Technical team from Venezuela to assist DOMLEC in addressing challenges

PM Skerrit addressing the press
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that a technical team from Venezuela will be on island from today to assist the Dominica Electricity Services ( DOMLEC) in addressing the challenges the company currently faces.

He made the announcement at a press conference held on Monday.

They will join another technical expert from St Lucia who arrived in Dominica on Sunday (September 17) to provide support to DOMLEC.

“I met with the President of Venezuela on Saturday in Cuba and I, on behalf of DOMLEC, requested [their] support. They are in touch with DOMLEC directly and it is in the intention of Venezuela to send a team of mechanical and technical engineers to Dominica tomorrow [Tuesday, September 19 ], to assist DOMLEC in looking at the challenges they are having with a view of providing whatever support we will need to address the immediate term and the medium term,” he said.

He continued, “We also discussed with the board and management of DOMLEC the issue of procurement of new generators for DOMLEC to address the situation in the medium term.”

Mr. Skerrit indicated that he will be meeting with the Board of DOMLEC to receive regular updates in order to ensure that the load-shedding situation can be addressed.

Furthermore, he stated that based on what DOMLEC is saying, the company has seen an increase in demand, “so it’s not only because of the heat but there is an increase because people are utilizing more energy.”

“There is a real increase in demand and with generators that are old then you will have issues,” he explained.

Mr. Skerrit gave assurance that his government would continue to provide all the necessary support to DOMLEC.

A technical team from Venezuela can only tell you that you need the geothermal plant like yesterday. Stop Int’l airport and do energy resilience. Life depends on it. We can all fly into Dominica today.
The IRC will not let you keep buying and putting big old generators on the people, including themselves.

How about the government give duty free exemption for imports of solar panels and power generation and storage equipment. They keep pushing this “climate resilience” narrative but you have to pay so much money to bring in anything into the country that most people wouldn’t even bother. If it wasn’t so expensive more people would set up their own power generation and ease the burden on Domlec.

It’s not going to get any better. More and more people going to get added to the grid. We are currently under populated imagine if the country’s population actually increased. More people using modern amenities (entertainment, air condition etc) more gadgets, more appliances. And then they even want to add electric vehicles to the mix. This is utter madness

The blue people want Dominicans to forget,5 years ago, after Maria Dominica was wiped off the face of the map.We had no water,no homes no food and no electricity.UWP said it would take Skerrit 20 years to bring Dominica back to where it was.Headed by Skerrit and the patriotic labour supporters,in less than 5 years Dominica was back on the world map.Electricity will be restored and restored better, despite the negative vibes from UWP.It is because of corruption, victimization, greed and lies,Dominicans lost confidence and kicked them out of office after 4 1/2 years. These people have nothing positive to say about Dominica. It is that level of stupidity why they are no longer in parliament.

What assistance are the Venezuelans going to give to the DOMLEC employees that the they cannot already handle? More persons to help is not going to solve the issue. That is just a waste of the country’s little resources wasted. The refusal to get new generators is what the problem is. Yes the generators are expensive but had they been bought on time it would definitely have cost less than now; so talking about increase in rates if they are purchased is rubbish. We are becoming like Cuba,Venezuela and Haiti where we will soon have only 12 hours of electricity per day. Everything that this government gets involved in goes down hill and getting worse by the second.

The generators have reached the end of their lifespan. They are old and decrepit. Paying to fly technicians in from Venezuela and compensating them for their labour is like throwing salt into the sea. What a witless government.

This is the real Kng pin of BS ! the guy admits publicly that since in the days of ROSS DOMLEC has been having short falls in generating production and capacity yet still they did absolutely nothing about it …
He took over control shares and ownership three years ago and made a huge political statement about the advantages of we now owning DOMLEC, he did not see it fit to do an audit of what he was taking over or if he did , they did nothing to fill the gap and or to have contingency plan in place knowing that there was growing demand by consumers for electricity..
he allowed the situation to reach crises stage and now comes around to play Lord and Saviour.. time pack up , for Dominica to grow Skerrit and his BS most go..period enough of this incompetence now ..

Are you thick headed? then again, you do whatever you want, and keep running the country to a ground. Domlec has very qualified individuals who would all tell you the same thing: they need more or bigger generators to produce more energy for the consumers. I mean, seriously, how dunce can you be not to see that? you don’t need a foreign engineering team to tell you that we need a generator that can produce at least 2 megawatts of energy. The local man on the road can tell you that easily. Not enough generating capacity = multiple load shedding and area power failures.

    1) wasn’t the entire grid rebuilt after Maria
    2) didn’t they anticipate that over time people would replace electrical items from the storm
    3) get the system running, then bring back the Icelandic crew and make the geothermal plant operational within 12 months.
    4) lower the tarrifs as geothermal energy is free
    5) enough of talking about talks.

Peter at the Pearly Gate told us that Dominica is a living HELL. If Dominicans choose to remain nonchalant during these times of unimaginary suffering, then they deserve this demonically, wicked serpent at the helm of government.

Roosevelt is nothing but bad news. In any other country, the streets would become rivers of humanity with fiery civil disturbance.

Dominica, under Roosevelt’s custody, has been infected with illnesses of deprivation, dispossession, deterioration and diminution. The cure lies with the collective power and determination of the people.

SMH. So we’re getting assistance with our electricity woes from a country that itself is struggling to keep its own lights on.

Talk about the blind leading the blind. Pun intended.

We are in this situation because of the tunnel vision of this administration. Focused only on an illusive and still unknown geothermal project. An aspiration that dates all the way back to the Dame.

Yes geothermal should be explored. But in the interim we should have developed more readily available forms of sustainable electric energy. And any government that thinks more peripherally, shoring up our fossil fuel electricity supply would also be prudent.

Surely the government that justifies upgrading an existing airport while building a new one, cant possibly consider that to be a waste of time and money.

we live in clown world. but all this is just political theatre. If the government really wanted to do something about the energy crisis they would give duty exemptions for solar panels and solar power equipment. Especially in light of the fact that they always talking about resiliency and climate and all that.

For the good of all, just perhaps, these Venezuelan technicians may bring some short term relief. However, I am highly skeptical.

The present generators should have been replaced at least a decade ago. They have passed the expiry date. What do we do with expired goods? Dispose of them of course.

The fact is that these generators have reached the end of their lifespan. Trying to fix them is like giving CPR to a cadaver. A new set of generators is the solution to the problem. The millions already spent on keeping Roosevelt and his privileged wife and children in the nineteen million dollar chateau could have been used to help procure some ultramodern generators.

hilarious. the moment in 2021 I heard that the government was purchasing controlling shares of Domlec I knew instantly we were in for trouble. like before, our governments are not equipped or able to competently operate it. some were praising skerrit for it and saying we doing big things with dlp blablabla. but I know better than to expect wisdom from fools. for years solar farms have been suggested to the government but they repeatedly shut it down saying it will compromise confidence in geothermal. anyway I thought Venezuela had its own problems. idk why he doesn’t just get solar panels from the Chinese or the french next door and set up a solar farm or 3 for various sections of the island. direct connection to the grid and at least some places will constantly have power.

Anything the Master of Deception touches turns to coal dust. The man is a curse on the country.

He run ROSS; completely destroy the banana industry and most of agriculture; allowed the public library to go to ruins; hasten the demise of many small and medium size local businesses; reduced the police service to a gang of thugs; destroyed all the once good paying jobs. The man is an economic terrorist.

“Our governments are not equipped or able to competently operate it.” What kind of foolish statement is this? The government does not “operate” DOMLEC or the power plant. Operations is managed by a team of managers and technical experts. Those who are in place today are the same ones who were in place operating the generators before Dominica bought DOMLEC.

They don’t need any technical team from anywhere. They need new generators with appropriate capacity. Venezuela has more load shedding problems than we do, for the same reason that we have that problem… corruption in government and the people’s money being wasted. Some of the money that they keep throwing at those shell hotels (eg Moroccan hotel at Portsmouth) that generate no interest should be spent to maintain Domlec’s impeccable service.
Everything that this government touches gets poisoned.
