The ICT Centre for Excellence, which was first alluded to in December 2014, is now in the testing phase.
On Wednesday, December 23rd, GIS News joined stakeholders and the Hon Minister for Technology and Telecommunication, Kelver Darroux at a demonstration at the facility.
The Government of India is Government’s partner in this venture which kicked off in March.
So far top quality hardware and software have been installed at the centre which is on the grounds of the Dominica State College.
A server and backup power supply are also part of the setup.
The highlight of Wednesday’s demonstration, however, was the newly-installed video conferencing unit.
The ICT Centre for Excellence is something which Government and specifically Minister Kelver Darroux have long anticipated.
Hon Darroux added that State College Students will be trained at this facility to make their best contributions to ICT in their workplace.
In addition to that, public officers will get the opportunity to enhance their skills all in an effort to incorporate the best of information communication in nation building.
Minister Darroux revealed that in the new year, the remaining furniture, other equipment and the relevant signs will be sourced.
In his August budget address, the Hon Finance Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, speaking about investments in small and medium-sized businesses referred to the centre.
He allocated an additional $500,000 to the project.
All of you complaining about the hardware, do you know what the actual specs are or are you just pretending to know? Because that photo won’t tell you the first thing about that.
This is a great initiative and hopefully the correct skills are taught that create innovation and employment.
However please do not only focus on technology. Soft skills must be a prioity too because it is the difference between mediocrity and delivering quality.
Take note India has an international reputation for struggling to deliver quality due to poor soft skills and cultural issues.
That doesn’t look like top quality hardware at all.
This ICT center of excellence looks so before 2000. Old dell PC’s and screens. This cannot be a center of excellence with dinosaur tools. This center of excellence should be at the cutting edge of technology. Mr. Keller Darroux you and your government missed the boat
ICT Centre for Excellence? All is see is carpel tunnel syndrome. The layout of the computers in the photo above is recipe for bad wrists. They set-up is not ergonomically friendly. Somebody who knows about these things should assist with the design of the centre.
