Carlos Charles, the unity leader of Dominica’s youngest political movement, Team Unity Dominica (TUD) has strongly advised against any activity that could widen the fracture in the Kalinago community and Dominica by extension.
His comments came at the virtual press conference hosted by the party in which they endorsed the Prime Minister’s nomination for President, Mrs Slyvanie Burton. If successful, she will replace Charles Savarin, whose term is expected to come to an end on October 1, 2023.
Charles contends that fielding another Kalinago candidate against Mrs. Burton, who herself is from the Kalinago Territory, “would be a gross partisan political mistake.”
Nonetheless, just yesterday, Opposition Leader Jesma Paul-Victor nominated former Opposition Senator Anette Sanford, also from the Kalinago Territory, as her preferred candidate for Dominica’s presidency.
While TUD states that it understands and respects the Opposition’s adherence to the Constitutional process in presenting an alternative candidate, they stand firmly behind the Prime Minister’s nominee for several reasons.
“Mrs. Burton is eminently qualified for the position: she has served the Kalinago people and Dominica with appreciable acclaim. She would be our nation’s first woman President – this alone is worthy of an endorsement,” Charles asserted.
Furthermore, the TUD leader underscores that a majority of young Dominicans view her nomination favorably, and her selection introduces a fresh dynamic to the presidency. In Charles’ view, her indigenous Kalinago heritage allows the entire Kalinago community and the nation to celebrate a rare achievement. He believes that Mrs. Burton can distinguish herself in the role of President, emphasizing that the Head of State represents all citizens, not just the majority party.
He further states that the function of Head of State is a matter of all the people, and not the majority party as some may argue, therefore, they believe that there is a silver lining about the prospects and unfolding of the presidency which could be headed by Mrs. Burton, if she indeed becomes president.
Charles expresses optimism about the future of the presidency under Mrs. Burton’s leadership, stating that it is politically prudent to rally behind her rather than pursuing divisive political strategies. He believes that her ascendancy will be a significant boon to the Kalinago people and emphasizes the importance of unity on this issue. Charles asserts that the people of Dominica desire to see a sense of togetherness on important matters, making this a unifying cause.
He further emphasized that his party’s endorsement is not a compromise in any way shape or form, instead, it is a strategic, thoughtful, genuine, and deliberate gesture to show support for the Kalinago people, to celebrate women’s achievements, and to reach out and commend the Prime Minister for his decision to be bold and different with his
idea about the Presidency.
He stressed further that the endorsement serves as a commencement; a new start, a new era, a different journey, a twist in Dominica’s administrative fervor, and the party does not believe in opposing for opposing sake; there must be something political opponents should agree on and this is one of those.
“Our endorsement opens up an avenue for conversations and collaboration which had not been part of the Dominican political climate in recent decades,” he said, further adding, “Ours is a mature stance of brave defiance and solid support for what’s good about being Dominican; we call it as we see it and TUD will forever adopt a progressive approach to politics, both in and out of office.”
The party leader reiterates TUD’s readiness to collaborate with the presidential nominee in her capacity as President and hopes that their endorsement conveys their willingness to engage with the nation’s youth, fostering unity.
Finally, TUD expresses optimism that the upcoming presidential election on September 27 will proceed smoothly.
