Superintendent of Dominica State Prison highlights institution’s rehabilitation program during ministry walkthrough

Jeffrey Edmond

During a recent prison walkthrough led by the Ministry of National Security, Acting Superintendent of the Dominica State Prison, Jeffrey Edmond, highlighted the importance of ongoing rehabilitation programs within the Dominican prison system.

Edmond welcomed officials and stakeholders to the institution and pointed out that the prison environment extends beyond mere confinement to include opportunities for personal development and skill-building.

He went on to emphasize the role of rehabilitation activities.

“These programs play a fundamental role in promoting the rehabilitation and successful reintegration of inmates back into society, ultimately contributing to a safer community and reducing recidivism rates in our country.”

He detailed some of the programs offered, including candle making, soap making, and educational classes.

“We have at present a candle making and soap making module [that] offers a practical and creative outlet to learn new skills, fostering a sense of accomplishment and potential for future employment opportunities upon re-entry into society,” Edmond shared. “We have our English and Social Studies classes designed to enhance inmates’ educational backgrounds and equip them with essential knowledge and communication skills.”

He also highlighted literacy and drug prevention initiatives as vital components of rehabilitation efforts at the prison.

“Literacy skills are fundamental for inmates to access educational resources, employment opportunities, and engage meaningfully in society. Simultaneously, drug prevention programs aim to address substance abuse issues, promote healthy coping mechanisms, and reduce the likelihood of relapse post-release,” Edmond stated.

Expressing his pride in the dedication and progress demonstrated by inmates and staff in the prison’s rehabilitation program, Edmond added, “I firmly believe that continuing to prioritize rehabilitation activities, we are laying a foundation for a more inclusive and rehabilitative prison service.”

He expressed gratitude to the Minister of National Security, the Permanent Secretary, staff of the Ministry of National Security, and Magistrate Gloria Augustus for their supporting.

“Together, let us reaffirm our commitment to rehabilitation, education, and personal growth as essential pillars of the prison service philosophy,” Edmond urged.
