Taxi operators get certified

The upcoming tourist season is expected to take a turn for the better now that a number of taxi operators are equipped to provide better services to visiting guests.

Taxi operators from all over the island have received certificates for completing a training program conducted by the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and the Combine Taxi Inc. (CTI) aimed at offering quality service.

They were introduced to a wide variety of topics including conflict management, history of the Kalinagos, communications skills, current tourism issues, exercising proper record keeping, Dominica’s tourism product and customer service.

The main objective of the program, according to Margel Durand, Training Officer of the CTI was “to offer the many stakeholders, especially the taxi drivers and operators, the opportunity to improve their knowledge and delivery of a quality product and service to the many visitors to the Nature Isle.”

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism and Legal Affairs Claudia Bellot congratulated the participants of their achievements on behalf of the Ian Douglas, Minister of Tourism and Legal Affairs.

“It is your responsibility to ensure that your service is excellent, beyond expectation of the visitor and that you can provide a memorable, lasting and pleasant impression of the country,” she said.

She added that associations such as the CTI should ensure that there is compliance with the standards of the industry and that their members are self-regulated.

280 persons participated in the program which commenced on August 23rd, 2012 and continued every Thursday until September 27th. They had to participate in at least seven sessions in order to qualify for the certificate.

Well as good as this appears to be, guess what, the irony is, this is one of the reasons for the decline in cruise ship calls to Dominica. Too many taxi men offering independent tours, the cruise lines feel they are not making enough money through on board tour sales. Remember they are about making money, not coming here to boost our economy.
