Tarreau section of West Coast Road Project at advanced stage

The newly excavated southern approach to Tarreau

Work on the Tarreau section of the West Coast Road project is at an advanced stage, according to Project Manager for China Railway 17 Bureau Group Co. Ltd. (CR17) Jing Hao.

Hao was speaking to members of the media as he and other officials from the company led the media on a tour of that section of the project. He made mention that after major excavation works, the southern approach to Tarreau has been made appreciably wider and less curvy than previous and that the 1.2 kilometer strip of road that runs alongside and beyond the village, towards Layou, is ready for the next stage of construction.

He said, “We have excavated the area and widened the road so there will not be as much curve as before making for a smoother transition. The transition curve of the road will be much safer for motorists. The excavation was very difficult for us and so as to not disrupt the traffic, we worked overtime, most of the time, during the evening. Also, the construction of the wall begins here and that spans 1,200 meters. For this area, it will be a newly constructed road. In some of the areas, we have back filled it and we are going do it in layers until we get to the desired level.”

In response to claims that the wall may not be structurally sound due to it not having been built flat and straight, Hao said that the wall had been built to the specifications given to the company by the design team and that it would be at the road level for its entire span.

I wish the wires and post could be removed and run underground for even more space and decrease the potential for damage during a system.

SPEED LIMITS SHOULD ALSO BE IMPLEMENTED, SAFER FOR ROAD USERS…BECAUSE WHEN EVER ACCIDENTS HAPPEN WE ALWAYS FINE SOME ONE TO BLAME OR POINT FINGERS AT….IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ONE BEHIND THE WHEELS ESPECIALLY, THE BUS DRIVERS WHO SEEM TO RUSH TO MAKE A QUICK $$$$$$$$ AND THEN SAY SORRY…..

SPEED LIMITS, AND ADVANCE WARNING IN DANGEROUS AREAS.

    WE CAN DO IT…
OUR SAFETY ARE IN OUR HANDS..

This is a major improvement from the old road way, especially that corner on the Sourthern approach. I like what I am seeing.

We the residents of Tarreau are suffering & getting sick from all that DUST. The road is not being watered on a regular basis and the inconsiderate motorist are driving ridiculously fast creating a greater health hazard. And what is wrong with you people! you all sound like you belong to a cult singing the no headed ministers song “thanking skerrit for even the air you breathe”. Wake up people it is the governments role to build infrastructure so we can see our tax dollars at work.

They should ask why they’ve repaved the new road so thin and why some places have already started to fall apart and needed to be re-patched.

I have sometimes “criticized” this administeration on certain issues and have communicated that clearly to “the powers that be”.

I wish however to make it ABONDANTLY clear that I highly commend the Roosevelt Skerrit lead administration for this MAJOR ROAD REHABILITATION PROJECT (call it whatever you want).

This was “needing to be done” decades ago and successive governments paid NO attention to such a very important aspect of our development for its many significant contributions to sustainable development.

I want to state categorically that I applaud the PM on this strategic move in recognizing and subscribing to the ONE CHINA principle and I DO TOO. The country has benefited emensely from this brilliant move.

Mr. Skerrit thank you so much and may the good Lord continue to bless you. Sometimes we criticize you but for alot of us it is because we love you and want to see you do things well that your legacy can remain.

Please note that there are MORE for you than against you, we just need you to remain focused, act maturely (on a consistent basis), love “your enemies and do GOOD to those who hate you and say ALL manner of evil against you. Do us one favor please, try not to validate (in words/actions) the accusations against you. If you know you are found wanting in any area, put your house in order that you SHALL NOT be disgraced. You are a good man and mean well, we know that you are not infallible and have made allowance for that, but be true to yourself and your people always and the good Lord shall see you through!

Thank God for you, this government and for CHINA!

have you checked the quality of work. The wall is no way close to what either edghill or P.W.C would provide. The top of this wall is not level and very UGLY. there are areas where the height of the wall is 8″ above the road and other areas it is 3′.Is that the quality of work that we accept. Is not because it is free money that they should give what they want. Also the southern section is much lower than the road level. I wonder whether they knew what they were doing. To speak about the road under canefield cliff. This road makes all road builders smile because it is TOOOO BUMPY. How can a road just newly surfaced be soooo bumpy?

  12. i can use my brain
    August 29, 2011

The Northern approach is just as important as the southern. Why arent we banking/shelving that cliff? stones and rocks will keep falling..no doubt. All that hoopla over 1 corner….the cliff needs to be shelved/benched like Red Gully on the Canefield/Pond casse road.
I will suggest something similar to be done under the canefield cliff as well……some method of soil stabilisation please….use your engineering brains at the Ministry of Public Works….Chief Engineer use some foresight and helps us nuh please.
We must realise that this west coast road will not be touched againg for at least 10-15 yrs or more. Lets do it now……lets not wait for de next level

  13. UNBELIEVABLE!!
    August 29, 2011

This is one of the best improvements I have seen. This corner gave us enough problems. Nice to see it expanded. The rest is up to drivers. Please be careful. It is a road not a racetrack.

    August 29, 2011

We cannot blame the road for a driver’s lack of commonsense and due caution. The width (improvement) of the corner should make for safer maneuvering around said corner and safer accommodation of 2 vehicles going in opposite directions entering the corner at the same time. Our drivers ought to drive responsibly and respect road safety rules at all times, regardless of the physical condition of the road.

Good work opening up that little corner and making that portion of the road a lot safer. That was long overdue.

I nticed that there are no comments on soemthing that will positively improve life in Dominica. Unlike our squabbling in promoting negative vybes. PM Skerrit. Well done. You are a true visionary. I am not worried anout the intelligence Unit since I do not have any intetntion in creating subversion (boots on the ground, following in the footsteps of the London criminals, agitating for a repeat of May 29, 1979)now or after the people of Dominica would have expelled the DLP.

  18. August 29, 2011

Don’t you find that corner is too wide when compared to the rest of the road? Lets just hope that drivers dont speed around this corner and end up taking un-intended sea baths. Just saying. Further I hope the chinese take their time to do a proper job and not the same poor construction as pointed out by Mr. Blackmoore, which led to his expressed concerns about the portion of the west coast road further north.

        AMEN!!!

      • August 30, 2011

I wasn’t the one who criticized the work by the chinese. Didn’t you hear Mr. Blackmoore on the same on DBS or maybe it is you are death. My only comment was that of the corner being wide and if you could read properly you would not have seen it as a criticism but a concern re the way our people sometimes drive on our roads. The sea bath thing was just a bit of humor idiot

it seems so because you are also seeing part of the old road and stop being so bias.
Look at something for what its worth for once!
