthusiast Ras Algy spoke on culture and  sports officer Abraham Brown on health.

The camp participants were also involved in various arts and craft projects as well as a number of sports activities.

The camp was organized by Mortensen Construction and the Dominica Child Development Project which was , represented by Ms. Georgette Henry.

What they should do now is to place the youth in groups, headed by an older person to create a wind turbine , it could be a weekend activity to see how creative our youths are. I believe it would be fun.

More people should do those kinds of positive things to help the children occupy themselves not only during vacation but on weekends too…………

That was a great move by Mrs Baron and the parents and all those who supported the cause. The children surely benefitted.
